I saw so many more bots in FFXIV:ARR when it launched and they had been running 2 mmos for years....to the point where there'd be multiple ones overrunning each other. Go to a node and three dudes would teleport on top of me.
And no i'm not slamming FFXIV that is just the most recent launch game I've played.
I agree that FFXIV has had issues. However, they have shown that they understand the issues, and that they are committed to working through them. I give Square a lot of credit for blowing the initial launch, pulling their head out of their behind, and doing what was needed to make a great game.
I think that ESO will improve, but it is going to be rough until they start realizing how clueless they were, and re-adjust based on a more realistic approach.
FFXIV:ARR was totally overrun with bots at the relaunch recently. The only reason why it wasn't a serious problem for players was because the nodes weren't contested (everyone could mine the same node).
The goldsellers are very experienced at botting MMO's by now. It appears to be a very lucrative passtime, and I'm quite sure they don't pay any taxes on their earnings, lol
So last night I was waiting for my wife to patch the game and decided to do some mining. I found a great spot I could run around in a large circle and get some iron.
I started noticing players wearing the starter rags with chains on their wrists and feet mining the area. I didn't think anything of it at first until I saw three iron nodes next to each other. Then I saw one of the rag wearing guys materialize out of thin air on top of a ore node and mine it. There was a delay after he appeared before he started mining.
I watched this player vanish and appear standing on the next node a few feet away, then again to another, then again to a jute plant. Then I started seeing more of these teleporting bots around, always with random names like adfcdb. So I started reporting them with the F command. I counted 33 different teleporting bots in the area in about 30- 45 minutes while waiting for my wife.
I would say the bots are just a tad out of hand, AND would like to know how they are teleporting to the resource nodes perfectly without getting banned.
Anyways if you see em, report them with F. Even if they vanish, if you pressed F on them you can still select report player. It only takes about 20 seconds to report them. I just say something like, teleporting harvester bot, and leave it at that.
The problem is not bots, really. People will be, well, people-like.
The problem is sorta with the developer. Honestly, either they same this coming and decided to ignore or defer, or they didn't see this coming, and that's just idiotic - botting static nodes is a pretty obvious thing people will do. Either way, tsk, tsk.
The real problem is a subset of players who defend developers using the logic that "well it happens in all MMO launches, so it's okay (or give them a break)" You people: You are more responsible for these issues then the developers. You let them get away with it. You defend them here. You cut down people who complain about poor or lazy design. You support them with your subscriptions. You are enablers. Because of you, the next MMO will have these same issues.
You know, you can be a fan of TES, you can love this game, and you can complain about the nonsense - these can co-exist without contradiction!
The problem is really people like you. People who believe an online game should be running flawlessly within the 1st month its released. I don't think anyone is kissing a developers ass in giving them some time to fix issues. The amount of time allowed, or put up with is for the individual player to decide. Not you,or anyone else on these forums. If I want to give them a break, its really non of your business. You make your opinion know with your wallet, I will with mine.
It's our business when you're enabling this type of shoddy business practice to occur in the mmo industry. We have you and yours to thank for this huge scam. Thanks!...
A product should only be sold when it's one hundred fucking percent golden.
Edit for clarification: I'm talking about the perpetual beta that has become rampant within this industry and those who excuse it.

I'm pretty sure they are well aware of their mistakes. I believe this because of how they have been scrambling for the last year or so to make their game more Elder Scrollsy.
They put all that effort and time into making that useless firstperson mode.... I'm not saying it doesn't work functionally, but it doesn't work in a game where all the mobs someone else just killed are spawning 2 feet behind you and you don't even know it. I'd love to see footage of someone that performs amazingly in PVP in firstperson.
IMO their absolute biggest mistake was developing this game for 5 years before announcing it. When they announced it the game was pretty much complete. Not saying it was tested and bug free(haha). Then they showed the world:
Zenimax: "Hey we made an Elder Scrolls MMO what do you guys think?"
ES fanboys, "OMGWTF THAT'S NOT ELDER SCROLLS"
Zenimax: "oops...maybe we should have gotten some input before we made the entire game....lets make it more elder scrolls like...."

LOL. I hate to tell you this, but its not botting. Let me explain what is happening here since I do the same thing.
People mine the route, and then at the end of the mining route, log off and back in. what happens when you log off and back in is that it will put you into another Phase where the mining nodes are not harvested yet. So instead of waiting for new nodes to spawn which take a while, all one has to do is log out and back in to get fresh new nodes in another phase. What you are seeing is people entering your phase after having mined the last phase dry.
I realized this a while back when I was in beta and people would do this with enchanting runes, because of how long they took to respawn. Its faster to just log out and into another phase where you can continuously collect resource materials for your crafting.
So that's whats happening when you see that, its not botting, its people phase mining.
I would say the bots are just a tad out of hand, AND would like to know how they are teleporting to the resource nodes perfectly without getting banned.
(...)
That sounds like GW2. Exact same thing went on there for a long time unchecked. I would wager that it is still going on.
I haven't seen harvesting bots in GW2 - ever. Maybe it's because GW2 nodes are instanced per player.
But nice try. Got anything to say about FFXIV, too?

Teleport bots do exist on GW2. They just don't farm nodes anymore cause those don't bring money.
Teleport bots are only used by RMT now and only to teleport to npcs and sell loot.
I, personally, have not had too many bugs. It has mostly been a lack/missing content and some exploits. The current issue with bots and such is because they are new to MMO's and dont have systems in place to deal with these type of things. I expected this, based on how clueless they sounded in their public statements prior to launch.
The aggravating thing is that these issues aren't new. Similar to "why are we still questing like it's the days of WoW", it's "why isn't there a better way to deal with bots by now"?
As a dev you have to know by now that there will be bots in your game and that people will be pissed at them and at you, the dev.
As I and others have suggested, how hard can it be to temporarily hire a bunch of CRs to focus on this issue? It also helps if in your development you put in some tools that make it easier to deal with these guys, like a way to turn on a tracker for player location and actions, so you can spot teleport hacks, or someone parked in the same spot for hours killing the same mob over and over again.
BTW, did anyone check the TOS if Zenimax allows the use of macro tools and afk'ing? Meaning, are the bots standing in the cave knee-deep in dead spider queens actually doing something illegal?
To bad i do not think its possible to have permission from the OS to kill another process. That would make it easy for ESO to simply kill any botting program that was running. But it could close the second a botting process was detected.
dont feel bad i just saw some guy with 9 letter name dsadsa(somehtng) teleport to every wood and mine in site...
i was like....fuck this ....i give up...i quit
and they wont be able to go free to play with this model ...its not doable....
and if the pay to play model is bad wait till free to play starts. IT WILL BE SCREWED...why bother go elsewhere move on...
love the game but botters ruined it
i'm done.
Relog to change instance, I've been running for two days now without seeing a single open world bot, though the public dungeons are still filled with the bot blobs. Most of the bots that I saw when I started were near the starting city too, going a bit further reduced the density a lot, and now at lvl20 I dont see them anymore.
Though I might be just lucky? We'll see, but they better come with a solution to the bots, they still ruin every public dungeon grr...
so if i have 2 new guild members and i say hey i can make you some cool gear with my mottifs but i have to go get iron ore guess where i have to go to get the ore....YUP WHERE THE BOTTERS ARE...i managed to get like 86 ore before he appeared and everything everywhere was gone ....i wandered for half a hour where there are lots...
too much effort ...and your saying to relog ...how many times a day do i have to do that...it gives me an actual headache....
we all should refuse to sub and leave the botters all by themsleves for a month then zenimax will know
the only way to solve this is to have the ore/wood appear randomly .....that aint gonna happen so botters can learn locations and then program a bot to go get it and then trad eot anther player to sell for them
Personally I didnt have to relog once. I saw a couple of times a botter on the very low levels near Daggerfall but generally speaking it did not have any impact on my crafting if we count the hundreds upon hundreds of ore I gathered in total. Maybe he is stalking you in particular if it ruins your crafting completely, or you are exaggerating, or I got super lucky, I dont know.
well the prob there is that it wold require a client side program and in affect a HACK of your own pc....might damage stuff and if your innocent and the software glitches then what...you have ot get that darn right.....and crackers will just nuke it out and fake a detectable piece to be there....
read the link...there are solutions and they involve the actual network....and the one and only solution for the bot slows it to the point that its at best equal to what you or i can do and at worst ...even worse...
i cold live with bots that are slowed to usefulness that it actually starts puttng coin and resources into our guilds and friends...that also would diminish the bots ability to make sales and thus continue to diminish a want or need for them to exist.
as i said in economics...if you had one guy with a millin he just banks all the cash and spends 5% a month....but if you had 20 people with 50000 then might only bank 5% and spend the rest....
the idea here is that by removing the bots monopoly you untag the economy in full.
i get resources i sell to guild and YOU....now i have coin and grow more...new players can get cheaper resources and even get crafted items made....
by this time the bots not making near enough money now to justify its existance and most will go look for easier targets

I have to agree here, when ever I go to a new mmorpg I know for a fact before logging in first time that there will be more or less trouble around some areas of the game, and there will be extra downtime at least on the first weeks. That's the reality. Thinking anything other simply means you are living in a dream world.
Understanding this, and having some patience (which is mandatory with this genre) goes a long way, but if that is impossible, then by all means whine away like crazy, I dont really care, my view of the world just happens to be a bit more realistic I guess. Even complex singleplayer games have usually their fair share of problems and bugs and glitches, and if anything mmorpgs are complex as hell considering everything.
dont feel bad i just saw some guy with 9 letter name dsadsa(somehtng) teleport to every wood and mine in site...

hrm i never thought about that....i got another guy yesterday whisper me some real strange crap....i was in shadowfen grouped with a bud grinding some mombs and this guy with poor english comes on and starts yammering about banning me cause im preventing low levels from completing missions....
perhaps they are pissed i play all day and that i and a few of us are actually messing up there precious lil bot farm runs?
i was like what are you talking about..i go i mine ore in low areas till i get enough then i leave...have a ncie day and that bot appeared about 20 minutes after i was on i managed to get some before it got into its teleporting mode
nearly a 100 ore....
one way to test that is to let ESO know whose on my friends list and let all of them get a lookin over....ill even tell each of them im going to do that first to see reactions.
anyhow im gonna reload in and see what gives if a bot farmer appears quick i know they have me on there list....guild or otherwise. then ill get more proactive....and give a very detailed report to eso...
i want this game to succeed its fun...
the other solution is to give every player who buys the game a billion gold....
ROFL...then its game over for bots
and make exp from crafting for stuff you only get from loot
dont feel bad i just saw some guy with 9 letter name dsadsa(somehtng) teleport to every wood and mine in site...

Well I would go that far to say they ruined it. Nodes are on like a 3-5 minute timer. The bots didnt slow me down hardly at all. I just ran the circle and came back. eventually I was harvesting faster than them, because there is a delay when they appear before they start harvesting.
It is a problem bu lets not get our panties all crusty over it.
First of all I understand the complaints from those experiancing them. Havn't run into them much except for the under the map mining bug.
Apart from that think about this.
ESO isn't a small unknown name
People really think with almost any MMO or MMORPG having gold"scam"website's that these people using/working with/for goldselling website's would leave TESO alone?
These are the things developers can not counter in alpha or beta's, those type of people do not often expose themselfs even if they are in alpha/beta. Because they are there to learn the game. So when the game is released and developers will be somewhat unprepared because of their non excisting data that could have revealed them. Atleast that's what I think.
So take into account how "young" the game in reference bots are in ALL mmo and mmorpg's that are populair, wasn't there even a long during bot issue in WoW last year for about a year long?
Matt has already spoken that his team is very aware of these bot issue's.

A0 every spawn you also record the player and time
its easy as you know the code and time it takes to goto a to b.
if some smuck is showing up all over hteplace too fast....then you open up records on transactions for that player and fun begins.
its not hard....and it could in fact get automated....it might actually force a bot design that actually has to walk to the places....
at least then i can have a level playing filed to leap frog about to get stuff.read this link
its what i mean aobut an autodetection script base don traffic to locations and such
im pretty sure most of us dont farm all day every day all week
you get the hint....then you just script up bans ot all that player dealt with...

Even complex singleplayer games have usually their fair share of problems and bugs and glitches, and if anything mmorpgs are complex as hell considering everything.
hrm i never thought about that....i got another guy yesterday whisper me some real strange crap....i was in shadowfen grouped with a bud grinding some mombs and this guy with poor english comes on and starts yammering about banning me cause im preventing low levels from completing missions....
perhaps they are pissed i play all day and that i and a few of us are actually messing up there precious lil bot farm runs?
i was like what are you talking about..i go i mine ore in low areas till i get enough then i leave...have a ncie day and that bot appeared about 20 minutes after i was on i managed to get some before it got into its teleporting mode
nearly a 100 ore....
one way to test that is to let ESO know whose on my friends list and let all of them get a lookin over....ill even tell each of them im going to do that first to see reactions.
anyhow im gonna reload in and see what gives if a bot farmer appears quick i know they have me on there list....guild or otherwise. then ill get more proactive....and give a very detailed report to eso...
i want this game to succeed its fun...
the other solution is to give every player who buys the game a billion gold....
ROFL...then its game over for bots
and make exp from crafting for stuff you only get from loot
im here ro be entertained not play fucking cop...
So please tell me what game didn't have bots at launch?
