Wildstar looks like sci-fi in a warcraft world...The colors and artwork look so much like WoW....I think it will work if for no other reason it will look familiar to most players.
I'm really hoping for that open beta. Carbine has been saying and showing all the right things to get me hyped, but my 'don't buy a game without a trial' plan has served me well since this industry went to shit so I'm sticking with it.
WoW clones fail because people who want to play a game very similar to WoW are already playing WoW and invested in it. The people who for whatever reason are not playing WoW now are generally not looking for a game that's almost exactly the same as WoW.
What does this game have to offer that WoW doesn't? The scifi setting? 40 man raids? Ok, there is improved combat but that's about it. For a game 9 years younger than WoW the graphics are hardly any better. WoW will even likely have better character models come next expansion. I see Wildstar as releasing a product that there is almost no demand for.
You're right, but that's part of what Gaffney mentioned. If you're playing WoW and loving it, great. He's focused on people that have quit that game (and others) and are looking for something new, or haven't tried an MMO before.
As to why it's better? For now the combat's better, the questing is better, the dungeons are more interesting and the PvP battlegrounds are much more fun. But longer term is an unknown because we haven't seen endgame. We've heard details of raids that change every week, massive warplots, and regular content updates that might be as frequent as GW2. Hopefully, we'll get more concrete information in the next few months.
People who quit WoW left for a reason, and they did not resubscribe for a reason. Why if people enjoyed what WoW/Rift/SWTOR had to offer are they not playing those games now? People can even play various WoW clones for free now, improving the combat is really going to be enough to draw people back to a type of game they won't even play for free now?
People who haven't tried an mmo? Really? FFXIV/SWTOR/ESO are all more likely to draw in orders of magnitude higher non-mmo players because they have a built in non-mmo fan base.
No, the questing is really not any better it's exactly the same. I'll grant you that the combat does improve the PvP experience.
The Housing System will be the reason i probably stick around in Wildstar. If you havent watched the housing video I think it is a must. Kind of reminds me of Monster Hunter where you had the farm and hired the cats to do things for you .

I never thought i'd ever say this, but i like WoW's colors and artwork much more.
While Wildstar uses sort of the same textures, the overall design and color palettes in WoW are way better.
On many pics and in many clips Wildsta has a very low contrast allover. Huge part in that is the absence of any shadows in many sceneries. Also the colors arent always well tuned to each other..in lack of better wording.

I am kind of concerned they are taking hints on monthly development from GW2. While the idea sounds good, it really depends on 1, what they have at release and 2. ofc what they can develop that is worthy content in a month.
number 2, is a big variable here.
Assuming developers are vets at making MMOs then point 1 would put the game in great condition for them to work on larger projects. Putting only small content might keep the game too much of the same, but at the same time it depends on what kind they develop in such a short time.
For example lets assume their monthly content is one of 3 things 1. story, 2. pvp, 3, raids. Thats just more of the same, while nice, it creates other problems... that people have too much content that is too much of the same all piling up on one character in a game that has a gear grind meaning.... that alting requires a lot of effort.
So, how are they going to consider the problem of alting? While adding more content does not seem like too much of the same, and becomes a negative in a themepark MMO.
And, while they have the expertise in development, they would know that they can develop this kind of content monthly but what about other larger projects. How will that fare? How much longer will it take?
For example we saw that they have interesting tricks on a surf board as a method of travel. How polished is that for release. I doubt I could do a multitude of tricks such as grabs, spins, flips and grinds in the envrionment. So why not add that?
Or what about music. Allow players to make thier own content with music, and other new possible ideas.
There is a lot they can add, and just adding more of the same makes me think they are going to miss out on fixing some issues with alting, and of course not develop other content quickly enough.
Month to month content is a small extra. The novelty wears out fast especially to me as a veteran of MMOs. I am looking for the things I am mentioning and really new mechanics, and new content and not one more skin to pvp with a small mechanic here or there... but something a bit bigger than that... or it will feel like more of the same... then if it does, how does the previous iteration of the game hold up with it being more of the same. With that being said, WS looks like at launch it cna hold my interests for months, but I hope ti can develop new content that goes beyond that, and just month to month content, will most likely be small and not what I would be hoping for.
Write bad things that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble
I am in the beta and have been since the first beta invites went out. I think it is a very well done game, but it doesn't really feel any different to me than any of the other MMOs out there. I.e. I probably won't drop the one I'm playing to pick it up once it release...there just isn't a compelling reason to do so.
In all fairness though, I am in the camp that doesn't find cartoony graphics appealing, so I have a built in bias against it.

...snip...
I wouldn't worry about this too much. I don't think they are copying GW2. This is a trend seen across the entire industry. If you can't get content out fast enough players lose interest. Even wow is trying desperately to speed up their patch cycle. From what devs have been saying they have put a ton of effort into making sure their systems are easily modifiable and support a fast release schedule. I would imagine they would have organized their content teams with the same goals in mind. You can have content that takes longer than a couple weeks to create in your patches, you simply have to stagger the teams so they rotate at the pace of your desired patch schedule. Whether or not they can actually do it is another story, but it appears they have put a lot of thought into the process. Also I would imagine that there is isn't something for everybody every patch, but if they do the patches like they have designed content for the game I would imagine they are intent on making stuff for different people so one patch might be a new dungeon, another might be a new quest series, another might be a new housing feature.
Has it all been done before? Yep, but they seem to be polishing it up into a very fun experience.
That is one thing a lot of people seem to forget. Vanilla WoW did very little that was new. It mostly just did what had already been done with a much, much higher level of polish.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
I don't see any wining all I see is some people liking beta .... Wait til release and wait til 3 months after release beta hype means little and nothing personally I have seem about the game scream it's won at all.
My point is let's all calm down let the hype vanish and try it after it's released.
This game seems like the same old same old but then again I never got a beta invite.....

This game might work. Hard to say. This game completely reminds me of WoW with action combat that is quite simply boring to me. I really wanted to like it. When I saw the first video - I was slightly reminded of firefly. I really appreciate some of the humor they tried to bring with this game, but it just falls short.
I hope those who enjoy/aren't tired of this formula enjoy the game, but it's definitely not for me.
I think it has a better shot than average to succeed. I am a new join to this website, but I have read plenty of the comments in the last couple months. While reading these forums I see a recurring theme, negativity and elitism. I think there are plenty of people out there who want any new game to fail simply because it doesn't fit their mold of what makes a good MMO. I have seen plenty of comments where it seems they are genuinely upset WS, ESO, etc. I am more than open to opposing views, that spurs good discussion, but what is the point of commenting on a game you absolutely despise. It is your opinion, but if you don't plan on playing the game because you hate the subgenre, you don't like the payment model, or you are tired of a certain mechanic, what are you adding to the discussion besides "this game sucks, its the same old thing". It isn't constructive and usually starts an argument by getting off topic. I bet even this post will ignite someone to spew hatred toward me and how I'm stifling free speech. If you like sand box titles, great, theme park, awesome, but preferring one over the other doesn't make you above the fray.
Wildstar is an interesting beast. The art style will put a lot of people off, but i suspect those that like it will love the game. It is intrinsically part of the "over the top" cartoony humour of the game. Most likely there are 3 kinds of people in the world:
Very nice article, great sum up of a lot of different systems in Wildstar (some of which I had missed to be honest, even though I've been following the game for a while)!
I'm personally a bit worried about the fresh content. WoW had a fairly good raid output system for end-game, which was very fun since I personally am not an alt-oholic. However, I've not heard Carbine state anything clear on PvE endgame rollouts (apart from "we're old-school raiders, we'll cater to old-school raiders"). If they can delivery the same pleasure and entertainment value I got from WoW a while back then I'll be throwing my money at them for a good number of months, if not years.
I see a lot of people writting about how the graphics are like WoW, but I think they have said multiple times its meant to have a Pixar kind of vibe and I see it. It is way more vibrant and colorful than WoW.
as A Gm of a large wow guild for the last year.. I have been upfront and honest with my mates. Wildstar is the game I am moving to. I have played action combat in neverwinter and in Tera. I have also played GW2. Wildstar's combat is far superior to all of them combined. I have also had the pleasure of trying the beta. I stopped not because I was having fun.. but because I would have ended up shirking my duties as an attentive guild leader of a 6 year old guild. '
I can just imagine the day my guild in Wildstar builds our first warplot .. and the first day we setup a raid boss as a guardian of that war plot. I am absolutely stoked for this game.

Gamers like this one will be this games support. The problem is, you will find most people will destest the 40 man raids. People come and go in a MMO, far too hard to keep 40 players together to finish a raid. Blizzard was smart to eliminate them. I always question those that repeat others mistakes.
I wish Wildstar luck, but I have had enough of cartoony graphics, TSO will have much better pvp imo.
Originally posted by bcbully Will it work? No. questing, dungeons, crafting and battle grounds. I really don't care how you spin these things, after the shinny wares off, it's the same old same.
But then look at GW2. It is just exactly the same thing with a very thin paint job to hide it is, yet people so openly embraced it as change. Sure its hype died pretty quickly on that end, but it was enough to spark interest. Heck, FF14 ARR was an old school MMO practically, yet it received so much attention and enjoyment, not even attempting to hide it was an old school MMo designed.
The reason those systems are in play are since it WORKS. A game won't fail because it has it. Games are better with it, its not about having less of it, its about having more options including those that can make a game do well.
Will it work means a few million subs in a few years. All these dressed up clones that run at 250k subs don't make for a busy mmo. GW2 is a ghost world when levelling a new char for example. Same as Rift. Same as FF ....
If Wildstar keeps the humor in the game like it's videos have, the game will rock! That gives the game an edge over nearly all the other games. After all I believe there are a lot of folks that play mmo's for their entertainment value.
I have subscriptions for several games each to me is unique for the genre's they represent. Some may have mechanics like the others but the entertainment value is there for each. Wildstar appears to have an added appeal with it's humor.
Maybe it will, maybe be won't. But to me personally, it doesn't matter. After the City of Heroes debacle, I refuse to purchase anything else by NCSoft.
