He's been doing this for awhile and so far he has been pretty accurate. Actually when he is incorrect it usually is because some company didn't release the right numbers for whatever game. Most of his info is pretty trust-worthy. It's always interesting to check his site with every new update to see what has changed in the last few months.
doesnt appear that SWG's numbers have been updated. They've been around 250k subscribers for a while and no way thats still the case. The servers are all light loads with the exception of Bria during peak hrs. They must be under 200k at least after the disaster called CU.
If you care to have a look at the news, he says that he updated only NCSoft games, because they released some figures at E3. He will try to add some more updates for other games, if more info will be available during the E3. Probably NCSoft has not released the numbers for GW, or maybe he didn't included it, because GW has no monthly fee.
GW just came out so he woud not have much data for it yet.
I think he been fairly accurate over the years and the numbers seems right.
SWG had at one time offically announced 400k accounts. And sir bruce did announce this numbers a few weeks before SoE did even showing he does use inside information .Not sure if he kept int in graph form at any point but he did post it.
Not unusual to see out of the top 4 games only one is a non asian made game which is WoW at number 3.
As stated above, I don't think Guild Wars will ever be listed there because there are no subscribers and there wouldn't be a way to calculate market share except for sales of the game itself.
Wow, very neat site, first time I see it, what I a noob I am...
Biggest surprises for me...
- that SWG actually has 3% marketshare, how in the world have they managed to hang on to that much, I guess all the lies and hold on's they've used have worked.
- That lineage 1 and 2 are so big, I remember playing Lineage 1 years ago, I guess it was actually my first MMO (go figure) and havn't bothered trying out Lineage 2, nice to see they both have such a great following though. Working on the fact that the site is accurate that is.
- That COH has such a small marketshare, I played it for a bit and had a lovely time, but got really dull after some time, heh guess I'm not all that surprised after all...
The least bit surprised by...
Way to many Sci-Fi and Fantasy Games... Gimme something new, story driven Horror/Goth MMO just for me
My guess on SoR is lack of data... He'd probably have put it there otherwise.
L1 and L2 are the two most popular games in the world - but most of their players are in Asia. I gather L1's numbers were hard to figure, too, because at the time most players played at internet cafes, paying by the hour instead of a monthly subscription; that's changed some, but still skews numbers a bit I guess.
SWG is apparently still doing OK. But then, so are a lot of other games that one might wonder "why?" about... Don't forget that SOE still has an INCREDIBLE newbie hose just with the Star Wars name. For example, even when EQ1 was top dog in the US, the average player played EQ1 less months than any other major game. They had the highest turnover rate. When EQ1 had 500k players, it was actually LOSING over 80,000 players a month. It was just gaining newbies fast enough that you never saw that.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the people who quit EQ before WoW released were still newbies. By the time PoP came out most of the low-mid level zones were empty. That's really counterproductive for a game that forces most classes to group.
I don't have hard data on what levels most people quit EQ1, just on the churn rate... But EQ1 was out for SIX YEARS before WoW was released; I think that there were probably a wide variety of player experience levels quitting. The important point is that EQ1's avg player only plays the game for 6-8 months. So their churn at any given point has been about 1/8 to 1/6 their playerbase each month, roughly.

Lineage 1&2 aren't all that huge in the US, but they are GIGANTIC in Asia.
I agree with you about wanting a horror/goth game. A couple years ago there was a mmorpg in the works named "Priest", a korean game that I believe was based off a manga. It was a combination horror/Old West style of setting. Unfortunately, like so many others over the last couple years, it didn't progress very far as a project.

Actually if you look at the charts, SWG never broke 300k players. This is also backed up by SOE's last official word on subscribers in October 2003 when they announced them at 295k. I never saw any official announcement on 400k and the charts confirm this.
It's a pity with a site like mmogchart that SOE have chosen to obsfucate all figures related to games by lumping them all into a single system. The figures of the games become inaccurate. It can only have been done to satisfy a manager - they like figures across projects to be the same, and SOE have guarenteed that at least from a reporting point of view this will be the case. SWG certainly doesn't have the numbers reported by this report. In the excel chart I'm surprised by Horizons, which doesn't seem to have reported the number of subscribers for the last several months - maybe they don't want to scare the last remaining number out of the game.
Forum signatures are stupid and annoying. I've turned mine off.
I dont think there should be any doubt about the fact that GW will be included, after all its been at the top of the PC charts for 3 weeks and has only managed to push down WoW to 4th place. What this means is that lots of people who havent played these games before are flocking to the genre, albeit in a slightly different form. This is the kind of new data that these analysis guys EAT up with a spoon. My guess is that Arenanet will probably provide data on the number of active accounts, like the ones that have been logged into at least once in the last week or something.

Actually, if you read the EULA of Guild Wars, you will notice that there is a way to track subscriptions - with a credit, you can automatically purchase new chapters for Guild Wars via PlayNC. (The EULA also mentions the term subscribers). But it may not be as accurate since you it is not mandatory to purchase future chapters and you may choose which chapters to buy. But probably a reason why I think Guild Wars won't be listed is because the guy behind those charts does not think the game meets MMORPG standards.
