I was thinking Malazan, rule of scepters and uniqueness. The failure of open/themepark PvP in various games War and GW2 being the most recent. By failure I mean the basic problem of merry go rounds, rep grinding in themepark PvP and the hardcore nature of sandbox PvP.
I like the comment, the simple put a sword in a stone, in the middle of the capital city. A capturable object that only one person can hold and it is bound to that player until death. The power is in the sword not the player or the guild.
The emperor/empress is crowned after 3 months, whoever is holding the sword at that point, when the campaign has been won for the realm by the people who fight.
I just love the idea a non PvP'er stepping into the arena for the first time could become Emperor/Emperess. A time limited player could do the same and cash, gold ect ect means nothing.
clearly theres a few problems involved, the usual loot problem of PvE dungeons where there is only 1 drop and 40 people on the raid. But surely a guild is about cooperation and being the ruler of a realm is more than Joffrey.
I also love the fact the guild politics involved the almost certain vendettas to be created when one guild betrays another on the same side to steal the sword, the 1 ring to rule them all, while winning for the realm. The possibility of the random making it a true game of thrones.
I suppose you could go for the berserker staff episode, a sword split in 3 parts, you can only be crowned emperor if you hold all 3 parts.
problem with that is it removes the random and guarantees the continued ruling of the ruling class. ie those with cash in a P2P game, those with huge amounts of time in a rep grind game.
Personally i'm more interested in putting someone on a throne. Though I might grab the sword if I got the chance, with certainty if another realm was going to get it. I would probably pass it on at the end of a 3 month campaign. The thought of PvP for 3 months where the only player symbol on the map is "the sword is here come kill".
