I beg to differ. They just took their bad design and took it off the rails. Big deal. SWG had a better design 10 years ago which is a lifetime in this industry. Stop trying to make this something it is not. EA is not going to commit the money to fix this, hence you just get mediocre changes that impress few.
This will not bring people back to the game.
So, taking a space mini-game rail-shooter and turning it into a free form PvP dogfight isn't a complete redesign of the space missions? Some people are very hard to please, I guess.
My issue isn't with the re-design. In fact, I like what they did with the space system. I would have preferred free-form exploration, but we knew that wasn't going to happen. But this is a very nice change. My beef with it is that this is the ENTIRE expansion. No new planets. No continuation of the class stories. Just the space re-design. As nice as that is, I can't understand how they can consider this an actual expansion.
SWTOR was released nearly two full years ago. Pre-release, I remember Daniel Erickson (I believe) talking about how easy it would be to continue to add content in the form of new planets. In fact, he made it sound like we would be bombarded with new planet after new planet. Two years later, we've had two expansions, and a grand whopping total of ONE new planet added to the game. One. New. Planet.
I think they're bringing updates at a good rate, but they aren't bringing in enough new content, unless you consider changes to the cash shop new content.
That was before the game totally flopped and experienced the mass exodus of ragequiting players.
That was when they still had 200+ People in employment working on the game, With full continuing Financial backing from EA!
Now they pretty much lost almost their entire staff and only have a small skeletal crew left working in the game.
So this is most likely a "pet" Project from a couple of devs that crunched a bunch of overtime realizing this feature, Next to their normal cash shop focus work during normal hours.
With the crew they have, it will take them at least 6 months to create a New planet zone, add content and then spend another 3 months kissing and begging EA to give them some Money for voice actors.
I don´t play this game and never will anymore (and I spend on 2x collectors edition), but even I am suprised they managed to pull this off and get it into the game.
This is not an expansion it is a content patch. I really dislike it when normal meanings for things are used for "in my opinion" marketing spin.
If GW2 or WoW called everything they did expansions the whole house of cards would fold and no one would understand what was what, it would in the words of Vork "be utter chaos".
At least the swtor dev team are making an improvement though all be it a "patch".
According to this logic, EVE never had 'Expansion' packs.
Correct, however EVE is a different type of game entirely. I would argue the only thing connecting GW2, WOW, SWTOR etc is the word MMORPG.
I would argue that when EVE calls something an "expansion" the content drop is on quite a large scale, usually involving a whole bunch of content, bug fixes and amazing graphic (engine) upgrades.
Plus SWTOR isn't really competing with EVE is it? SWTOR's competitors imo call patches like this, well, patches. I stick to my point that the market it competes in labels things like this differently.
I am a skeptic but I believe in my opinion on this.
If this isn't what people call "Double Standards", then i don't know what is. Not every EVE expansion has graphic upgrades whereas all the rest of the content has been there in SWTOR as well as any other MMO expansions.
SWTOR had "PATCH" 2.4 which added 2 new dungeons, a new planet and the dread war saga, and yes they didn't call it an expansion. When they call it an expansion (which doesn't even bloody matter since it's free content anyway), it will generally have a good amount of content.
I hate the way SWTOR turned out as much as the next guy. BUT, I have to give them props for pushing out 2 new planets since release and now, reworked space combat.
What in comparison, did we get from GW2 since release? The only permanent PVE content that I can think of is Southsun Cove and nothing more.
It's a free addition of content - everyone will get it, regardless if they want it or not. So yes - you WILL be getting it, even if you never play it. :-D

This is not the full blown space expansion most us were hoping for. I doubt we'll ever see that now. I certainly won't be returning for this that's for sure.

I disagree. Eve's content drop used to be big.
Now, CCP are making small additions and making them seem much bigger than they really are. (e.g. "player housing" is just a re-skinned crate in space for storage!)
I'm impressed with SWTOR's new expansion so far. It's not enough to make me want to return though.

Pretty much this. I believe some people aren't true Star Wars fans or never played SWG because otherwise there is no way you could look at SWTOR and say it was a great game. Boring linear progression, space that doesn't do the Star Wars IP justice, and an obvious lean towards cinematics vs. good gameplay features.
Some people will remain in denial forever though. They'll even go as far as saying SWTOR is one of the best MMORPGs out there (hilarious right?).
The haters can talk until their blue in the face. It does not matter what they do you haters will cry about it. If swg was the almighty grail of MMOs or even star wars game it would still be available. How can mature grown adults still cry about a video game two years in? How do grown mature adults cry about a video game they don't play? At what point do you move on?
i personally enjoy swtor atm but i still miss swg a lot as it did not die off cuz it was a bad game but it died cuz SOE tried to turn one of the best sandbox games into a themepark game...i guess that's the reason a lot still moan about it as a brilliant game was turned into garbage but well nothing swtor is guilty for. yet most just can't resist and blame BW/swtor i guess.
if SOE would have sticked to the first vision of swg and would have focused on improving what was already there - without revamping everything every few months - we would have swg as a sandbox game still while swtor would be the story driven themepark game and we could enjoy both
at least smedley by now knows how wrong his decision was back then and SOE seems to be taking a good course again :P

No need to get upset about it.
Don't know why people are upset about a free expansion though.

This is pretty much what he is doing. When called out on his arguments with valid points, he is just making a quick exit while avoiding the question.
Seriously though, Bioware has given tons of contents through the patches so who cares if they name one of them a patch or an expansion since it's free. When you look at the game at launch and what it is now, there is no way you can say that the content is lacking and that we need a proper "expansion". They have added expansion worth of contents gradually instead of everything together and i like it that way. People can gradually do the stuff and there is always new stuff coming up to do.

Meh, this game will be forever-scorned by those 'SWG PRE CU' vets for daring to be a SW MMO and not be SWG PRE CU.
Not sure how else Bioware could have communicated that SWTOR is not and never will be SWG PRE CU more though.
I mean other than calling every phone number on earth and playing a message 'SWTOR IS NOT SWG PRE CU!' that is. :P

Lets start with this. I for one care that they call it an expansion (as can be taken from my previous posts), this is not an expansion it is a patch. A patch for space combat.
This patch is fixing the problem of the awful space on rails combat but creating a further problem by implementing a goldfish bowl of battleground style pvp. Not free flow "space" like starwars should be.

I find it funny how some people are mentioning (or even explicitly requesting) space exploration in a Star Wars game. Are you sure you are on the right forums? This is not Star Trek.
Anyway, what we seem to be getting is PvP Warzones with spaceships. It will most likely get repetitive, the same way as do usual PvP warzones get, but hey, at least it's a step in the right direction.
Personally, I would trade this update for massive PvP on Ilum, but it will probably never happen.

Yes, these are the right forums, exploration in MMOs is quite popular, and what makes the games more unique than single player games.
