I hate to say it, but I've decided to not subscribe to FFXIV ARR after the free month is up.
I'm not one of the content locusts that have already capped a class in the first week of launch. I'm still in my 30's on my conj. Main because I tried to approach the game with the oldschool mentality of "wow, let's explore this vast new world and see what adventures and new friends we experience on the way" just as I did with FFXI.
It had me fooled for the first couple days of introduction and learning curve.
It's really just another 'grind up to cap asap and do 'epic battlez for uber lewt' game. There's nothing else to do but kill stuff. Lady bugs and Wasps. over and over and over at varying levels. FATEs as it turns out are the main focus in terms of leveling up. So, in practice, you RAID/ZERG to level up so you can RAID/ZERG the primal battles over and over.
That's not what I wanted. I wanted all the other features that make an MMO and MMORPG. Housing, Role playing, Pubs, inns, aesthetic items, fluff, trinkets, collectibles, easter eggs, hard to find/reach places in the world, exploration just for the sake of exploration.. not to get achievements or search for mobs on a hunting log. (which, i must say is at least more fun than FATES imo)
and let's not forget CLASS CUSTOMIZATION. This does not exist in FFXIV even in comparison to FFXI, which is pretty sad when comparing to other RPG's.
The armory system is cool but leaves much to be wanted in the likes of being 'unique'
And now they are adding Gear Scores to Final Fantasy XIV.... smh. I'm over it, then. Maybe I'll come see if there's more to do than just RAID stuff after the 2.1 patch or whatever.
Such a shame though. I was way too optimistic.
PS: I mostly made this thread to see if anyone else felt the same. (for those of you who wanna respond with "cool bye" and "can I have your stuff?" lol)
Anyone else disappointed in the WoW-ish approach to things? "end game" "new raid content" "gear score" "hard mode" "best in slot" .. "progression guild/FC" .... all this been-there-done-that shit but no talk of Community content, social tools, housing, crafting recipes for things OTHER than more crafting mats and gear to battle in i.e. tables, chairs, lamps, fountains, etc...
Anyone else feel like they were tricked into playing another Raiding-hack-n-slash, gogogo, fasterfasterfaster action game instead of an MMORPG?

I think you're going to be in the minority as it pertains to FF fanboy. I am a fanboy.
I have already registered the game for 6 month subscription.
I love the crafting.
I love the gathering.
I love the music.
I love the dungeon design and unlike other games, I don't mind doing them repeatedly.
I am waiting for Housing where I can make furniture or get furniture by beating content.
I am waiting for the PvP.
Golden Saucher sounds a lot of fun, ESPECIALLY if they can give us a deep and satisfying card game.
I can't wait for more specializations to be added to the classes I already have at 50.
Not really considering how unbelievably buggy their current PvE content is. Although the .3-1 second position lag for pretty much all PvE does add a "twitch" element to their slow paced combat.
hmm ok. well I don't share your pov on this one. Im excited about housing. The community on my server is pretty cool. Tons of emotes. Crafting is fantastic. Im not a fan of raid or die either but I always look forward to logging on because there are so many other things to do.
anyway, hope you find what you're looking for.
Nope, I don't agree at all. In fact, I am playing both WoW and FFXIV right now (just killed the new world boss Ordos on the timeless isle a few minutes ago... got nothin but gold...). I don't know what it is about FFXIV but for me it feels very fun and refreshing.
I'm kinda burned out on WoW even though I will raid in siege because of my guild, but FFXIV is nice because it gives me all the conveniences I'm used to in WoW, with all the beauty and majesty of Final Fantasy. Other WoW type games have not worked for me, like Rift, because I hated the game world of Rift and it felt so bland to me personally. I don't get that feeling in FFXIV, so I guess for now, I'm here to stay.
To each their own I say, but for me personally, I am pleased with FFXIV. I love the crafting, I feel the armory system is awesome, and the Final Fantasy feel really hits that nostalgic spot for me.
Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)
Well the OP is right. Its just another mmorpg with item tier endgame.
Thing is, that is why im playing it. Its not a fast track to endgame type game, yeah you can get to endgame fast but you sure as hell wont clear it fast...and even then that comes at the expense of missing a lot of good game design.
I didn't sign up for a new and revolutionary experience. I signed up for a really good game, with that storyline to endgame then tiered gear and dungeons experience without some boring attempt to re-invent the wheel.
What the game does, it does extremely well, with high production value, polish, and attention to detail.
For the longest time games like this have been shoddy, off the assembly line type games. They have all too often tried to make the trip to endgame fast track, a speed bump, with little to no attention into quality. They have all too often tried to re-invent something as if it was wrong to make a game like this.
Certainly this game will disappoint those looking for a fresh and new gaming experience. This game is focused on people who kind of miss the first generation themeparks. It does meet half way, not nearly as grindy or unfriendly as the older games, but still retains that old mmorpg feel before mmorpgs became nothing more than action games with little to no substance.
A big plus for me was that this game didn't pretend to be something it wasn't. It didn't overhype anyone.
I can understand why the OP is leaving if he doesn't like this type of game, nothing wrong with that. You either like a game like this or you don't really. Plenty don't which is why there is a rise in games attempting to unravel what (imo) makes a mmorpg a mmorpg.
Oh and fanboi use to mean some crazy dude who would tell people a bad and broken game isn't and that everything will be fixed next patch because a dev said so despite things are suppose to get fixed every patch and don't.
Now fanboi means you don't hate the game.
Kind of like how grind use to mean pointless mob farming for hours to get a few % XP because the game only had a few quest per level...and now means, roughly speaking, having to play the game to get something or advance.
The only thing that I don't like about this game is that their are no non instanced open world dungeons. Open world dungeons are one of the main things I like in mmos. I play a Scholar and would love to just log on and maybe grab a DD or 2 and venture into a dungeon not knowing what or WHO we will run into. The instanced dungeons in the game are fun but its not the same.
I keep saying that things that made mmos what they are should never ben taken out and open world dungeons are one of the things that give me some of my best memories of the mmos that I have enjoyed playing. I still remember xp groups in Lineage 2's Cruma Tower and Antharas Lair. Also remember xp groups in dungeons like Everquest 2's Black Borrow. Undecided on subbing but I will say that I am enjoying the game.
What is the difference between "Open World Dungeon" and "open world" other than being in cramp hallways and tunnels?
Sorry for the noob question, but when I think about it, it's the same thing other than the close quarters and scenery.
I was kinda thinking the exact same thing. They have laid a good foundation that's ready to be built into something great.
No, I don't feel I was tricked at all. Personally, I like the game. I do agree with one point in particular you made though and that is the lack of class customization. When you look at all the skills from other classes available to your job, it's pretty darn obvious which skills benefit your jobs role more than others, and once you've selected all those, you have no more additional skill slots available.
Personally I enjoy doing FATES. I'll admit they seem a bit lackluster to say, GW2s system for dynamic events, but the potential for growth is always there.
Gear Score, well, I'd rather deal with that than what the current issue is, people queuing up for content they are too undergeared for. Grind FATES to 50, then go into HM dungeons with lvl 40 crafted gear? Seriously ppl, what are you thinking there?
Not gonna rag on you for your opinion. Hope you check it out again later and see stuff worth coming back for.
The main difference is that its not just you and your party. Its the same as asking what the difference between a instanced mmo and an open world mmo. Would you play this game if everytime you stepped outside of town their was nobody in the world but just you and your party?
I think you misunderstood what I said.
What I meant was isn't Open world dungeons, with other people around beside your party, the same as regular open world, such as a forest, with other people around besides your party, and the only difference being the cramped quarters and scenery.
I cannot say a lot of what the OP is not true but there is more to the game than just what the OP claims.
First of all you need to realize this game has not spent the last 6-12 months adding a lot fo content,it was a restructure or fix job to improve what was poorly done the first time. This is only the launch phase so do not expect that added punch just yet,but there is truly a lot more coming.
If you really did play FFXI ,you would know how much Square adds. The truth is the developers efforts are used only by a small %.the majority play one dimensional game play ,speed leveling and end game raiding/gear grinding.
As to exploration, yes it could use that extra something, but this is actually sort fo brand new with Square adding in jumping, they don't like to spend a lot of time opening up endless exploration possibilities because that means a lot of stuck players and a lot of testing. How long does that type of content last,5 minutes, you enjoy the first new find ,than you don't care anymore,so i do not see that as being a big priority for any developer this early on.
The biggest point is that devs want players long term and the biggest selling point is that next carrot, that BETTER item or better gear piece.SO this continues to be the trend of developers,no i don't like it but expect it from ALL the developers.
One thing about Square is they are not very transparent or misleading, you know what you get.Square could lie to you and tell you how YOU mold the game and al lyour decisions matter and change the world. They could also tell you they listen to all of you ect ect.Truth is FFXIV is pretty much generic, you know what you are going to be doing, more will come,if yo ugive it more than one month lmao.
How long has the Eve online community given that game, geesh i went back to Eve 3x hoping to see something more in line with a playable game and still nothing but space and ships and that is 7+ years later,so i think it unfair to expect FFXI type content from a brand new game.Yes it was Square's fault they are still releasing a new game 10 months later but they already admit it and know it,so give them time.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Well I have mainly been a Lineage 2 player so I can only really speak for that game. Dungeons in Lineage 2 are huge and have an epic feeling. The dungeons actually give a sense of fear because the mobs look more darker and they do way more damage then open world mobs. Its was not cramped at all but I know what you are saying and I hate dungeons designed like that.
I don't feel "tricked." I do feel the game is a highly polished version of a very tired game.
I'm not sure I'll be subscribing either, though. The focus on raid progression bores me. I knew raids/dungeons were going to be a focus, but I hadn't played WoW in so long that I'd forgotten what that meant.
All in all, it's a great product that's probably just not my scene anymore. It's too bad. I really want to like it, but it just doesn't offer me anything all that new or interesting.
Yep...this ^
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
In my opinion, the success of the game will depend on what road SE goes down:
If it becomes a raid-centric game it wont do that well. It wont fall as far as Rift did, but it wont be much over 250k subs. (Not the rift was necessarily raid-centric, but it definitely settled into the item level tiered end game)
If it pays a *lot* of attention to its great crafting systems, adds new classes, adds non gear based progression (or makes long term gear goals to work towards, like a HQ AF set that will take an epic commitment (and no raiding) to get), and makes raiding feel like a secondary focus it will be a long term success
Dipslaying an ilevel is a big red flag. there definitely needs to be a check in the duty finder because the stuff is not balanced for level 40 junk gear that some queue with, but there should be a more creative way to do this
No players have been tricked those that think they may have been did not read up on what they were buying befor hand. Yoshi clearly stated that ARR would be highly WoW inspired with most features copied from it as he believes its a great game.
Also try to remember after they decided to scrap 1.0 and begin on ARR they only had so much time as to get a decent game out before FF was forgotten. If it feels a little in areas thats why the game your playing now was developed in 1 year not 4 or 5 like most mmo's, as others have said its a solid foundation for them to build on.
I am still enjoying and did not feel "tricked". I agree that the FATEs are a nuisance (among my other complaints), but it doesn't affect my perception towards the game. I used to be one of those who rushed through content with the intent of playing raids and pvp with my friends. This time around, I choose to slow things down. The thing is - this game allows me to enjoy that.
The crafting, the multiple classes, the multiple grand companies - they were all designed for players to enjoy and revisit the early content. To top that off, the detail they placed in the world and its lore makes their world feel more alive. It actually feels more like a world to hang out in. Granted, it will all end as I expect it to. At the very least, I am enjoying the journey.
I'm actually playing FFXIV specifically for the end game raiding and progression. I haven't played WoW since Wrath of the Lich King, and I don't have any inclination to go back...except I do miss raiding quite frequently. I've been very happily playing GW2 as my main MMO for the last year, and that will continue to be my main MMO going forward as I just think it's one of the most fun online games I've ever played from moment-by-moment gameplay standpoint. What I think GW2 lacks, however, is that progression drive and a coordinated group PvE end game. Incidentally, that's precisely what I feel FFXIV excels at; so I'm hoping it can provide that fix for me in the long run.
I'll certainly concede that it completely lacks gameplay fun - you know, that stuff that GW2 does so well. I've wanted to rip my hair several times already with how boring quest grinding, or FATE grinding, or spiritbond grinding, or just straight up mob grinding has been. (How did they manage to take a concept as amazing as dynamic events and turn them into something as horrible and grindy and lifeless as FATEs, anyway? I get pains when I think about it. I absolutely adore DEs and think they're the next evolution beyond quests, just as quests were once an evolution beyond context-less mob grinding; and I absolutely detest FATEs. Ugh.) Dungeons themselves have been cool enough mechanic-wise, but I've found myself insanely bored by the combat itself.
I like the world, the lore, the story, and the distinct Final Fantasy feel the game has in abundance, however. From that perspective, it definitely does not feel like WoW. So I'm happy to be in the world, and I'm currently driven to keep on progressing - I especially can't wait to continue leveling all the crafts; they're so well done. As long as the raiding is compelling and fun in that unique way that only raiding can be, that might be enough to keep me playing on the side of GW2. It's really up in the air right now though.
The game brings enough new to the table from Final fantasy ties, and it does everything right from a themepark perspective.
I'm a PvP player, and still playing this game and loving it. That says something lol.
