I have played GW2 over 1 year now and WvW is all about zerging and AOE damage.
This statement is false and has been proven wrong with many Youtube videos of organized smaller groups destroying larger ones while other groups take the map.
Only those with a hive mind mentality zerg, because they see it and think they must join.
I can guarantee you that in TESO, PvP guilds will form massive groups and force others to do the same to defeat them. Much like in DaoC only worse because guilds have had 14 more years of gaining experience and tactics in MMO PvP. This will give the impression of "zerging".
OP, it is never too late to join an MMO unless its on its last legs with a very low population. I personally only played GW2 for a few months, it wasn't my type of game, but I have a lot of guildmates that play it and are having a blast. If you had fun, get it. Its not a subscription game so youll only be paying for the box so even if you only get a months worth of play out of it, its worth the low price and you can go back to it any time you want do to no sub to access.

I won't take sides once again in the "TESO vs GW2" war, so I will just say one thing.
GW2 is a game where it's NEVER too late to start, simply because it's not about end game gear grinding which gives you 5 tiers advantage over the new players.
So no, it's not to late to start with GW2.

Oh yes, I almost laugh-spit my beer on my screen when I read that. It's the usual "the game I'm playing makes me a better person than you" nonsense. ESO is a "carebear" style theme park, just like GW2, and like WAR, and like DAoC... you can level in 100% safety until you're max level, without ever engaging PvP. That's the opposite of anything hardcore.
Actually, quite amusingly, the PvP servers in games like WoW are more "hardcore" than those "RvR / WvW" games.
Id go TESO & here's why. If you were a pve type player it would be a close call. GW2 PVE Leveling exp is awesome, im not gonna lie, They have this great world and fun quests . But since you stated stated pvp is your focus and GW2 PVP is zerg fest trash I would say go TESO.
Plus ESO is the new kid on the block and servers are going to be jam packed, Its always fun jumping in on a new release when everything is fresh and new for ALL players with a sense of mystery, This one is a no brainer go Elder Scrolls
Guild Wars 2 is never too late to start thanks to the speedy leveling and level scaling. I got bored with GW2 after about 6 months, but I feel like I got my money's worth. And that's all that really matter. It's worth playing for it's unique experience.
If your torn, then I would say GW2 is your best bet. ESO seems to have alot of baggage and there is alot of hate, fan boisms, and love for the game all going on right now, it's really hard to tell what ESO even is.
GW2 on the other hand.... Everyone knows what it is already. I can tell you there is alot to do, the combat could use some help imo, but some like it and some don't, it also has the best buisness model of all mmorpg's and that is buy to play. If it turns out you really don't like GW2 you are really not out all that much.
I own GW2 as I hinted at and even though wvwvw is thier selling point, the Spvp is the bright spot in the game for me and the nice thing is you can play as all of the classes and it scales you up and gives you gear and weapons, so you can log in from day one and jump right into spvp and be competitive.
ESO leaves alot on the table still even with NDA lifted, there are alot of mixed reviews, it feels like people are tip toeing around reviewing ESO because no one likes negativity and just from reading the various posts, you kind of get the vibe the character animations are going to make you feel like your pvping with paper cutouts all over your screen.

Where is GW2 Free?
Every time I look it is $49.
I would play it if it was reasonably priced. But there is no way I am dropping $50 on a game that only takes a week to get to max level. $20 maybe.
A week? Really, I had 2 lvl 80s in a week in GW2 but I wasn't really speed playing.
But there are guides to get to level 80 in 3 hours.
Even booking and ignoring everything in ESO you get to max level of 50 in 65 game hours. I would go ESO if you don't like the super fast leveling to endgame thing.
The next ESO beta weekend will probably be in a weeks time. Keys were really plentiful for the last one, I doubt it will be any different the next time around.
Why rely on the opinion of others ? Grab a beta key and try ESO for yourself.
I believe that GW2 will be the better choice over the long term. It's obvious that a lot of people are hyped about ESO but let's be honest, we won't know what kind of longevity ESO's PvE and PvP will have until at least a month or two after launch.
Considering that GW2 has managed to maintain a very healthy player base for well over year now, it's clear that this game is doing a lot of things right.
We're also seeing a fairly steady stream of improvements to WvW based on player feedback so I would expect it to continue to get better over time.
All the same references to 'epic DAoC RvR' were made about GW2 prior to its launch just like we're seeing with ESO. Only time will tell whether or not Zenimax has actually put together a solid PvP end-game worth $15 a month.
My guess is that ESO will make some improvements to GW2's WvW system but the $15 sub and lack of any other PvP content will become an issue shortly after launch. Not to mention the fact that you'll most likely spend more time walking / running than actually fighting in Cyrodiil.
Guildwars 2 is more or less dead when it comes to low to mid level content.
Even outside of prime time you wont find any action in WvW and that on Seafarers Rest one of the biggest EU servers. It cant compete with the overall quality of the pve & pvp content in comparison to TESO in my opinion. Thats a different league.

GW2 is the safer choice. You can level up fairly quickly in GW2, it's an enjoyable experience, and the max level stuff in GW2 is far less vertical than other games. As it stands, TESO is shaping up to be the next TORtanic.
What, because you don't like it? Your crystal ball is shining bright i see;)

Because your focus is like mine....faction conflict....the answer is easy for me to give. Hands down ESO is THE ONE. DAOC is the gold standard for faction conflict. Matt Firror one of its creators is directing the building of ESO. From my limited exposure to ESO AvA...it could be the next leap forward from the original DAOC. and here is teh deal the cyrodil works like the W3 on GW2, its instanced, don't have anything else to do, and since only way for you go to another faction is being lvl 50(from what I heard) everything you wanted from DAoC, is not on eso, sorry you will still need to keep looking.

If I have an hour to enjoy some gaming after work, the last thing I'm gonna want to do is play a game that forces me to walk 10-15 minutes in hopes of seeing some PvP.
Bigger isn't always better and harsh punishments for dying do not make a game any better, if anything it makes less people want to play.

If death is meaningless and everyone is back in the PvP fight half a minute after dying/getting wiped, then any epicness or strategy flies out the window and you can just lemmingzerg down any target. Somehow I have the feeling you wouldn't enjoy that either. I sure wouldn't.
15 minutes (I agree that would be too long) is also not realistic, unless they would go totally vanilla DAoC style with long portal ceremonies and 0 porting in frontiers/PvP areas (but, as far as I know they said you can port between own connected keeps.. so...).
Let's hope downtime will be somewhere in the middle and make sense game design wise.
Originally posted by Lobotomist As for RVR. They are almost the same. ESO is largely copying GW2. So they managed to improve it a bit.
What a bunch of complete bull crap.
GW2 tried to copy DAoC, which has always been the Gold Standard of RvR style PvP, and while GW2 rolled it out, the missed the essence of DAoC to the point that it plays like a hollow copy that someone really did not understand. Shifting battles, not knowing who your enemies really are, not a huge sense of realm pride. Pretty graphics that often caused lag and latency issues for people at launch, the game was not optimized for large scale PvP. Battles and skills that favored zerg PvP, with few checks to either prevent that, or to make small groups feel as useful.
Mind you, I'm not knocking GW2, it was a very fun PvE experience, it looked great, did a lot of fun things in PvE, and I really enjoyed my time with it, but PvP masterpiece like DAoC it is not, it's a laughable comparison.
ESO on the other hand appears to be built around the idea of RvR. The reports are hugely favorable that the game runs smoothly with 200 people on screen. No mass rez skills that make death a little more meaningful, and help give a little more value to small groups. (Still ton's of zerg's, but a few more opportunities to enjoy smaller group PvP.) Campaigns that allow you to see and get to know your enemies, and build some rivalries, and some realm pride (probably not to the level of DAoC).
So what's the downside? The first 10 levels are not that great. Animations pale in comparison to other games. Melee combat is not all that satisfying. So there are definitely warts there, so it's a question of what someone prefers. The hollow RvR copy that GW2 swings for and misses, or the model that DAoC innovated, and parts of the dev team that are now at Zenimax are working to re-create.
Best answer is to sign up for the ESO beta, and try it one of the beta weekends, slog thru the first 10 levels, and try the RvR and decide which you enjoy more. 10 Levels of one, and a preview of GW2 oughta give the OP a reasonable idea of what they like.
I've played GW2 for a weekend trial and liked it, didn't get far, but I liked it.

Think I'm leaning towards pre-purchasing TESO at the moment...
Fans of GW says buy GW, fans of ESO says buy ESO. Haters of either game will say buy the other. What I would do if I were in your shoes and liked the GW2 free weekend, buy GW2 and play it until ESO comes, then play ESO and at that point you propably can make a decision which game you like more and stick with it.
judging from the large percentage of people saying they are going to skip ESO, I would be inclined to wait for the F2P conversion instead of suffering buyers remorse for paying the box and subbing for six months to ESO just to see it F2P after.
However, games like ESO need their funding, so if you are interested in playing anyhow then go for it. After all, smashing Faberge eggs into your forehead, though fun, can cost thousands if not millions. So throwing a couple hundred dollars at a game that goes F2P doesn't seem so bad. (If it goes F2P of course)

Pretty much this. You already know you like GW2, so at least you won't choose bad if you pick that. Maybe ESO will have another beta test or two you can get into before it's launch so you can get some hands on with it as well.
Now here comes my opinion: If you are looking for an Elder Scrolls game then I would recommend Skyrim. To me ESO is just a watered down version of Skyrim, so it's not even worth the box price, much less a monthly sub on top of that.

GW2 you can always continue at your own pace since there are no subs and it takes like 1 week's worth of time for 1-80. Pick a decent server and pvp during ESO maintenance guuuuu!
I'm going with ESO, but my main reason for not going with GW2 is because I already missed too much of the living story. In on the ground floor with ESO

I consider ESO superior to GW2 because:
ESO has similar large scale type of pvp
PVE in ESO is so much better than GW2 it's not even comparable
I still encourage to buy GW2 though. It's B2P so you can still get back to GW2 whenever you like. Many GW2 players come and go.

I think the pve stinks in both games.

Wut... Would you recommed me Skyrim if I wanted to explore some Redguard cities and lands? What about Breton? If I wanted to PvP in Cyrodiil? If I wanted to run into other players in Elderscrolls world? Come on... The guy even said he's looking for RvR style PvP.
Get both GW2 goes on sale often!
GW2 you can always continue at your own pace since there are no subs and it takes like 1 week's worth of time for 1-80. Pick a decent server and pvp during ESO maintenance guuuuu!
Pros: cooler dance moves, zerg wvw/avava
Cons: no progression, all cosmetics
