Wow.. that was bad. FFXI PVP was horrible too but this one takes the cake.

I think it's sad that a developer's efforts would be so weak in implementing such a system that it would warrant that kind of cynicism.
But then, that's been the case with most PvE MMOs that have tried implementing PvP as "token, tacked-on, side content"... And, Yoshi-P had stated looong ago that his vision for ARR is to create a MMO that is the "modern standard". I guess he nailed it!
Its better than LoTRO's pvp. But its a pve game. Hell I dont think the lore would even allow for PvP other than as an olympic game or arena.
I really enjoyed LoTRO's PvP... as in the Monster Play system. I don't know what it's like now, but when it was newer, there was action in the Ettenmoors non-stop. I'd log out at night, go to bed, get up the next morning, log in and the action would still have been continuing from the night before.
A large (huge!) battle area, multiple objectives to be taken... lots of push and pull on the battleground, , progression separate from PvE, etc... I had a blast doing that in LoTRO. There were actual quests to be completed in that zone, which helped in developing your "Creep". In fact, when I think about it, it's the only PvE MMO I've ever played where the PvP actually felt like a proper, fleshed out system, and not just something tacked on; the one exception to the remarks in my previous post. And hey, at least Turbine tried a new twist on it.

And you think LoL is without imbalance? I guess all of the champion changes aren't really needed then.
you can pick the stronger ones like your enemies can. that's where balance comes from. imbalance is only relevant when you're race-locked or class-locked etc.
And you can pick the stronger classes for pvp in this game... How is that an arguement? You can also play all classes in this particular game on the same character so by your logic your never imbalanced in ffarr....
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.
Yeah they shouldve made it to look like the fighters were running circles around each other like headless chickens spamming skills. Thats what true PvPers want to see!
Looks pretty awful. There is a built in delay when sensing where a character is, it means people will be getting hit when it looks like they are out of range.
No sort of pvp balance for classes.
It is something else to do I guess, but I can't believe anyone interested in pvp will enjoy it much.
Every MMO has built in delay. Clients do not poll or communicate with a server in real time. It would result in network congestion and bottlenecks.
You have no idea on balance, nor does anyone else outside of SE currently. I believe they have already stated there will be different skills for PvP.

So you are saying this video is what true pvpers want to see?

Instanced pvp? I was reading about the game to see if I may want to buy it. Seeing that for pvp is sad though. I don't like being crammed into an instanced pvp area like the arenas/bgs in WoW. Open pvp is best for me.
Still reading a bit more about the game before deciding.

The game is obviously slanted toward PVE and crafting but there will be larger scale PVP coming up:
Frontlines
Frontlines is designed for large scale PvP battles and will feature epic battles between the three city-states of Gridania, Limsa Lominsa and Ul'dah as they battle for control over some newly discovered ancient ruins and the secrets within. Unlike The Wolves' Den you will be open to attack as long as you are in the zone; if you are in it then you are part of the battle.
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

Correct, for those who don't know it will be 3 faction pvp with pvp skills and gear to earn. Also, crafters will be involved as well though we don't know in what capacity yet.
Unfortunately there has not been a slated time frame for this that I have found. Might not make an appearance til next October. No way to tell.

Last time I checked there isn't even a date set for 2.1. No telling how far off 2.2 or 2.3 are and that was the point of my post. This is closer to the PvP I am looking for, but I'm not going to continue to sub until there is a date set for it.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.
Seriously though, clearly you know every single aspect of the PvP, so why not enlighten us? Tell us EXACTLY how EVERY aspect of PvP will work, go ahead, i'll wait....

I'm a sucker for open world pvp, but i love instanced pvp just as much...this is pvp in its most basic form, kill or be killed no objectives and unlike a lot of peoples negative views of this i think i'm going to enjoy it and likely resub.
No offense guys, but since when have square EVER shown much of an interest in PvP. They add it, as a tacked on feature, but I find it highly unrealistic to be looking to a game like Final Fantasy for balanced, meaningful PvP. It's just not likely to happen. Square has always been known for making fleshed out, and graphically engaging PvE experiences & storylines. They just aren't a company that focuses on PvP at all, really. The closest thing to that they've ever come was in some of the mini games (like blitzball). But that's not really the same thing.
That said, one just has to look at how classes currently work in the game (on a fundamental lvl) to know the PvP in this game (arena or largescale) is going to be completely broken. Wanna PvP as a BLM? Good luck, all someone has to do is run circles around you to disrupt your casts. Which doesn't even get into the available and stuns / silences by the other classes. Bards can simply kite for days while doing their damage, in addition to having a ranged silence (which essentially counters ever other ranged class but summoner).
Tanks, while having significant health pools, essentially don't do enough damage to be that much of a problem, PLD may have some nice CC, but very limited range, and pitiful damage. WAR have decent damage, and ridiculous health pool, but crap CC.
Honestly, I could write an entire article on the balance issues this game will have when it comes to PvP, but there'd be no point. I doubt Square is going to completely redesign all their classes to make them PvP viable, just as I doubt any serious PvPers are even considering this game as a potentially viable option for PvP.

PvE and PvP are completely separate. In every way. Skills, gear, all of it. This much we know from developer blogs/live letters/etc
Which brings me back to what i said earlier. A video with no real information is kinda pointless lol, and puts people who are otherwise ignorant due to not keeping up with the information impressions like the one above.

So they've said. However they have yet to show us evidence of this. I do not doubt they might change how a couple skills function, but they haven't said anything about the details of this. I've seen the PvP armor. Something that, while it might look interesting, does absolutely nothing to change the core mechanics of a game. It's static buffs, not dynamic changes. They've mentioned they are looking at changing some skills, but again no details.
However, how does any of that change how some classes are rooted and others are not? Or the input delay the servers have that give certain classes (the ones with a high amount of instant cast abilities) an advantage over others. The answer is, it doesn't. I haven't seen a single game, where puting on a cat suit makes your classes behave fundamentally different. Furthermore, their PvP preview videos all show static combat. Something that people in this same thread have acknowledged as unrealistic, as real PvP combat is not static. People move. So, where does this magically change?
You seem to have detailed knowledge of the mechanics that the rest of us do not. If so then please share it. Otherwise you are just buying into marketing hype and passing it off as fact. I've played plenty of square & square-enix games. Including FFXI. None of them have had good PvP. And last I checked, they haven't really done anything to lead me to believe that this time around should be any different.
I haven't seen any people brought into their team with extensive experience in designing skill-based PvP systems. Honestly, I expect the PvP might still be fun, but I see no reason to expect a fully fleshed-out, & robust PvP system on par with what we see in other games. Things like that take years to design well. Square is attempting to do it in a few months.
- Again, if you have information the rest of us don't. Please share it. Let us know why you know the PvP is going to be awesome. Tell us how they are fixing core issues with classes. How are they making casters more viable? Are they removing how they get rooted on cast? Are they getting rid of all the gap closers & CC melee has? Are they re-coding how their game engine fundamentally works when it comes to things like LOS, cast interruptions, input lag, etc.? These are all things I have seen zero info on.
So again, if you know more about this, please share.

Looks like it's a preview of a pvp arena.. and it looks like a pvp arena. I don't really see a problem. I didn't see where it said anywhere that this is the only pvp that would ever be in the game. Could someone show me where it said that? Perhaps I just missed it...
