EQ2 Winback event - all accounts gold until Oct 15

NadiaNadia Member UncommonPosts: 11,798

my inactive EQ2 accounts currently show "gold" status until 10/15

the downside of this promotion is some players may think they have free characters slots

(extra slots only exist with a sub acct or being an old eq2 acct or paying for slots)

the Heroic character promotion does not give a free character slot

When SoE will learn how to make a decent F2P revenue model, then I might think about coming back.

It is clear that SoE doesn't want me to play its games as I am forced to pay to have access to essencial content.

Meanwhile I will keep playing Rift............... I have access to all the content and I just pay for the extras.

Trion knows how to make a F2P game, SoE doesn't.................. and what is amazing is that Smedley has still a job even though since EQ1 didn't get a single thing right.

    I agree

Trion gives you all adventure content

    http://forums.riftgame.com/general-discussions/newcomers/366194-rift-f2p-buying-storm-legion-3.html#post4450828

remains to be seen if Trion will charge you future adventure content

    for EQ2

you have access to all adventure content except the last 2 expansions

when did Storm Legion go free?

for EQ2 you have access to all adventure content except the last 2 expansions

Storm Legion is free and I have access to all content and loot, you only have to spend 5$ to have full access to the AH.

That's it.............. No trials, no tricks, no traps (as stated on Rift website)

In order to play EQ2 on the same level of Rift, you need to buy the last 2 expansions at full price ( $ 29.99 each) as if they just released even though they are almost a year old.

You also have to Subscribe ($ 12 a month) for:

    1) Wearing Legendary and Epic gear

    2) Using Master Spells.

Both are basic requirements to play Dungeons and Raids (or you won't get an invite, or worse you'll be kicked out)

That's classic SoE............... Trials, tricks and traps.

The funny thing is, that I actually subscribed to EQ2, so I was willing to spend money to play, but then I discovered that Subscribers had to buy the expansion and I promptly canceled my subscription.

For a F2P game EQ2 is a bloody expensive game............no wonder no one is playing it.

not true - preordering TOV (one expansion)  gives you access to all adventure content  (COE is included)

    effective 10/1

EQ2 no longer has gear restrictions

    DOV is free

master spells are unknown because SOE has not updated the matrix

Incorrect about the "last 2 expansions", Everquest 2, whenever a new expansion comes out, you get all previous expansions.

And all gear restrictions have been removed. As for the masters, not too sure, but they should remove those restrictions as well. But if you can make money in the game, you can buy Kronos which you can use to pay for game time.

    Killing dragons is my shit

    Why is my post incorrect?

You had to buy the 2 expansion as per 3 months ago (when I was subscribed to EQ2).

Now I learn there is another expansion coming out...........you still have to buy an expansion, it is just a different one, like previously you had to buy Chains of Eternity and Age of Discovery.

So there will always be an expansion to buy if you want to play all content in EQ2 (it doesn't matter that now there is just one instead of 2.................it is still a con (because it is advertised as F2P)

The gear and Spell restrictions were active 3 months ago and apparently the Spell restriction is still ongoing, and it is still a major restriction, which requires you to have a subscription.

Sorry, but its taking ages to make simple changes, with SoE you always have to read the small print, and that's not very customer friendly.

Rift don't ask you to pay for the expansion, and you have access to 100% content.............not IF or BUTS

No point defending SoE business model, customers are voting with their wallets and they are not choosing SoE games.

you're giving praise to a mmo that has only 1 expansion and unknown business model for future expansions

i don't recall Trion announcing that all future adventure content is free

I expect Trion to charge for future expansions

EVE is one of the few mmos that doesnt charge for expansions

if Trion follows EVE lead -- great but i doubt it

I have zero problem with endgame content requiring a subscription.  thats the way it should be. but EQ2's doesnt remotely require you to have a subscription.

For one, there is very little content in EQ2 (if any) where a master spell would be needed over the tradeskilled one.  At most you would need to replace a dozen spells, which would cost you a couple bucks.  Oh, greedy SoE.  i need to pay 3 bucks to enjoy your end game!

I get Rift's model is better from a freeloader standpoint.  However its long term viability is still unknown, and what they will charge for in the future is also unknown.  At least as an EQ2 subscriber Im not presented with an obnoxious, immersion killing window every time I hit a vendor reminding me that Trion wants even more of my money.

I think they said the plan isnt to charge for expansions, but charge for features such as new souls.

  • NadiaNadia Member UncommonPosts: 11,798

I agree that not charging for adventure content is a much better method for ftp

many of the ftp mmos I've tried charge for expansions

    DDO, LOTRO, AOC, EQ, EQ2

they are not true ftp, they are a hybrid

    commonly known as freemium

Thanks for mentioning EVE, it helps make my point even more valid.

EVE is not F2P and it doesn't charge for the expansion

EQ2 is F2P and it charges for the expansion (and requires a subscription to play the end game)

You don't see what's wrong with it? (Really?)

I am not praising Rift (which is as average as EQ2) but its business model, and I base my judjment on simple facts which are:

    1) SoE always charged for its expansions since it went F2P.......... and it will keep doing so with its next expansion (confirmed)

    2) Rift dropped the expansion from its shop months ago and recently released a free Update which equal half EQ2 expansion, so it doesn't look like it's going to charge for future content.

Regardless of Trion intention to charge for future expansions or not, fact is that the business model is still more honest and CLEAR than SoE

Playing EQ2 you always discover a new restriction as you play, which you weren't aware of.

In the end you are forced to subscribe or quit, to avoid being annoyed by all those locked pieces of essential content.

With Rift everything is crystal clear................... I challenge you to find any essential part of content you have to pay for (except for the full AH access) which is not available for free (that's how F2P should be)

If SoE wasn't so greedy and knew how to "extract" money from their customer without alienating them, I would rather play EQ2 than Rift........................ just saying.

    Raids..........

That's end game in EQ2 and Rift and WoW.........etc etc.

I love Raiding and with no access to Masters you won't be welcome in a half decnt Raid.

I am going to say this again.....I am not a Freeloader (I have a budget of $50 a months for MMORPGs).

So I could easily spend $15 to play EQ2 but not if I have to buy the Expansion as well (and the cash shop too).

Basically is either the expansion or the subscription, I am not going to pay for both for a game that advertise itself as a F2P.

SoE needs to make up its mind.............they can't have it all,...........not anymore.

If EQNext will have the same business model, I count myself out already, regardeless how good the game is.

This could well be the best f2p game on the market if SOE would stop being so cheap. So many people would come back to this game if it was f2p.
  • RedempRedemp Member UncommonPosts: 1,136

I really don't understand people, why such outrage for having to buy exspansions? I generally think SoE has a good F2P model .... the content they let you play for free could easily last a years game time. If you want to get an idea of a bad f2p model, take a gander at Swtor.

/shrug - I've never understood gamers who can't make their budget work around their hobby.

    Yep, that's exactly my point.

I've been saying that Mr Smedley is inadapt to lead a juggernaut like SoE.

He doesn't have a clue how to make money out of SoE half decent games.................which is a shame because I could play SoE games for the right price

I was paying £ 20 a month for the SoE All Access Pass for 5 years, then they started charging even for the air I was breathing while their games gradually went shallower and shallower, so I canceled my subscription for good.

Now they see 0 of my money, I spend my money somewhere else.

As I said in a previous post I have a monthly budget of $50 to spend in MMORPGs.

I could spend all of it for an EQ remake with no Cash Shop..............but I won't spend money on a shallow game that has Subscription+Expansion+Cash Shop.

AAA quality western freemium games (non SoE)

    LOTRO

    SWTOR

    DDO

    AoC

    Rift

If you put EQ2 in there its pretty easily second best model as it currently stands.  Instead of comparing it to just Rift, compare it to all of its peers.

They short on money, they laid off staff and now want to try and get some cash in to keep their new game in development.

You are well out of topic, read what's the topic is about (the Business model)

I played EQ for 3 years and EQ2 for 4 years, so I am a 7 years loyal SoE customer.

We are not discussing the quality of the games (EQ is still my favorite all time MMO)

Last time I played EQ2 I had to subscribe to use the AH, wear Epic gear and use Master spells, and I was asked to pay $30 extra to play end game Raids..............no thanks

That you are a freeloader with unreasonable expectations.

Most games charge for expansions.  get over it, or stick with Rift.  From the company that sold people one year subscriptions when they knew they were going f2p long before that year was up.
