    Very sad news...

But it isn't all that surprising, considering how long they have been working on it and how little they showed of that progress over the years. They always said that they had a "specific vision" for the game and that they wouldn't settle for anything less. It appears that they finally decided that it wouldn't be possible to realise that "vision" given the current limits of technology.

But it also represents a strategic realignment of CCP in a sense, with a complete focus on the EVE universe and further developments in that sphere. And that can only be a good thing...

This should have never happened and i said it a long time ago.

CCP must be making tons of cash from Eve,it is a very cheap game to run. That cash flow SHOULD have been put back into Eve for several reasons.First of all the players deserve it,especially considering the shambles the game was released in as is still an unfinished product.

Then and this is my opinion of course but their management team SHOULD have realized that a finished Eve with all the content a mainstream audience would expect would have garnered more NEW players than WOD would have ever got.

That would result in an even bigger Eve player base, more profits because you don't start a new game with new staff and offices all over the world. It would also allow the game to become the game it SHOULD have been on day 1 of release and accepted by mainstream gamer's instead of just the niche crowd.

All in all it just further proves to me that CCP is a very incompetent developer.Does anyone aside form the CCP faithful , even follow or care about DUST?

CCP wasted multi millions of the gamer's money that should have went back into Eve,good job CCP not one correct decision.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

For all the praise CCP has gotten as being a model publisher, the failure of Dust514 and now the cancellation of WoD shows that the company is just a one trick pony, that trick being EVE. For that company to florish and expand they need to rely on something other than an eleven year old game. They have been incredibly lucky with EVE, for years it has been the only game of its type and the only sandbox game that "worked".

But there are other games on the horizon. Star Citizen, Elite as well as a number of other sanbox or sandpark MMOs that will directly compete with EVE. The fact is they have nothing in development and only a single revenue stream in EVE. Let's not ignore that fact that any attempt to expand the EVE universe outside the spaceship have all been met with hostility. All in all CCP finds itself in a very uncomfortable position.

They better sell the IP then.. Buying it and then stopping production on the MMO based on it... If they just sit on the IP now, it will make me hate them with all of my being until the end of time.

Yeah, sure, in the back of my mind I was afraid of this.  No news, little news, no news, etc.. But I had hope.

I always thought of a World of Darkness MMO as a very interesting idea bit I could never understand how they where going to somehow balance all the different Clans, Bloodlines powers and who knows what in the WOD universe (and lets face it the fans would have been awfully upset if not at least most of the core Vampire game had not been in the MMO). And then manage to put that in to a sandbox with PVP elements (i never saw anything that explained what they had in mind there).

I just think its highly possible that they realized that the whole project was simply undoable, and when I think about it and re reads some of the Vampire and Werewolf RPG stuff it seems like an impossible task.

oh crap this title was on top of my wishlist.

As i was saying when they presented the brief on WoD. It was a VERY ambitious project and i personally think they overreached by about a  mile. The social system they hinted was going to be very complex, and while it was built upon the null sec gameplay we see in Eve there is a big step between space-stations and a living city. Ofc i am pretty sure a economy brought to it´s knees and some massive mistakes done on Eve and the whole DUST thing did not really help i am not sure it would have come to completion even without that.

Now ofc the question is, will they sit on the license untilo they are in a position to make a new game or will they flip it for a quick fix?

This have been a good conversation

This is sad news indeed, WoD was the game that could have shown them to not be a one trick pony show. Dust was a stupid idea and they were told so...it's sad they are canning WoD because dust flopped.

Pretty sure when eve goes CCP is done with as they are showing they can't do anything else but eve.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

They should sell the IP to either a developer that actually cares about it, or to one big enough to have the money to follow through on development.  Their statement that this cancellation will allow them to focus on making EvE even better is only relevant to CCP fans who didn't care about WoD anyway, it offers no consolation to people who wanted a WoD game.

these are sad news cause from their little info they gave away it looked like an awesome game focusing on some aspects none wanted to touch ...

anyway those who followed that game knew, that this will come when CCP released their finance report for last year ...

CCP started to lose their way back in 2008 when they announced DUST 514 and WoD. The problems are continuing with Valkyrie, in my opinion.

CCP should have stuck with Eve Online and transformed this game into a complete sci-fi universe - including Walking in Stations and much much more.

I have cancelled both my Eve Online subscriptions - I'll be transferring to Elite: Dangerous who are continuing with the original vision.

YeY who needs this anyway when we can play billions of fantasy mmos that are the same shit over and over again.

The only really different MMO that has come out in ages is TSW.

And now there wont be anything else on the horizon... the only thing was WoD

    The mmo genre is DEAD

Yes.  Everyone playing all MMOs everywhere might as well stop right now because the genre is dead.  Dead I tell you!

If anyone has read ex-CCP employee testimonials on Glass Door, this latest WoD cancellation is just the latest example of the dysfunctional corporate culture at CCP.

In short, they describe a culture of nepotism and cronyism where "bling" projects are pushed through by the person or clique currently in power/favor.  This combined with then a pattern of listening to their own echo chamber of fawning praise and either ignoring or smashing down negative feedback, means they get insulated from constructive criticism which is how the fiasco of Dust 514 got made despite all the warnings about it being a bad idea.  If this clique falls from power before the project completion we get cancellation like WoD and then a new shiny project to chase after a new clique pushes its agenda.  If they don't, after an interminable period of being a black hole for money and resources, they push through a badly put together mess like Dust 514.

Then when things fall apart, the clique falls from power, some sacrificial employee heads roll, and the whole cycle repeats with a new shiny "bling" project pushed by the new clique that rises to replace the old.  One can see this pattern from the Walking In Stations/monoclegate to Dust 514, now WoD and no doubt Valkyrie.

Bit of a Suprise to me, they entered the genre strutting like giants, oh well, Ophelia Immortal Online will get to be the premier MMO with vampires after all, it would have been made by now if it werent for WoD, on the plus side the later it is the shinier it gets to be, mmos are evolving, what mmos were in the past will not be what mmo's are in the future.
  • SteinarBSteinarB Member UncommonPosts: 54
Not at all surprised, honestly.  It's a problem for CCP though, because that means they still only have their EVE leg to stand on, and EVE is getting long in the tooth.  Though it still brings in the cash eventually it will start failing, as all games eventually do, and when that happens then that's it for CCP unless they've gotten another good product out the door to keep things running.

Nooo! One of the few sandbox games i expected! :(  Please tell me that they will at least reconsider making it at some point in the future. World Of Darkness is one of the best settings out there!

    so sad :(

I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it

MMOs now are populated with gold farmers, spammers and botters. It is pretty much dead. All those who still cling on that last hope of a "saviour" MMO might as well move on.

On a related note, CCP made the right move. Even if they managed to release WoD, people will be whining about the subs.

Pathetic, utterly pathetic. They kept shoving work on WoD to the sidelines so they could push their Dust game out...and we see how well THAT one did. They had a chance to offer a game that would've breathed new life into the tired old MMO market (because seriously, who wants *another* boring space game? ) *and* earn them another broad fanbase and make lots of money in the process. And now they pull this crap after all the promises they made about how awesome WoD was going to be? This is an insult to all the people who've supported their company over the years AND a huge slap in the face to the people who were doing their best to work on the game while they funneled money into stupid EVE

Instead of wasting more resources and manpower on what could have been another turkey, they pulled back to focus on Eve and shore up Dust as much as possible.

And who knows, maybe when things turn around and they get a bit better outside of Eve, Maybe WoD will come and be a better experience than they could have delivered presently.

Actually, the problem is that they developed dust without really having the backing behind them to do it. They would have been much better ending Dust in the early stages and continuing with the development of the WoD. People have one of two reactions to the WoD once they play it... they hate it, or they love it with a passion they have never known before. There is very little in between.

The WoD for me changed my life. Sounds ridiculous but it's true. It's a very long story, but I can say that it resulted in me meeting the love of my life on one of their chats. We've been together 15 years now, and our 8th wedding anniversary is in June. I even left my own country to be with him. And that's only part of it.

Take a look at the v20 site since they have a blog now. There are posts upon posts upon posts of people talking about how deeply the WoD has effected their lives. There's a reason why the announcement that the MMO for the WoD was going to be of Old WoD caused a huge amount of cheering. Because it is greatly loved.

CCP focused on the wrong thing and they realized it too late. I don't think they really knew what they were getting in to when they started developing the MMO for this game. What they saw was money, not the passion the players had for it. And then they wasted all that money on Dust, and it was too late to recover.

I'm hoping someone will have the brains to pick up where they left off and continue development.

lol. That's funny. EQN is nothing compared to other wonderful games that are coming out like Shroud of the Avatar and Citadel of Sorcery, among others.

Whatever happened to citadel of sorcery? I had forgotten all about it until just now reading your post.
