Good for ZO. Seems they have taken the criticisms about their starting experience to heart and made changes. I'm still not planning to buy, but I have a lot of respect for a company who is willing to listen to feedback.

I didn't take part in any beta, but I've already pre-ordered the game. I like starter and tutorial aeras in all kind of games (I also like to read game manuals), so I'm sure I will play trough it when the game launches. I just hope that they don't remove those zones completely. I have nothing against option to skip those zones, of course.
Adding collision detection (if only in PvE) on the other hand, is a great news.
Collision detection (CS) is HUGE for pvp - it means that tanks can still do their job. High hit point toons can effectively block a doorway, with healers behind supporting, making it harder for a zerg to just immediately penetrate. That's just one example. Tanks can get in the way of a DPS train as well - that's pretty huge - saving healers, etc.
CD adds an entirely new and realistic element to pvp strategy.
CD also affects performance.
ZOS has a choice. Massive 1000ish player battles with no CD, or 50ish player skirmishes. (numbers are made up)
ZOS seems to have chosen massive battles over CD. Maybe one day someone will create tech where CD can be server side and not affect performance. I don't think we are there yet.
I'm pretty much certain this is why they want to introduce it for NPCs first - to check it out how exactly it impacts infrastructure and work towards more stuff step by step.
Though I'm all for options, I WILL NOT be skipping the Starter Islands. I want those skill points, resources, chests, etc and it wasn't as boring to me as it is to the previewers and others here..just not as open as later levels. I'm curious to know what happens when you leave them and everything else is much higher level. They should bump your level up if you skip it and allow you to assign unused skill points you would have gained naturally through leveling. You'll just miss the points on the starter island from the skyshards.
You can always come back if you opt to skip. Personally I don't mind the starting areas. I'll be playing them through. I suppose if I get to my 4th character in the same faction then....maybe.
At that point though you can more or less sail through and just focus on the 'big fun' stuff like the achievements.
I wish they had made the 'skip' feature optional after 1 complete run through on at least 1 character but so be it. Apparently people wanted it and I'm glad the devs listened. Does no harm to those of us who intend to run the gauntlet and makes more players happy out of the gate.
Well it was either make starting island more "fun" or make an option for those that want to skip it.
They went the easier route considering it's not that far from launch day.
Have you ever really been on a "fun" starter island? If you are a typical jaded MMO player there isn't much they can do to improve them.
I suspect the level 10 cap to join RVR was partially to encourage people to stick it out until then when the game starts to open up more.
Well eventough this isn't exactly comparable to a real elder scrolls game one would assume they'd be free to roam when you get out of the "prison" part but nope you need to complete the story quest to get out of the smalish map.
Originally posted by skyline385 Another important point is that Collision Detection just got put in. I think that's a big deal.
Great news about the Collision Detection! The starter areas were painful, good to see they are listening to feedback. I may have to get this game yet. Regardless, I'm just happy that they are listening. They added the first person view as well. Seems like a very approachable group of devs. This alone may make me buy this game.
Edit: Just read they haven't added it to PvP yet....ugh. I was so excited.
Collision Detection in PvE is going to suck .. there are enough dickheads jumping around trying to hit you with the sword/axe etc when they know they can't and now they will be able to eternally bump you to piss you off.
Reminds me of when your mining in EVE and someone will come and bump your ship trying to get you to attack or just get on your nerves.

There's no collision between players. Only between players and NPCs.
So, I have played a character to max level, but I want to make another one now. Why do I have top play the whole game again, just give me one! I don't need to learn to play this dude, I have all that covered on my main, I just want another look and race combo.

Feels more like ES without the tutorial islands, IMO.
I mean, Skyrim and Oblivion you had the typical "escape from prison/execution" segments, and then you could follow the main quest or just go out and starting doing ES type stuff.
Now, in ESO, you have the prison escape then you can follow main quest or go out and start doing ES type stuff.
It's a big win, IMO.
CD and animation feedback for melee and such will hopefully make a big boost to the combat feeling more involved and visceral.
Likely more an issue about increasing player desire for making alts.
The collision detection is an amazing addition to pvp if they can pull it off. To me that is the biggest news.
They haven't added it to pvp.
Ya I read that over the weekend with the leaked patch notes. I just jumped the gun thinking how amazing it would be for pvp. Looks like it's just for immersion purposes with NPCs. Nice step either way as their focus is to try bring the first person feel to TESO. Hopefully better chat and group friendliness with the phase system can be enhanced too. I feel those areas are where the game is weakest.
Nice to see some tweaks to melee combat feel. Can hardly wait to test it next beta as I'll be hitting 15 with training 1-hand + shield and using melee for the very first time.
Do note it won't be in your best interest to skip the "starter island".

It's an MMO and people will behave like they always do.
Everyone will skip the tutorial (because tutorials are for "n00bs") and then spend the next 2 days spamming stupid questions in chat (in all caps, of course)...
Sounds good, but I'd rather they simply improve it and make it... not boring. Once you go through a tutorial type situation once it's a good idea to have the option to skip it on any new character. But why even leave the island in if it's so boring nobody wants to play it?
Instead of directly porting a player from Coldharbor to the city, they should have a pop-up window that asks us where we want to go before we port out. I foresee new players missing the starter island because they didn't know it was there.

Whenever EVE releases new versions I run a new toon through it's starter missions to see if there are any changes, SOOO many moan about them, I find them fun. Starter Island i'll probably run each time I make a new toon (I'll probably have one of each base class lol)

In the last 3 betas I saw people spamming stupid (well generally unnecessary if you paid attention) questions all the live long day. Will happen whether people skip or not.
Lord knows how many times I explained about the 'Green Lady and the warehouse on stilts in the SW part of town. And people would immediately ask again...how do I find....

May be optional so that more of the later / higher level content gets tested.
Until Z say otherwise I would assume no change to the final game. There may be a change but .....
