Either buy it, or don't. It's $30. If that's enough cash that it hurts to spend it over a month for entertainment, then wait until it isn't. Otherwise, think of it this way; that's 2 tickets to the movies, you will probably play this game more than 2 hours, even if you never subscribe or play it again after the free period.
If you like PvP, then buy the game AFTER PvP is released. Don't buy it today just because they SAY they'll come out with PvP in 2.1. You have no idea if they actually will come out with it because it could be delayed, scrapped, or cancelled due to development hiccups, design problems, or whatever else. And even if it DOES come out, you don't know for sure if it'll actually be GOOD. Designing PvP in an MMO that's based around PvE is difficult and sometimes a luck-based mission even for a skilled game designer, so you have no guarantee if any PvP this game creates in a future that doesn't exist in the present will be fun or not, or if it'll even have players due to the culture of the player base. What if everyone is into PvE and doesn't like PvP and they make PvP 100% optional? You'll end up sitting in waiting rooms twiddling your thumbs. That's just one of many POSSIBLE examples, and until PvP is actually released (or at least being tested on a public test server), you own't know what the truth will be.
Staying Power is a matter of opinion. Let's be fair, if your soul purpose is to get max level and grind away HM dungeons and raids; then yes, you'll quit within a month.
If you want to experience the stories, all the classes (including tradeskills) while waiting for:
Housing
PvP
More Dungeons
Chocobo Raising
Then the game has quite a bit of staying power.
No game is capable of keeping everyone engrossed during the first month of release. It takes constant updates and tweaking. Even WoW had the problem.

If you like 'traditional', tab based, slow paced combat, a Hub based quest system, like the idea of ONE character being able to be every class, like to group, like fishing, like crafting, then this game is probably for you.
If you like 'twitch' style combat, like to max out ONE class, not into dungeon play, and are not terribly social, then I would say this game is probably NOT for you.
Just don't buy into the Fate zergs and you'll do fine. Do them at your own pace. Everyone has this annoying urge to rush to 50.
Its called human nature for finding the best and most efficient ways of completing tasks with smallest risk.
FATE grinding delivers on all fronts - fastest XP, zero risk, all classes welcome, no need too wait for hours.
Dungeons runs - long waits, takes 30min to complete, crappy loot, way too much pointless trash with too much HP for what purpose? Oh and to add insult to injury - crappy XP.
If dungeons were not part of the storyline - I'd say almost nobody would run them, they are that boring IMO.
If you don't do fates you are simply screwing yourself out of much better way of progressing.
That is assuming that your goal is to race to level cap/end game as quickly as possible, skipping/ignoring most of what the game has to offer. If that's what floats your boat, fine, nothing wrong with that. Good luck with your next game.

I really like the game, but I actually agree with this. I would never buy a game based on something that is only promised in the future. Even though I'll be looking forward to new content, I wouldn't pay for a sub if I wasn't having fun right NOW.
FF14 is basicly WoW Cross with Runescape is my best comparison i can come up with, game has alot of polish but no PvP as of yet it being added next patch or somthing and it sounds like small scale area/battleground PvP aswell as a 3 way seigy type PvP at glance. i myself is waiting to see what the PvP is like i heard it should be in next patch or somthing but havant acualy looked into it msyelf.

I agree.
And not everyone is interested in leveling multiple jobs. A lot of players like to focus on one and if you are doing that it takes roughly 2 weeks to hit 50. That is not rushing but making use of ample xp that FATES provide to players. It would be foolish to not do FATES unless people artificially want to slow down their progression in order to force some longevity in game play.
Have you really played this game or do you just talk like you did?
You can only do fates for a few levels at a time. Then you have to break off and do Class quests, job quests and story quests which require a dungeon every few levels. You talk as though they are optional. They aren't. These unlock your progression and open things to do at end game. The quests unlock important skills and abilities. As far as boring? Well, I suppose that is a subjective term, but I can't imagine how dungeons in WoW or Rift aren't boring where players so far out gear them players can literally faceroll them. In any event, these are not optional, they unlock future content. If you don't do them, you have not leveled in the most efficient manor. Since upon reaching 50, you have to go back and do all that low level content now.

You got to 50 via a method that was put in the game to level alts. It would assume you've unlocked everything. You've unlocked nothing. No wonder you have nothing to do, you skipped it all. Now you need to go back and do it.

No that is exactly what you are trying to do. Telling me to how to play the game. That is what you meant by 'you haven't leveled in most efficient manner'. How do you decide that anyways? people who do fate grinding that is all they do 'fate grinding'. I was in group earlier where lvl 40 players were still in lvl 20 gear..why? because it doesn't matter in the zerg. The more mobs you tag more xp you get..simple.
But i didn't tell anyone that 'hey you all are doing it wrong, this isn't the most efficient way to level.' Their money, their time and they can utilise whatever way they desire. Why the hell do i even care unless it is somehow effecting my gameplay? which it clearly isn't.
Your analogy for gas falls apart because without gas the car won't even run but in this case whether you chose to continue with main story or not, decide to skip the class story and few skills you get would hardly matter when you are running fate with zergs.
Most of these people hit 50 and then go back and get everything done in one go. people care too much about how others are playing their game instead of focusing on their own..that is the problem here.
It is like deja vu from GW2 forums 'you are all doing it wrong'. Yeah heard that million times already.
I really can't decide if I want to pick up this game and give it a go. The graphics look great and the animations look well done. Classic tab action doesnt bother me either.
That being said it doesnt seem to be a finished product. I enjoy PvE as much as the next guy, but I also like lots of PvP. What kind of PvP is this game slated to have. Battlegrounds? Arenas? How will it be scaled? Will classes be balanced enough( this may be difficult to tell as of right now). Does the game justify a box price and a monthly fee on top of that for what there is to do now?
I'm no one of those hardcore guys that rushes through content. I like to take my time and explore. Is there enough content to last me until the next update if I work at an average/slightly below average pace?
Any information on these questions would be great!
The game is the most polished MMO i have seen release ever.
That's because it failed so hard the first time they spent 2 years polishing it.
As for the OP, this game is essentially a WoW clone, and there's no PvP. Don't bother.
My only real complaint so far is that managing gear / items when leveling multiple classes can be a pain, even after you can hire retainers.
That and the occasional (short) server queues. Gil seller spam is still an issue but is showing visible signs of diminishing greatly.
To those who say skip the class / story / dungeon quests, you are doing nothing but providing a HUGE disservice to would-be players of the game. By skipping that content people miss out on jobs, good dungeon loot, good quest loot, a well-written story, Grand Company membership (and all benefits thereof), chocobo mounts & battle pets, retainers (storage and AH access), materia melding, inn rooms, levequests... the list goes on.
Unless you've already seen / done it all, skipping content in this game is a bad move, period.
No that is exactly what you are trying to do. Telling me to how to play the game. That is what you meant by 'you haven't leveled in most efficient manner'. No, the GW2 "you are doing it wrong" issue was about playing the game subjectively. But I wasn't telling you "you are doing it wrong" I was saying you just didn't do it period. You haven't completed anything, It's just a fact. It's not subjective.
If the content were optional, you'd have a very valid point. In GW2, If I had used crafting to get to 80 instead of DEs you wouldn't try to tell me I did it wrong. Unless I started bitching about World Map completion and how much I still had. You know I'd hear "You crafted your way to 80 and now are bitching that you have to go and explore the map?"

You are gimping people if they take your advice. Sure you can grind fates to 50 really fast. But you will not have access to jobs that way. You won't have airship access, or a grand company, or a mount, or the ability to have your mount fight alongside you. Not to mention several key abilities are locked behind class quest chains. Telling people they can just grind fates will end up with a half ass character with limited abilotes, travel, storage, gear options and more.
Back to the OP - I was on the fence, and this morning, I pretty much said "Eff it" (I really said "eff it" - I'm just plain crazy that way) and bought the game. I have a bunch of buddies playing, and even if it turns out I only get a couple of months of enjoyment, that's cool. With a little voucher code, I got the game for 25% off, the first month is free, and the sub is maybe $14. $36 for 2 months of playing something interesting works for me.
IF you like crafting in MMOs, FFXIV's is top notch imo. One of the more rewarding crafting systems I have ever played with. It does take some effort to level the different Crafting Classes though.
Originally posted by Slappy1 My honest opinion is that it is a good game, but not worth a monthly sub.I feel there are games as good if not better that are ftp.Rift comes to mind.
One would think that whether a game is worth a continued subscription fee depends mostly on the content that comes post-release, you know, the content that comes after you put in money beyond the box price to play the game.
I can't really think of a ftp MMO that shines in the post-release content update department. There's a ton of updates planned for ARR for the next year, financed by the sub fee. If you don't trust SE to deliver (like they have proven to deliver with ARR) then don't sub, just wait and see.
All in all, this kind of thinking makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
To the OP, there's really nothing wrong with the game. There are flaws, every game has them, you can't escape them, and if you can't deal with them, don't buy the game. Really, if it is this difficult to make the decision then that tells me a lot at least. It doesn't even cost the full price of a normal game.
Have you seen or played the 2.4 update to Rift? It's equal or above ptp games updates. Not only that,an expansion is also coming.
Some day I'm going to put a sword through your eye and out the back of your skull!

I'm having fun with the multi classing system.

It is like deja vu from GW2 forums 'you are all doing it wrong'. Yeah heard that million times already.
Have you seen or played the 2.4 update to Rift? It's equal or above ptp games updates. Not only that,an expansion is also coming.
Some day I'm going to put a sword through your eye and out the back of your skull!
