Apparently there is a PVE server but massively over-subscribed.

The designers of these games NEVER get the PvP right, god knows why.  They assume that "bandits" (for want of a better word) will be few and far between and that the bulk of the server population will all flock to each other with group hugs all round, building a cosy settlement of like-minded people.  They are then supposed to help and defend each other and, for light relaxation, sit around the campfire singing "Kumbaya".

Instead of this Utopian society the game invariably devolves into a "Kill on Sight" gankfest as the players with the good gear cull the noobs for shits and giggles rather than the puny gear they carry.

    The devs never, ever learn.

You can still get all your stuff nicked the moment you log out regardless of which server you are on.

I haven't played but the reviews I have read basically said the following: -

You turn up into the world naked and get shot in the head.  You gather some materials to try to make a weapon, get shot in the head again and the materials stolen.  Eventually by hiding behind trees you manage to get some sort of rudimentary weapon together, remembering that the nodes are few and far between.  You then get shot in the head.  You respawn and get shot again.  You then gather some more materials, build a hut to store them in and log out.  Whilst you are logged out someone breaks into your hut and steels all your stuff.  You log back in and get shot in the head.

This is not my idea of fun.

the game is still in alpha guys.  yes there are greifers.  yes getting started can be frustrating.  you will get killed,  a lot.   play on a lower pop server.  try to make nice with your neighbors.  not everyone in the game is a ****.  they are planning to add more defenses for bases so they aren't so easily robbed.  the game is not complete.  it's in alpha.  if you don't want to play a game in the early stages of development then don't buy it.  but,  don't pass judgement on it when it's not even in beta yet.

You made me smile with that description!   "I used to play Rust until I took a shot to the head.... many, many times."  :D

Yeah, it sounds like this game probably shouldn't even be open to players yet.  I can't imagine having fun in a game where nothing is safe...ever.  At least in Darkfall you have a bank that people can't take your stuff out of.

it's very playable,  and very fun.  if you build a good base,  you don't get robbed.  people build one room shacks and except their loot to be safe,  then go to the forums and complain.

    Won't last long.

DayZ is very similar in play style and setup. People seem to be long term crazy about that game. It may not be the greatest thing for MMORPGs, but it seems to be really popular with smaller scale MMOs. Personally I'm not a big fan of the style of game, but there are definitely people out there who are. Enough to make a couple of developers a ton of money, as long as they write decent games.

Here, we talk about people able to come in massive groups, even when you're not even online, and destroy everything you have created.

I can only see extreme masochists playing such a game.

Not a bad idea - I could play this a couple of hours a day instead of hitting my testicles with a hammer!

The login and get sniped loop seems to be common to both games. :-)

I don't know if I'd call the people playing masochists or not. Perhaps they are just very determined, or maybe the challenge of randomly finding a spawn point that lets them live is fun to them.

As I said, I'm not sure I would have fun in RUST, but there definitely seem to be a bunch of people who want to have fun in RUST.

This is the kind of game I would run screaming from. I cannot really stomach having my hard work simply destroyed for no reason other than to fuel someone else's idea of fun.

Wurm Online is far from a gankfest and has everything this game has and more.

I think I'd play this if there was PVE servers and players didn't have Admin rights..........

Looking at the trailer I am quite impressed how it looks and I would like to see how long I could actually survive in that game.

Of course there are always going to be griefers... might do what I did in GW2, lure them to an edge of a cliff and let them fall off it.

What's interesting in this thread is the majority of people who play the game love it and those that dislike it do so by referencing others who don't yet they have not played the game.

    RUST is awesome!

game is just horrible...i shoudl have read all the reviews before i waisted 20 bucks on steam...if you enjoy starving, being lots, starving, dying, being killed by a holes, being spawn camped, and not ever having a sense of accomplishment then THIS is the game for you! The game is just a huge deathmatch when u spawn and u will be dead within 15 mins form a kid whos found a gun n can do whatever he wants....

"game has a 16km x 16km world!" SO WHAT! NOTHING and i repeat NOTHING but trees n mountains spawn 1k outside of spawn...no animals no mining nodes NO NOTHING! so if u try to get away from all the campers and gankers you will just starve to death....

"you can build a house and be safe in it!" REALLY! cuz i did that....spend 5 hrs last night building a house with TWO doors and went to bed(you never really log out in this game) and logged on the next day and i was dead and my base gone....YUP sound FOOKING FUN to me!....

THE BIGGEST MOST BS part of this game is the fact you can NEVER! EVER! log out! When u click that disconnect button you will STILL STAY LOGGED in the game....you char will just lay down and go to sleep WAITING for other PKers to come and kill u.....BOY DONT THAT SOUND FUN!

This game is a disaster....and has along way to go before it can be stable and self sustaining....man i wish i can get my 20 back....

I give you one tip for this game to enjoy it, don't bother building/crafting anything, just gang up with a few mates and steal the stuff from other players, that's really what this game is about.

Basically stealing the fun from other players and making it your own.

This game community is already toxic as it is, just wait a few more weeks ;p and the LoL community will look like a kindergarten.

Playable Game World - Very Small

"We are constraining players to a tiny area of about 6 square kilometers. The future level will be 64 square kilometers but everything will be used. The current level is 256 square kilometers."

250 players using an area of just  6 quare kilometers, seems like most of the map is just empty and therefore some will just starve to death. In DayZ  50 players using a playable map of 225 square kilometers, no wonder  people write they die so often in Rust. This sounds way too small.

The playable map filled with content is allegedly only around the road, seen on this map:

Rust is awesome.  I never thought I would like this type of game but,  it's great.

I play a lone-wolf and although it is difficult at times it can be very rewarding.  yes,  there are grievers and people that kos.  but,  there are in every game.  people will break into your base (or attempt to) and you will die and lose items.  it's not hard to rebuild your base or get more items or even relocate to a better location.  also,  not everyone is douche bag.  there are other people like (you) or me that don't play just to ruin other people fun.  there is voice comm in the game so there is no excuse to not try to make friendly with people.  not everyone will be friendly but when someone shoots you for no reason you then know who not to trust.

if you are turned off by a certain server try a different one.  the servers make a difference.  not only by the people that play on it,  but also by the amount of people.  if you don't want to bothered by other players so much pick a server with a lower population cap.

learn to build better bases.  you will inevitably get robbed at some point.  learn from it.  how did they break in?  everytime I've been robbed it has helped me build a better base.  the last few bases I have built have been penetrated but they did not get near my loot.  I learned to make it very difficult for bandits to get at my stuff.  a lot of players wont even attempt to break into some bases because it is a hassle and the cost of breaking in would not be worth the loot.  some player just break in because they think it's fun.  it can be frustrating but when they don't succeed it can be rewarding.

it is frustrating that most multiplayer survival games turn into death matches.  but,  imo Rust is not to the extreme that some other games are.  make nice with your neighbors,  live near them,  help eachother protect your bases.

Rust is in better shape than most alpha/beta games I've played.  it is well worth the $20,  and only looks to get better.
