It wasn't very smart by SOE to add the prefix "Everquest Next" to Landmark. Should have just named it Landmark or something else. You can create content for any MMO with it anyway, there is nothing Everquest specific in Landmark.
Now they caused confusion on the customer side. Never a good idea.
They included the name Everquest in it for the brand recognition and to get more people to jump into it. The truth is that it is more like space engineers in a terrestrial setting.
Personally, I like the direction they are taking with EQN and EQN Landmark. The part that gets in the way of the vision is the likely F2P business model and cash shop that will be strapped onto both titles after the launch. After what has gone down with Planetside 2 and it's game balancing, it's hard to be a willing backer to a game published under Sony Online Entertainment.
You dont BUY anything excet access to the beta and whatver goodies they give you. Its a free to play game. Now if what you get NOW correlates to the release of EQ NEXT proper I would say the answer is NO.
BUT when that game is ready for release you dont HAVE to buy anything then either. Unless you want early access to it. Be it the same way they did this one or a more 'conventional' beta.
Not defending or condemning SOE here just pointing out you dont have to pay for anything, you dont even have to pay to get into Alpha you could try the lottery r however they have it and just apply and hope you get chosen. You will go in naked basically I doubt you would even get a claim flag so unless that mechanic is in the game youd be running around, exploring and collecting stuff to use when they add that function in.
Basically SOE is bypassing the whole 'kickstarter' phase. And jumping into whatever those guys call it when they let people who donated a certain amount play/test/experience what they have. Good or bad people can make their own determination.
"Paying" 20,60, or 100 bux for a 'free game' that isnt even released doesnt really make sense to me. But neither does sending 250 bucks or more to some kicksterter that doesnt have an office just in case they do make a game worth playing. But that is the age we live in, it also shows the desperation of people who will do ANYTHING to find an MMO they can call 'home'.
They are letting people access Landmark early so as to help shape the final product we will all get to play later on. At least, that is the philosophy they have been presenting as to why they are having a backers program and giving those backers early access to the alpha build.

I agree with you that Landmark is a better name
but there is a section of Landmark that will be devoted to Norrath
Landmark will feature many common MMO functions. You'll be able to start guilds and make friends, along with creating temporary build projects with others. You can also gather resources, craft items (including better gathering tools), and man an in-game booth to sell stuff to other Landmark adventurers. You can even sell your real estate on the global marketplace or make a career out of crafting environmental items for other players to use.
One area of Landmark will be reserved for art in the Norrathian style. Players can use the game's tagging system to "like" content, and the most-liked content (that fits the art style) will show up in EverQuest Next proper on day one of its launch.
