I have no actual hope for this game, but their emphasis on grouping is a step in the right direction. I will NEVER again play a game that you can solo all the way through.
God I miss the days of XP parties in FFXI...
Why is soling so bad? You honestly think spamming LFG's, getting in group queue's while being unable to progress, and not accomplishing anything worthwhile is what good for the genre? Not everyone that plays these games are part of a large/broad social guild that has access to instant group action. Some of us actually play these games in spurts or have odd play times outside the norm. Or at the very least have outside lives that take precedent over gaming. Not to mention how many here played a game like EQ or DAoC with brutal leveling restrictions and the vast majority of classes rolled were the ones considered "soloing" classes.
It's really funny that all people take away from old school MMO's is the forced grouping aspect and all the negative connotations it brought. I don't know about anyone else but old school MMO's were fun, rewarding and engaging because of many aspects such as:
Open Worlds
Freedom of choice in progression
Exploration based content
Minimalistic hand holding
long engaging progression systems
Deep, meaningful progression
Item Based economies
Hard Content
Dungeons that took hours to explore and finish
Risk versus Reward gameplay
All of the things that made old school MMO's great can be made without having forced grouping. There's just nothing rewarding about that whole aspect and is one of the few things new school MMO's seemed to have gotten right.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
Originally posted by UOlover The testing that you are paying for will be going on way before 2017. Brad is going to make sure this one has a year+ testing just like EQ1 had
Well at least your honest that people will be paying Brad to test his game, but if you think they are gonna have a game ready to test in less then 3 years your crazy. Right now all they have is a few concept arts and some ideas theres 10 devs working out of their homes no office and Brads the manager with no oversight. As someone already pointed out with a 800K budget the devs will probably not be working full time on This MMO as who can afford to live off of 20k or less a year.
What you'll get is a few devs working part time while Brad does another kickstater every year for the next 6-7 years or as long as he can get away with it.
I said that because the kickstarter says alpha and beta both begin on "january 2017". Which is obviously impossible
there's no plural there, no oblique reference to being one of many. ya, this guy seems to be more and more of a winner.
"There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play." Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse
My favorite feature of this game: it's not meant for everybody! Unfortunately many of you can't read that. It's racking up fundage quickly so jump in now before pledges run out!
So the KS will continue to be updated... On the fence people aside.. If you're an old school player that misses those type of games this is your chance to put your money where your mouth is.. I know Brad and team can get this done but that only part of the reason I donated. I donated as a vote towards the future of MMOs.. I'm so bored with games.. This is also about bringing awareness to other gaming companies!
Brad and team couldn't get this done if someone gave them 40 million dollars and 100 developers ... Oh wait someone already did that it was called Vanguard. Now with 10 developers and not even a 10th of the budget (if they made 4 million) they are saying they are gonna do it in even less time, Seriously your dreaming.
Its sad that so many are still on the fence about this or better yet continue to throw hate
Bottom line is this is about the big picture people. We need this game to succeed, why? Because it lets the publishers know that our audience who wants these type of games still exist.
If this game fails at the Kickstarter level be prepared to see
More console exclusive mmos
More shallow rush to endgame who gives a damn about the journey casual easy mode garbage
MMO's (can't call them rpgs) have become shallow shadows upon themselves. The most prevalent gamer in these games nowadays are anti socials who are just content with seeing people around them, grouping up with them in PUGs and hardly saying a word.
Even the roleplayers are Anti Social! WTF is that?
So go ahead, sit on the fence, wait till its finished, and if the game does not get its funding and some publisher says "well hey you guys had the chance to support that game to show us that you are worthy to make games for, but you didn't, so obviously you are all talk and no action"
You will not be able to respond to them with anything but a "Well yeah you are right"
Stop talking and start doing twenty dollars is not going to bankrupt you!
Take my word for it, these niche mmorpgs are going to be the future of mmoRPGS on the PC!
But go right ahead and do nothing, wish, hope, dance, pray, chant that someone else will make this type of game and it will be succesful
But know that you have no right to say a word when publishers continue to give us fast food mmorpgs, because you didn't do anything to support the real mmo's.
This game represents the bigger picture, why is it so hard to see?
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

I really don't see any particularly unique features. What am I missing?

Its about back to basics, back to what made the genre great. Does an mmo have to be innovative for us to play it? Don't forget a group oriented mmorpg in todays environment IS unique nowadays.
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
Rise of the Fallen may be an awful name. But isn't Everquest even worse?
Maybe the name won't matter if the game is fun. Also, if it's group-oriented, the community will likely be much better than what we find in most games now.
The class design sounds very themeparkish so far. Also Brad has pretty much hopped from project to project with no positive results ever since Vanguard so I'm not entirely sure why he's qualified to lead another project all of a sudden.

Uh last I remember EQ was a themepark, just a better one than most out on the market today.
Not to mention I'd rather support another game like this instead of buying another quest hubber.
