I honestly dont see what this thread is even about. Its exactly what they have told us from the beginning. There will be dungeon and raid gear, but for it to be the "best in game" or "best in slot" it has to be reworked by a crafter.
So technically yes, dropped gear is best, but only if a crafter improves it. Dropped gear the way it drops IS NOT the best gear in the game. This is exactly what ZOS has said from the very start, that even raid gear will need to be improved upon by a crafter. So if this has never changed, why is it all of a sudden a big deal, when it wasnt when we knew all this information months ago?

You can't compare a shallow crafting system in ESO to one of the best crafting systems ever - SWG.
Let alone a themepark based game vs a sandboxy game.
C'mon, apples and oranges.
Sorry dude, just lost credibility when you state ESO crafting is shallow. By making that statement, I'm not sure you tried the crafting for any length of time. I admit I never played SWG, so I can't compare the two styles. However, I did ESO crafting for two full beta periods and was impressed with the level of complexity. You can't just sit down and craft whatever you decide to make without researching traits, tempers, materials, styles, etc. The crafting system in this game will take many many hours to master. Your criticism, in this instance, seems uninformed.
Just because it takes hours to research does not make the crafting deep and complex, just time consuming.
Ding ding ding!
To Grym - I lost credibility but you admit you never played SWG hence you don't understand how shallow ESOs crafting is in comparison.
Hehe, dude its shallow, because 99% of all MMOs crafting is shallow in comparison, ESO is no different.
Get it?
SWG was such a great game they had to shut it down because people wouldn't stop playing it.
Where your feeble retort fails is that you are not understanding a crafting system and game being two separate issues.
Also SWG the game failing (for reasons that are irrelevant to this discussion) does not invalidate the crafting system being superior to most other MMORPGs crafting systems to date.
"superior" is a relative term for sure but clearly the marketplace does not agree with your assessment. I'm not a fan of fast food as I find small family run businesses to be "superior" in almost every way except speed and consistency which isn't a huge issue for me. Still the marketplace clearly prefers fast-food as there are 10 times more of those kinds of restaurants and hence customers than family run restaurants around.

A failing company can have one product that is amazing.
A failed game can have one system that is amazing.
Just because a game shuts down does NOT mean that every single aspect of it sucked.
SWG had amazing crafting that is yet unmatched.
The fact that it shut down - it doesnt make its crafting system any less amazing.
So maybe now you might have some different thoughts?
Probably not.
The only thing particularly groundbreaking about crafting in SWG was the experimentation factor. Beyond that, I saw nothing else about the crafting to be considered "amazing."

Balancing crafted vs. dropped items is always going to be tricky and numbers are likely to be in flux on the run-up to launch. And even with crafted items having a major role, dropped gear should still be useful. With the variety of builds available in ESO, it's certainly possible dropped gear may be better for certain builds, while other builds may make better use of the flexibility provided by crafting.
But remember this is the company that removed Levitation from alchemy and enchanting in Oblivion, too. All for "balance", in an offline RPG. ^-^

What other games did that aside from SWG/UO?
I am pretty sure that ESO is allowing guilds to have a shop, which sort of parallels the house thing. Though, the house thing plays more into housing than crafting. If the game ever gets housing, I imagine that you'll be able to sell from it?
Beyond the selling from a house, which really falls into the arena of housing rather than crafting, the other stuff you've listed isn't particularly impressive.
IMO SWG was a little bit to crafter centric, which probably contributed to it's fall. The gear you got from actually playing the game was crap. If you didn't spend all of your time crafting or dealing with crafters, your equipment was going to suck. It possibly contributing to the failure of the game is probably why no one is too quick to copy it's crafting system.
I'm just sad to see that they are making you linear quest, no other viable alternatives....ugh. So linear questing required and crafting already taking hits. It is also odd to me that they don't have a combat log or really any numbers anywhere. Anyone know their reasoning for no info/combat log/anything?
I'm glad I saw this thread before I went and pre-ordered.
So TESO is like so many other MMOs out there now huh?
Scratch one more game off my To-Do list.
The game has a lot of betas. You'd probably get a better feel for the game if you joined one rather than some how using this thread to get an overall view of the game.
Unless you are a crafter, there isn't really much in this thread that gives a big picture view of the game.
If SWG is so awesome we should all go play it! It sounds like everyone loves everything about that game and here it is even part of one of the most beloved franchises ever...
/sarcasm off
Really, folks stop comparing anything to SWG, the game was so awesome it couldn't even keep enough people playing to convince the higher ups to keep it running. I tried it two or three times over the years and each time I thought it was a pretty empty and lifeless game. Lets try to keep whatever systems made people stop playing that game out of future games...
Unless you are a crafter, there isn't really much in this thread that gives a big picture view of the game.
If you played the franchise all these years, you already have the big picture...and know history is repeating itself, again.
Crafting has always been a hit or miss affair in TES, and it was the players and their mods that corrected the problems. With a MMO there is no other way to correct it but appeal. The heavy hand approach on content is going to be a sore point as the novelty of a MMO TES wears off. The beauty of TES has always been the modding community that kept the series alive and kicking.

Hi, I don't think you really paid attention to what you were responding to. A guy basically said that he used the information in this thread to decide whether to play the game or not. I simply noted that this thread is focused on a specific topic and doesn't really have a lot of other details on the game.
Given that the game is freely open to play every other weekend or so up until launch, it might be a good idea to actually play it rather than making assumptions.
I'm glad I saw this thread before I went and pre-ordered.

It's about the crafting.
I thought FF14 ARR was supposed to be HUGE on crafting. It had classes dedicated to crafting that were as equally painstaking to level (Harder actually) than the combat classes. Then when they released the 2nd raid, crafting was left out.
I went into a game believing there was finally an MMO that would keep crafting on par with PVE. It didn't.
I almost went into TESO with the same hope. I'm just glad I know now.
And as you can imagine, a beta weekend isn't going to show me what I'm looking for.
Learn how to read. Also, it helps to understand how crafting works in ESO. You gain enchantments just like you do in skyrim, form drops. Either way, it says, crafted gear is better. So again, learn how to read.
I'm glad I saw this thread before I went and pre-ordered.

Oh, well yeh, if crafting is a big enough deal to you that you can base your entire decision on whether to play the game on some beta change, then yeh TESO probably isn't for you.
I do think it is better to go and play the game and find out for yourself though. I never really take the word of others on that sort of thing if I have the ability to freely find out for myself.
Given that the game is freely open to play every other weekend or so up until launch, it might be a good idea to actually play it rather than making assumptions.
I won't set foot in ESO, it has PvP. That's like adding machinery in the Shire and then claim Tolkien approved of it. That's like making J. C. Denton into Justin Bieber. That's like making the Pope into the Flying Nun.
I'm glad I saw this thread before I went and pre-ordered.

You would probably be very surprised at just how big the Crafting community is, or how passionate they can be about their chosen 'vocations' So don't be too surprised if the whole crafting issue vs loot doesn't become a huge as in deal breaking factor in whether people choose to play the game or not, or for how long they stay with the game for that matter.

Thanks for the laugh...claiming to not play a game without ever trying it out solely on one aspect of OPTIONAL playstyle is amusing, particularly when you've never tried the betas and know absolutely nothing about the game other than the dribble you read on message boards...
What are you talking about? What reliable information?
You do not trust developers statement, but you trust some GoldenTiger, one of hundreds of closed beta testers.
It is just silly. You have no knowledge how reliable his information ever was except for comparison it with developers information. And now you intentionally ignore developers statement in favor of this nobody. Is he your brother?
I would say you have an agenda!
P.S. By the way, I trust in God! In god only. Don't you?
There are some serious issues being raised right now in TESO. The problem is that ZOS is blatantly ignoring its closed tester community and drastically changing the game for the worse, just 2 weeks before release. They have TONS of interest in the game as it is right now, and are basically using these final two weeks to go off the handle, and destroy what theyve previously told us is the "core of their game"
That "core" is trying to make TESO feel like a world, and not a linear "on rails" experience. Yes, there is a story and quests to follow, but prior to this, they have repeated hundreds of times that " you dont need to be stuck doing any one thing in order to progress your character" NOW, in the final days, it seems like ZOS is throwing us the middle finger and shutting off its communications, all the while regressing its game into a hardcore linear quest grind. These maybe kneejerk reactions bc TESO was up until now, a very differently progressing game than anything weve had in the past 8 years. THATS A GOOD THING!!
The statements below are examples of the things we find that are changing in the world as we speak. In some forums, people are asking why we should trust the players and not what the devs say. Its because the devs are choosing to release statements such as these in red. They are ambiguous and misinformative. We NEED ZOS to understand and listen to its closed beta PTS testers, not to the wildstar and WOW trolls that get invites to STRESS TEST weekends.
Dev: Slightly tweaked xp gains from killing mobs in order to prevent some forms of power leveling.
Beta Tester: Holy shit, we used to kill a mob and each get 120 xp at lvl 15, now we kill a mob in duo queue and each get 45. This isnt just a slight tweak, this has removed the viability of grinding mobs for xp and has forced us to play the boring linear waste of time quests.
Dev: Crafters are going to be really special and needed in TESO bc only crafters can upgrade the purple dropped loot.
Beta Tester: Yes, Legendary upgrade for dropped loot is better.. it raises the weapon dmg slightly on the weapon, and it raises the armor value slightly on the weapon. The TRUE problem is that aside from putting points into extraction and hireling, YOU DONT NEED TO CRAFT ANYTHING. Crafting skill should be renamed into "upgrading skill" ANY crafter of ANY level can upgrade a VR10 purple into a Legendary, You dont need crafter skill, just the crafter mats. ANYTHING actually CRAFTED is FAR FAR worse than Basic purple drops. Crafting is now moot and should be renamed to Upgrading.
So yes, after seeing the quality of information coming out of ZOS and comparing it to the detailed, numbers driven, FEEDBACK that testers are giving, EVERYONE should be listening to the testers as opposed to the DEVS. Remember, the devs are trying to sell a game and make MONEY. The testers are volunteering their time to play a toon that is going to be deleted, just in order to allow for their feedback to be noted and implemented.
Given that the game is freely open to play every other weekend or so up until launch, it might be a good idea to actually play it rather than making assumptions.

I like that XP has dropped across the board .... sweet ... takes longer to level...
I like that crafters all still needed to 'improve' drops.....
'improving' drops needs temper thingies..... temper thingies only do X% per temper ...
tempers are a pain to get....
crafters spend points to improve the temper drop rate and the temper X% per temper to improve items success.....
joe-blow fighter dude wont wish to spend his/her hard earned points into crafting.....
I will ...... I will be the only route to the best gear in the game .... as a ...
Crafter ....
yay Me !
Maybe some people just prefer fighting AI..
