I have no problem with catch up. I actually have proposed to do away with leveling completely and just make the entire game accessable to all at all times. There is a catch h to that last statement though, the catch is you have to be skilled enough to open up the next encounter or set of encounters. I love raiding in WoW before raid finder, what drove me to raid was seeing the new content that not many have seen outside of a YouTube video, and knowing I am one of the few that has actually made it this far. Now with raidfinder its just stupid and the sense of accomplishment is removed even though it has nothing to do with me. So view leveling as an accomplishment, but it is not, leveling is just a time sink. There is a difference between reaching max level and reaching the final raid boss, one takes time and one takes time and skill.

That's why there is Raid Finder, Flex, Normal, and Heroic - and in WoD there will be Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic (with Normal and Heroic being Flexible.)
They didn't throw away the bar, they just moved it.

Nope, brand new account gets the 1 boosted character to 90 instantly.

I had a lot of fun playing WoW and I have a lot of fond memories of playing WoW, but that level 80 stuff is just, ugh. It's not the game. I played a priest from 1 to about level 35 or so when Cata released and it was fine. I hopped on my level 80 toons after the priest and just couldn't play. Heck, I'd be tempted to play if I could add 5 levels to both of my level 80 characters just so I could skip the Cata stuff.
What makes you think you would like the 90 - 100 content ? Also @ Robert Lashley , doesn't the fact you didn't play your insta level 80 warrior tell you one reason why it's a terrible idea ? Again would/will you play an insta level 90 in the next expansion of wow ?
Another reason why it is bad is the fact some players would be a level 90 newb or even a noob , now would you wan't to play high level content with a player like that ? Someone who doesn't know how to play their character. The community will be segregated totally.
The insta high level gamers would possibly become very bored , possibly as in Mr. Robert's case to the point they don't even feel like playing on said character. Okay so the dev's feel it's an old game so what will make people come back or buy our expansion and TBH I can see a little where they are coming from , but these players will be burnt out very quickly.
Maybe it's the end-game mentality that players and developers have that has caused this and if you think about it if levelling up a character sounds boring or too much to do then why on earth are you playing an MMO ?
I will conclude by letting you into a secret in the final few weeks of PSO on the DC , I did test out an exploit ( bad badorb ) just to see what it was all about and it instantly made you max level 200 , now the character had no items for that level and also no actual need to play at all , it removed the sense of achievement for me on said character , it was the most boring thing I have ever done in an MMO and I won't be repeating it. i deleted the character obviously. Wasn't all bad though as i bought the game in an other incarnation on the GC a few months later and enjoyed the whole game again , until they brought out the card battle version of the game , then I stopped soon after as it was weird.
Tl;Dr It brings no sense of achievement , thus boredom sets in , makes you feel like a high level newb/noob , it hurts the community , go play the full game people.
Just to add if it happens in an MMO I am playing I think it is 95% likely that I would insta leave.
Cheers,
BadOrb.
I have no idea if I would like even the level 85+ content, but I am absolutely sure I do not like the level 80 to 85 content. This sentiment has been echoed back to me by several people who still play the game. Those same people seem to be pretty happy with the level 85 to 90 content, so it's an assumption on my part, but I believe I might actually like that content, in addition to the low level content that still seems to be able to hold my interest.
So while I might actually get bored, there is no other way I'd spend money on the game. Given that Blizzard is doing what they are doing, I'm guessing that I'm not the only one. WoW is in decline and the only thing to do now is to slow that decline down as much as possible.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I think it's fine for themepark games that have been around for many years. Particularly since your level isn't really meaningful and can be quickly attained anyway.
It would be inappropriate in games where attaining a high level takes a great deal of work and is an accomplishment.
Let us assume that Blizzard does allow instant leveling. So what do you have. You have character that has level 90 skills but no armor. Cannot have that Blizz will say so they will give them 90 level armor. Then where can they go - they have no exploring history. So Blizz will give them access to all waypoints. You see where this is going? What this instant leveling will turn out to be is to provide a complete pre-made character. Heck they might even give them 1000 gold - after all - what can a level 90 do without any money!
On the other hand, I am leveling a monk from 1 to 90. Although I am really having a nostalgia trip in doing so there are times when I would just as soon level up to 90 with a click. I am definitely seeing one drawback - crafting. I tried to stay up with leatherworking and had to give up before 200. It was too hard/long to get mats and there was nothing on the auction house. No, there are definite drawbacks to instant leveling - unless Blizzard REALLY wants to cheat.
I also think it's important to note that, for over a decade, MMO companies have adamantly been against the notion of selling characters/accounts with high level toons.
So, after years upon years of saying "You can't sell your high level/well-geared accounts", now the tune has changed to "You can only do it if you do it through our method."
What's the difference? Where is the line drawn? Blizzard and others frown upon someone purchasing a level 90 account that's decked out in full raid gear and leveled crafts, but smiles upon granting a free level 90 character to a new player? Explain how that isn't hypocrisy in every sense.
Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

As soon as these companies realized they could profit from selling in game currency even if indirectly (GW2 gems, Plex, Krono's, etc.) this was coming. Don't think for a second that Blizzard won't ban you for buying a power leveled toon from someone if they find out after they start to allow this. If anything they will get even more aggressive about protecting their market place.
I also don't by for second that they are still considering allowing players to buy additional leveled toons. There is no considering about it the decision has been made and it's just a matter of timing at this point. There is way to much money to be made off selling auto leveled toons.
On the one hand you could say they are removing the ugly side of third party purchases. On the other you could just as easily argue that they are introducing a much more significant conflict of interest problem for the developers moving forward. Allowing these kinds of things makes it really hard to make significant changes to in the game economy without creating the appearance of doing so solely for the benefit of your cash shop items.
Like Spock said. Things have a shelf life. Also if I'm new I want to play with my friends. Not spend the better part of a month getting to the point where I can level 90 to 100 with them and they shouldn't have to make a new character to play with me.
If they can't be bothered to roll up an alt to play with you you have some pretty sucky friends, just saying.
If they restricted it to people who already have capped characters I could see it more but if new players have to skip a large part of the game just because their friends are impatient, that's kind of sad.
But after all it's WoW we're talking about from the company that perfected gear grind treadmill. May as well get people into the skinner box as quickly as possible I guess.
Blizzard has no moral standards ONLY greed for money at an idea they once laughed at,now the hypocritical truth comes out.
They couldn't care less about the standards of their game or the players, they see a chance to encourage players to buy the new expansion so they are vaulting them directly to a stage of spending more money.
Where does this lead down the road?Eventually others copy the cash greed, then it becomes standard in all games from day 1.Then what, every game goes f2p and starts selling levels?
Do i need to explain the long term effect once it becomes standard?>>>The same reason cheating is no good, the game economy will be borked and big time.
Why don't we just sell the best weapon and armor in the game as well, what is the difference? Why not just go full tilt cash shop and sell every last thing in the game?
So what happens now in PUGS?Players flaming each other calling them noobs because they bought their player? What happens in chat?"Looking for experienced players to do so and so dungeon,NO bought account players".
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
RPG's are all about character development. The oldest MMO's I played didn't have quests, or at least not as we know them now. You lived in the worlds, had time to talk to people, and each level you got a bit better. You got some stats, or new skills, etc. You earned these levels by killing monsters, but at some time people started to call this grinding, instead of just playing the game.
Wow came, and you could level up by just doing quests. No more grinding kills. But at some point this type of leveling was called "quest grinding". So in all their wisdom MMO companies started to speed up the process of getting levels, to a point where it took me just 2-3 days in Rift to get to the highest level.
And here we are now. Along with all the XP potions that became available in the F2P shops, we now get instant leveling. "Yay forget all this crap of getting levels and developing character."
How did we get from living in a world for a year and still not getting to end level, to making a new account and "poof, welcome to your final destination?" I don't know, can we agree that this type of attitude has nothing to do with the RPG aspects of games?
And now we get to the meat of the conversation. I'll argue that MMO*RPG* doesn't exist anymore. The Idea of playing games in virtual worlds for the social aspect is dead. Instead the new trend (essentially) is just to have online games. You still play together. You still have the MMO tropes, but the concepts and standards we enjoyed back in the day are gone and I don't have confidence they will come back.
instant max level fits perfectly within that construct. As someone said here, why waste money to make shallow leveling content that no one revisits (by and large) when you can get all players playing together with the key being the purchase of the expansion. Think about it. Would you drop 40 bones if you knew you had to slog through 90 levels? maybe. But more would buy it if they could experience after purchase.
they have been making leveling and deep role playing shallow for years because they want to change the genre. And they are successfully on their way. And you know who THEY are...
Blizzard has no moral standards ONLY greed for money at an idea they once laughed at,now the hypocritical truth comes out.

The sky isn't falling chicken little. People have been buying max lvl characters in wow since day..well 7 ( as fast as one could be power leveled ) It's not going to bring the whole system down!!!1111
All companies want your money. To pretend like it's anything else is being naive. They all do whatever they think they can get away with to get the maximum amount of money they can from you. And if noob is the only thing people get called in a wow that would probably be an improvement.
The thing is, it's a self solving problem, really. If you're grouped with someone who can't tell his ass from a hole in the ground about his character, it's going to be obvious. And if it isn't obvious, then you're not better than he.
I think one more thing (though slightly unrelated) needs to be mentioned here.
This announcement coupled with D3's removal of the RMAH screams of cashgrab efforts. Blizzard didn't remove that RMAH because they cared about the players; 15 months of it being active demonstrates their total disinterest in what the players wanted. They removed it, and only after raking in what I would estimate to be millions of RMT transactions a day, because so many people had lost interest in the game that it was no longer as profitable as it once was.
When you think about these 2 gestures alone, you probably get angry. When you realize it's the same company, twice engaging in a "We care about our players!" cashgrab/publicity stunt in 1 year, it's kind of revolting. If you want to make changes to your business/product, by all means, do so. But don't keep using the guise of "We care" when it's really just an additional effort to make money off of people in a different way.

Though the conspiracy theorist might think this was done to force people to buy additional new accounts if they wanted more than one of these instant 90 characters.

I think the idea is good. You now have the classic wow and 5 expansions. I enjoyed each of them the first time. Leveling through a new expansion was always a lot of fun and I would recommend for every new player to just enjoy the huge amount of content and start at lvl 1. But the instant level might for some be the reason to play again. It's a long way to catch up to the new expansion, some people may have quit somewhere between 1-90 and may want to play with their friends but don't want to level through multiple expansions.
For people who already have got a 90 it means that they can try out a different class, some trade skills or the other faction which is also good. I don't enjoy to repeat the quests again and again for each twink. And to the people who say this shows only how bad the game is, I don't think that most people would enjoy to play Skyrim or FinalFantasy multiple times.
To the "did not learn to play the class issue". I don't think this is a valid point at all. You learn to play the class in endgame or in pvp and not while you level from 1-90. And we are all computer gamers who played so many different games with different skills, mechanics and controls, I don't think its a unsolvable challenge to just play a 90 char that you did not play 1-90.
I've experienced instant leveling in multiple games. I've already obtained free instant high level characters in Everquest 2, Mu Online, Tera and Vindictus.
Would you like to know how I feel about those characters? I don't even remotely care about them. They're worthless to me.
Characters and the games in question are only meaningful when you invest time, effort or money into them. Obtaining a high level character with no time, effort or money spent is equivalent to creating a character at level 1 for most players.
It's just another meaningless avatar that you'll happily abandon if the game doesn't cater to your needs within the first 5 minutes.
I think this instant leveling stuff is wrong and a poor move by developers. Why waste money creating content that people won't play? Why even have levels if you're willing to make them meaningless?
It's stupid and somebody deserves to be slapped for it.
I'll only support the instant high level character mechanic if it requires an existing high level character to use.
I played through 1-80 in age of conan in 2010 and it was quite a struggle, Because The way the quests were designed were pretty average and tedious.
After leveling one character, I have taken advantage of the instant 80 options because even though i have leveled 2 characters 'the old fashioned way' i really don't find doing the content fun or good for my sanity.
HOWEVER, if the leveling content was addictivly fun then there would be no issue.
In the case of wow, just making the content fast, or being able to skip it just side steps the issue. make the leveling part of the game relative and fun.
Obviously tho, the most cost effective thing for them to do is issue free level 90's because of the Endgame mentality they have instilled into the community.

As OP says "I’m not advocating pay to win. I do not believe that developers should sell advantages to players but I find nothing wrong with selling players a convenience of joining others in a game that’s getting long in the tooth." I agree IF(!) player have already leveled at least one alt or more to max and he KNOW how to play. One need to LEARN to play and this is not possible giving somebody alt to max if have never played before. Would not like to have any1 like that in group. It is like giving to somebody car that have never sit behind steering wheel for reason that "he would like to race with friends that are driving cars for years. That argument does not hold.

Go to a external forum, browse the max leveled characters being sold for 200$, etc.
I think what is frustrating to players, is that their previous effort has been marginalized.
