Morrowind, for me. Skyrim is a great game, technically superior to its predecessors and I love it. It was everything I was expecting it to be. I had no expectations when I picked up Morrowind, so it had far more impact on me. And yeah, that music - bleak, haunting, triumphant and beautiful. Totally unforgettable.
Skyrim was aceptable to play for some time, all the rest ... could not force myself to play past 2 or 3 weeks. Empty worlds of nothing, same epic fights with rats at any level and area. Have hopes for TESTO except for insane limitation for active toolbars.
Used to be Morrowind for me, Even after I played Skyrim for a while already. But when I started to install mods for Skyrim, I have to say Skyrim. The quality of mods for Skyrim is a lot higher then it was for Morrowind. And they can expand the base game so much more.
Only thing I still miss from Morrowind is the game's atmosphere.
Ahh Morrowind... It is impossible to describe the feeling of playing that game when it first released. The music, the graphics (at the time), the exploration, the characters, the total freedom. Did I mention that beautiful music score?
I sunk countless hours into this game exploring every nook and cranny I could, poring over my physical game box map for new places to go. This was gaming nirvana for a lot of folks at the time. For me it's the greatest.
This! I spend hours around Seyda Neen when i exit from tavern and see sunset almost cried music atmosphere was stunning for first time experience.

I vote Skyrim bcs it is the most "worldly" game, Morrowind allways reminds me on a 3D-Stage, though its possibly the better RPG.
The combat and UI is crap in every TES game since Morrowind (i did not play the older Elder Scrolls games), i play and like them despite that.

So what you are saying is that the game the developers actually created is better in Morrowind, but the game developed by the community is better in Skyrim?

lol, my friend did that and I had to create a mod to put the item back where it originally was.
I still have Daggerfall on my computer. I think now that I've gone through this thread I'll make another attempt to go through it.
edit: lol, still in the first dungeon and being one shot a lot.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

The music was wonderful. I also like the artwork, it's consistent through the expansions.
Spent so much time just doing my adventures in that game (Deus Ex style), that Morrowind is still my favorite in the series. Still have the Morrowind map on my door all these years, too.
Too bad ESO has PvP in it. Killed my interest in it at the very start.
Skyrim nailed fantasy genre so well there is nothing else to do.
Time to move on to other time periods now the perfect fantasy RPG has been created.
I have to ask, when did you start gaming? Skyrim the perfect fantasy RPG? What about Baldur's Gate 2? Planescape: Torment? Might & Magic: Clouds of Xeen? Might & Magic 7? Ultima 7?
And I'm not knocking Skyrim, but let's not exaggerate how good of an RPG it is just because modern graphics are shinier and let them add cool looking dragons.

Daggerfall is best, anyone who says different is simply jumping on the band wagon, and too young to recall good games.

They were all fantastic, played the hell outta all of em (except oblivion, can't explain it, but it just never caught me). I voted for Daggerfall simply for the fact that I am old, and even back then I thought that was by far the most ambitious game world out there.
I don't pretend to know which one is best, but I'm playing through Morrowind again on my old Xbox original and enjoying it, 11 years after release.

What I am mainly saying is that I find it very very important if a game is moddable This is why I see Minecraft as my favourite game atm. Not because of vanilla Minecraft, which I found boring quite fast, but because what you can do with mods. It is still Minecraft. Same goes for Skyrim. Bethesda let people mod their game, which for me is one of the most important features.
Skyrim. Has the best combat system in the series, had fun and memorable characters, did a great job of immersing you in the world, and has some of the best mod support of any game to date.
As much as I loved Morrowind... I just can't go back. The combat is awful, almost all the characters have zero personality, the world itself feels static, and quite frankly the game's depth is actually quite shallow and can easily fall apart if you scratch the surface. (I.E. If you become the head of the temple, and then declare yourself the Nerevarine, no one reacts, and you have to go talk to your former master to get the temple's blessing... yeah.)

With mods its still Oblivion but Skyrim is catching up with it quick.

actually I take that back. If they took Skyrim and Darkfall and put it into a good blender it would be the perfect fantasy game

I voted Arena because at the time it was the first seemingly open world really do anything you want fantasy crpg.
Morrowind though is the real breakout game of the series.
