I think you should try the game. It's incredibly solid and fun to play at the moment. However, I understand that you're hoping for PvP. Well, there's good news. PvP is planned to release shortly.
Here's what has been officially confirmed: "As it stands now, there will be two types of PvP areas. The first is the Coliseum, a structure built by all three Grand Companies to serve as a training ground for their soldiers. Players will join teams and be matched against similarly skilled teams in a classic arena format. The other option is zones designated as free PvP areas, warzones that carry increased risk for players and will make that clear when you're entering them."
So, there will be open world PvP and team Arenas. Hopefully that's what you're looking for.
I heard somewhere a long time ago that they plan on making world pvp with flagging, it puts you up against the other Grand Companies. But that was like a year ago. I'm not a big fan of PvP anyways, so I never followed it for PvP.
If you like a good, very indepth crafting system, then you'll love FFXIV. Best crafting I've seen in an MMO since I started playing waaay back in 1991 :P
No that is exactly what you are trying to do. Telling me to how to play the game. That is what you meant by 'you haven't leveled in most efficient manner'. How do you decide that anyways? people who do fate grinding that is all they do 'fate grinding'. I was in group earlier where lvl 40 players were still in lvl 20 gear..why? because it doesn't matter in the zerg. The more mobs you tag more xp you get..simple.
But i didn't tell anyone that 'hey you all are doing it wrong, this isn't the most efficient way to level.' Their money, their time and they can utilise whatever way they desire. Why the hell do i even care unless it is somehow effecting my gameplay? which it clearly isn't.
Your analogy for gas falls apart because without gas the car won't even run but in this case whether you chose to continue with main story or not, decide to skip the class story and few skills you get would hardly matter when you are running fate with zergs.
Most of these people hit 50 and then go back and get everything done in one go. people care too much about how others are playing their game instead of focusing on their own..that is the problem here.
It is like deja vu from GW2 forums 'you are all doing it wrong'. Yeah heard that million times already.
No, the GW2 "you are doing it wrong" issue was about playing the game subjectively. But I wasn't telling you "you are doing it wrong" I was saying you just didn't do it period. You haven't completed anything, It's just a fact. It's not subjective.
If the content were optional, you'd have a very valid point. In GW2, If I had used crafting to get to 80 instead of DEs you wouldn't try to tell me I did it wrong. Unless I started bitching about World Map completion and how much I still had. You know I'd hear "You crafted your way to 80 and now are bitching that you have to go and explore the map?"
If it wasn't optional then your progress would be halted if you don't follow storyline or class quests and you wouldn't be allowed to hit 50. Since there are no such roadblocks so nope it is very much optional and players level in most efficient way..yes the way that is efficient to them, not to you or me. If people want to get done with leveling grind first and then follow on storyline and class quests who am i or you to tell them you are doing it wrong?
Your opinion regarding what is the most efficient way to level to 50 is not a fact...it is just that..an opinion.

Your opinion regarding what is the most efficient way to level to 50 is not a fact...it is just that..an opinion.
Your progress is halted. You have barred yourself from any real endgame content. You seem to think 50 is some magical number. It's just a single check point. So while it is the most efficient way to 50, it's not the most efficient way to progress. You can call it what you will. You are telling this OP things that will hurt his game play. Go ahead get to 50 through FATES and then discover there was a ton of shit that needed to get done at earlier levels in order to continue to progress.
If you want to blast your way to 50 and go back later and finish the story, you have truly lost a lot of progress that is irrecoverable. especially in the area of your Grand Company and it's ranks. Do you know what seals are? They are your Tokens. It's a form if in game currency you get with your faction. You can buy all kinds of things and if you don't rank up with your GC as you go, you can't earn seals. or you can't increase your seal cap. So all those fates and untold thousands of seals you have totally wasted....thrown away. Is ridiculous. How is that more efficient? That's a huge waste.
The longer this discussion continues, the clearer it becomes that you really have no clue as to how this game plays.

How has anyone halted themselves when they know they can go back and do it all? you make it sound as if it is one time thing. barred themselves from end game content? what the hell? More like delayed.
By the way i am not telling OP anything, i am telling him what goes on in the game and the very first post that was quoted was about leveling your second or third class. But truth is that a lot of people are doing it for their first class too moment they get their chocobo...on to grinding fates til 50.
Now you can continue to be stubborn and keep telling what is the 'most efficient' way to level or progress but it varies from person to person.
Yes i know what GC is and what ranks are.
Do you know that people who grind fates have more seals than they can handle? all they got to do is take small break..upgrade their rank, get what ever armor or weapons they need, go back to fate grinding rinse and repeat. At lvl 44 you get the quest to upgrade you to the top most rank. other than that it is simply the matter of handing in seals and upgrading ranks. yeah shocking people actually do take breaks from FATES to upgrade ranks. You will hear this a lot of times while grinding fates 'my seals are maxed brb'. Players are not that stupid, they know what they are doing.
So what is so irrecoverable here? I have played this game a lot and that is how i was able to write a leveling guide (in my signature).
This is second time you have accused me of being clueless about the game when sad part is it is you who do not understand how and why people level the way they do and you are hell bent on telling everyone that unless they play they way you do..they are playing it wrong.
Edit; Also i would like to mention here that even if players are not following storyline and do not become members of grand companies at lvl 30 they won't be missing something very important and yes it is very much recoverable later on. I have leveled two classes to 50 now and i upgraded my rank just for the sake of it. I have bought nothing from GC except for a minion. The armor and weapons are nothing special and since people who grind fates only grind fates i don't see how they are going to miss anything big if they don't buy stuff from grand companies. Hell i have seen people in coerthas grinding lvl 40 fates in lvl 20 armor.
Only because you keep using big alarming words like 'barred' and 'irrecoverable' doesn't mean it is true.
I think somewhere we got off track, I went back and reread the arguments. And You did mention circling back through content. I missed that statement earlier. And I'll admit that you can do it that way. It will work, going back and hitting the story after reaching 50. And at this point it becomes a matter of choice on how you want to play. But you did say that and I missed that part. That said, my opinion is that it's not the best course since when reaching 50, you are going to want to go back and level the job class instead of going back through low level content. Again, this becomes a matter of opinion and not one of right or wrong ways of doing it. Sorry for misunderstanding and GL.
Have you seen or played the 2.4 update to Rift? It's equal or above ptp games updates. Not only that,an expansion is also coming.
So how often do you get updates like that in Rift? Every 3 months should be a given, if that is the case then good for them.
Not only just Rift. GW2 and TSW both release regular content updates. Yes they use B2P model but still there is no 15 bucks a month commitment.
Cryptic planned to release regular updates with Neverwinter every two or three months. They just released the first module. Trion plans to release new episodes for Defiance every couple of months and recently released first episode.
Only P2P MMOS release regular and quality content updates is nothing more than a myth created by those who are biased towards B2P / F2P models.

Game is only worth playing if you want to be tank or healer .
1. FATES are really unskilled zergs so avoid those unless you want to level up fast and miss the entire game
2. Dungeons are fun but DPS cant get in because only myself and a few others are tanks or healers.
3. Servers are down more than up it seems .
4. Story is fun if you like being alone solo
5. You have to do story to unlock dungeons
6. Most players are bad mostly the PS3 players so expect to wipe a lot in dungeons later on.

i think most of you went over the topic of the op , when you're talking about how to level .
btw , OP , what you decide to do , buy the game and try the free month or just wait and see what is ahead ?
