Citing bad sales, will ESO survive with console sales?

    vgchartz are "an estimate".

They do claim to include pre-orders - hence the reason there are PS4 and XB1 "sales"; they do claim to include digital.

How accurate are they? Well as FFXiV was mentioned above:

vgchartz numbers list 2013 sales as 684,113 and 2014 sales as 55,832. Total: 739,976.

Registrations were assumed to be sales in the Gamasutra article I was reading - but not subs! As far as I can tell there hasn't been any free trials of the games or buddy passes given out so, as the Gamasutra article states, registrations = sales (on PC, PS3 and PS4). Not exactly a huge number of sales but more than the vgchartz number - and probably released because Sony is selling its stake in Square Enix.

This doesn't mean the vgchartz numbers are wrong for TESO but it underscore the fact that they are an estimate.

However the point about Raptr and XFire is accurate. If TESO has been selling well then these services should have shown an increase, a rising trend. They don't. Which suggests low post-launch sales which ties in to why the retail price has come down etc.

I bought digital. Only way to buy mmorpg titles these days. Love it.

Most (almost all) people bought digital copies...

On top of that, we have allways known that ESO aims fully at the console market and that the PC market is only a aftertought and an open world testing environment.

On top of that... Forbes is still trying to proof their point.....  Its not objective journalisme, if you try everything to proof your PoV...

I agree. i think they will save themselves with console sales, the game seems like it was developed only with consoles in mind.

Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

The chart is couple weeks old, but of note.. ESO was the #1 game in sales globally for that week.  Can't be doing too badly..

How does VGChartz include digital sales directly from the publisher if the publishers aren't releasing sales figures?

I think you misunderstand the trolls. See they don't actually hate ESO, they really really want to play it, so they're hoping it fails as a P2P model so that they can play it F2P. It's a great tactic, constantly blast a newly released game hoping to convince people not to buy it or sub, then when it goes F2P, all of a sudden a couple million people are interested in it and then the forums are full of posts like, "Hey, it's actually a pretty good game!"

F2P has created this monster and it is poison on the industry.

That is not the popular opinion or perception. Either way is fell drastically short of its projections and EA is a terrible company.

I hope Zeni releases the sale numbers by end of month to put an end to all speculation. Although i have a gut feeling that sales were not spectacular hence the delay in annoucement.

Considering it doesn't include all the sales figures directly from ZOS which was their main advertisement through Beta of 5 million registered users,  One can only say, this chart is probably only 10% of the sales....

I think we are looking at 2-3 million at the least sold.   But wont know the numbers until after the subs kick in, which is what ESO is probably waiting for.

Its great that you posted this though, it kicks Zenimax in the arse to release the total figures, which is only a good thing.  Nice work.

You keep saying these numbers include digital sales, but you haven't linked it yet, which is a little odd, as you're not shy about linking other things. So why don't you provide a link?

Actually that would be right, more like 1.5,  the other million will be coming from STEAM when it launches.  Thanks for pointing that out.

Its not including digital sales, the official website.  Clearly states that it is only the retail distributuion of the game.  Only reason someone would have bought the retail was for the Collectors Edition, so around 250k Collectors editions isn't too bad actually.

One website said they were selling 4 out of 5 games as collectors editions also for digital sales.

ZOS better get stuff cleaned up if they want those numbers. Steam will be flooded with bad reviews if they do not.

So the tiny percentage of players and/or trolls that use forums wield enough power to bring a game down and force it into F2P just to avoid having to pay for it?

Rather than the games many flaws, bugs, exploits, bad pr etc etc being the cause of F2P?

    Not sure if serious?

its a good game but their outlook on grabbing as mush cash as quick as possible is wrong.

I personally am getting bored with theme parks, the next elders scrolls should be like dark souls 2 you summon someone.

after ESO they should make it a sandbox mmo unfortunately probably in 10 years time.

  • HorusraHorusra Member EpicPosts: 4,411
Seeing as no one can agree on what sandbox is....

I said they're hoping it fails as p2p. I didn't say that their efforts lead to the game going f2p. And each time a person is convinced not to play a game because of a troll, that *can* (does not mean will) be a lost sale and potential positive word of mouth to that person's friends.

And there are plenty of legitimate complaints that people can (and should) post about instead of threads like this. For example the broken Messages Across Tamriel which is a ticking time bomb for ZOS which I posted about. Trolls don't care about it though because they don't play the game, so actual bugs don't affect them, and having real, serious bugs fixed reduces the chances of them getting what they want. So you get nonsense threads and negative misinformation instead.

Want to complain about real flaws? Do it, there are plenty! We (actual ESO players) want them fixed too, so please do us a solid and post about them.

A website which doesn't give 1st party company sales statistics, doesn't provide global sales numbers and doesn't reflect accurate data in any way?

Whoa, where do I sign up for the "I hope ESO goes free to play so then I can play it" wagon?

Companies who publish figures in the first 2 weeks of a game are out to impress and spin a PR wheel. Bethesda and ZOS don't need to quite frankly. It's also never real information as box sales of a game need to be looked at over a 3-6 month period, not a 2 week period.

I'm sure when the dust has settled and they collate the full information after 3 months you'll see the numbers somewhere around 2-4 million box sales.

Man the duo of biggdaddykitty really are trying to hard.  If someone used vg in a good way they would be all over it like kitty litter saying how that is not a valid source to use.  I don't get why people try so hard to hate a video game.  Why not just move on to something else ?

Considering games like GW2 and SWTOR announced the impressive pre order sales number as well as first two weeks sale numbers... people were hoping that Zenimax would do the same considering it is an ES title.

I honestly thought that within first two weeks zeni would announce something like 'ESO breaks pre order record with 2 million'.

Global Total as of 05th Apr 2014 (units): 0.25m
Platform: Microsoft Windows Also on: Mac OS X, Xbox One, PlayStation 4
    Developer: Unknown Genre: Action

As you can see the total was from 5th of april, One day after launch.  Stating that 253k retail boxes sold.   If it was like the digital sales, 4 out of 5 boxes were Collectors Edition.    So we can take 4/5 ths of this and multiply it by $99  = $20 million in sales off of CE alone, then you add the 50k at the $60 box, you get $3 million.   So whats reported in a one day sale of the game after launch is $23 million.  Not too bad.  Have to wait and see how much the digital is now, which will be much much higher then retail because of the beta campaign they ran with 5 million registered users who would have bought direct digital downloads from ZOS.

Day 1 = 253k retail sales.   If you times that by the week you would have more like 1,771,000 sales.

by your own numbers it shows 17.5 million in sales direct , and a sub of 3.75mill a month

or at least 45 million/yr and that if no one else joins up....

and i have to say it the bugs of beta almost had me not take the jump.....

this is why they should have ha done more beta with a lot less of these bugs

im actually pleased at the game ive yet to fall through anything, get my head stuck, etc....

what they shouold have done here was drop 10 off the pricing on both and i might have spent 10 more to get the imperial and that would be ten more then i have...
