    yes SOE had recent layoffs

but SOE loosened EQ2 restrictions on ftp this week  earning them *less* cash

    - free expansion DOV

    - no more buying gear unlocks

what SOE added this week were 2 new features

    - buying 280 AA

    - buying an instant 85

    Nope

I pay for what's the game is worth, I never played Rift because I didn't think it was good enough for my money, as F2P is perfect though.

I would pay more to play EQ2, but not Subscription+Expansion............ not anymore, because the game is not as good as it was 5  years ago (before Rift creator turned EQ2 in WoW 2.0)

It's not me that has high expectation but SoE that needs to review its expectctations for a game which is now average at best , SoE cannot ask players to pay the full price to play an average game.

Also you are missing my main point.

F2P games needs Freeloaders to attract paying customers..............paying customers won't play a game with no players

And SoE can't attract Freeloaders, therefore no paying customers either..........see my point now?

That's why EQ2 servers are empty.

    i dont think so

w some exceptions, Darklight Wood newbie zone had a revamp for appearance in the last year

otherwise, its like most mmos, the newer content usually benefits from better graphics

w the current promotion, i saw 6 instances of Greater Divide two days ago on Freeport server

i know that doesnt speak for staying population but this promotion does have players checking it out

That's the way to go.......... give players the chance to buy "shortcuts"..............not content

Some people have little time but lots of money...............they will pay to catch up with people who have more spare time.

Now they need to drop  ALL the gameplay restrictions and give free expansion, and maybe we are onto something............

    Otherwise enjoy the empty servers.

You are absolutely delusional if you think making the expansions free will being in enough paying customers to offset the loss in revenue.

Besides, I don't think its SoE's call anyway.  Pretty sure they are forced by Sony to put out an expansion per year in both EQ1 and EQ2.

Alos, difference between empty servers and top heavy servers.  most of the servers are the latter, not the former (though they arent booming either)

I could spend all of it for an EQ remake with no Cash Shop..............but I won't spend money on a shallow game that has Subscription+Expansion+Cash Shop.

so instead youll spend money on a game that is significantly more shallow and instead is Subscription + expansion features (souls) + cash shop

I've been playing Rift for 2 months, I have 2 level 60 (max level) and I Raid twice a week................... and so far I spent $5 (to unlock the AH)

Last time a played EQ2 I had to subscribe to use the AH, wear Epic gear and use Master spells, and I was asked to pay $30 extra to play end game Raids..............no thanks

    So your point is?

That you are a freeloader with unreasonable expectations.

Freeloader really they offer a f2p model thats crap and you know it. Adept skills only will get you no where in this game and you know it. I could care less about having to pay for xpacks. They make money from cash shop and xpacks and players that sub. Let f2p players play without restrictions and they probably would make alot more money from cash shop and gain subs. Or better yet don't bother to offer a free to play model if your going to be cheap with it. A lvl 90 player with adept skills only is a joke.

Why should f2pers be able to do endgame content without subbing?  If you like the game enough, support it.

Which they can anyway.  expert spells are fine for any group content and the majority of raid content.

And if you want to unlock all the important masters you are looking at what, 5 bucks?

Its so ironic that people like you call SoE cheap and greedy.  look in the mirror sometime.  5 bucks.

As someone who has subbed to EQ2 since launch, and is still currently subbing. The guy is absolutely right.

EQ2s F2P model is just not competitive. The community has been stagnant and slightly decreasing for a long time now.  The active players I see online are the same ones I have grouped and raided with for the past 4 years. There really has been no new blood since RoK.

EQ2 has a relatively stable population. The hard core players arent going anywhere, but theres going to be no new blood unless restrictions are lifted and leveling content is revamped (or more promotions like this which skip low level content).

EQ and EQ2 are the last bastion of SoEs bad F2P models.   All the other games have been converted or have started as relatively good models.  This probably has something to do with the fact that they are their flagship games, and making gold membership unnecessary would be a big gamble on their revenue.

I can see both sides, I just hope whatever they pick ensures the continued development of this great game.

a clarifier - Freeport in Sept 2011 launched as a new server, well after ROK (2007/2008)

Freeport does have many players who switched servers but that included new blood too

I admit i left EQ2 after ROK but I came back when EQ2 went ftp w Freeport launch

I am a sub most the time on Freeport

Freeport rivals Antonia Bayle for being EQ2s most popular server

but AB has many more guilds doing endgame content

Why is it that sub.players think being a f2p player means your a freeloader? I just think the sub.model is old and done. Add a cash shop and get players that like the game, they will spend more money than a 15 a month sub. player. I know i would. I love the items SOE has in its shop. And one month i may spend 20 bucks and the next maybe 50 bucks. Not all f2p players are freeloaders and i sure the hell ain't one. I would rather support the game by spending money on things my character can use than just pay a flat 15 dollars. When i played the game before f2p i spent money in the shop even with the sub because i liked what they have. I have two characters with 3 mounts each and all kinds of things for my house and cosmetic items. Non of which i could have gotten with just a sub.

I was one of the "new blood" who joined when the FP server opened up, and played for 3 or 4 months as I recall.

I have fond memories but I do recall that even though I was a subscriber, they still charged extra for certain races like Dark Elves, sort of annoyed me but not the reason I quit.

I'd probably give it another go, but am otherwise engaged atm.

when EQ2 Freeport server went ftp, all expansions up to TSO were unlocked

subs had access to all races except the new vampire Freeblood race introduced in Dec 2010

Freeblood was free if you preordered DOV but otherwise the new race was a cash shop item

I just recently quit FFARR (soooo lame) and tried WOW (still cant get into it).......then when I saw the free lvl 85, I thought I would go back and try EQ2 again (played it long ago). Much to my surprise it had everything I want in an MMO, and found myself really enjoying the game again.
