I've been following AA for a while, was excited at first with the Korean CBTs and had that excitement wane with the decisions made in patches but I figure Trion won't bring the worst of it to the west.
I am not, however, buying a founders pack for the simple reason that I have no idea what I'm paying for. I'd be okay with three months of subbing if it was sub only or if I knew what subbing gives you in a hybrid model, but we don't know that. I'd be okay with credit in the store, if I knew what the store sold, but we don't know that either. Most of the cost of this thing is essentially money they're borrowing now with the promise of repayment upon release, but we just have to trust that 3 months sub is worth $45 to us or that $75 in store credit will be actually worth $75.

Yeah I don't see it...
The OP paid for testing on a completed game, more or less. The rest still will play for free. I can't decide if he's actually affecting your wallet, and you are pushing it off as some greater good rhetoric...
So is there anyway I can get into one of the betas without paying $150 right now? I really want to check out the game and if I like it will drop the $50 on the cheap package but I like first hand experience with games before I drop that kind of money. I tried checking out the RU server but it says I cant join in my area.
Anyway getting around this? Anything I can do besides just wait?

Wait until Beta release (June) and buy the cheaper silver package (49.99 i think).
Apply for alpha/beta testing.
Some have contests for free keys and packages every so often.
Buy/rent an Asian account, i think they are still doing that.
Pray
Ask a rich relative for some money, tell them its life or death
Hold up a bank, but I would advice against this as it is frowned upon by society and a felony
Buy a cheaper game or another F2P game until release.

It promotes this idea that companies can charge an arm and leg to allow us to test their buggy software. It is even worse in this case when the game has already been released.
Anyone who buys into this idea is helping the downfall of all game genres.
When did gamers become such panzies. If you dont want to spend 150 for an Alpha.. then dont.. But why come on here and whine about how we are killing the genre..

The downfall to this genre came from sinlge player console junkies slowly stripping away everything MMO about a MMORPG. Almost every major feature of old school games were stripped away and left out, just offering boring, quick, and meaningless story lines and a shell of a world. Now these features are slowly making a retun, and AA offer a majority of what I enjoy in a MMO. I will support them, as long as they dont go to far with this and to a NGE/CU of SWG.
But I do understand where you are coming from, paying that much for digital trinkets that offer hardly anything to your account is bad business, and has gotten much worse. All these people justify it by what you get, but you never get what you pay for in a digital world lol. Im buying the 150$ one because......... well simply put...... i want to.
Im still reading up on it and ill make a decision later tonight. The 3 months, 11k coins, and glider mean nothing. I can simply get all that at a much cheaper prices. And dont forget about the sales coming up. Seems every major MMO always has a huge sale around beta and before release at a much cheaper price and with more goodies. I fear many that paid the 150$ early will be highly upset later on

Money isnt the issue. I just like making good, what I consider, investments. I like getting games that I will spend a ton of time on. This way I get to spend more money on the things I like.
Ill try for the contests. Sucks but better than nothing I guess.
This is NOT a beta for an in development game!!! This is just a localization of a game that is already released. But fools will throw out money at just about anything if someone shouts loud enough and puts enough shinies around it LOL.

I really could care less how much you decide to spend of your own money on a game.
My issues isn't so much for ArcheAge since the game's already in good shape, but what I do care about is that Alphas and Betas are supposed to be for QA-ing software before it releases. That has now changed. And I think companies will now have different priorities concerning the purposes of these periods. And I don't think it will work out to be what's best for the consumer.
Another issue I have is that these are now essentially games available on the market AS-IS. OK, Great you get to play them, but they won't work right and that's to be expected since it is Alpha/Beta after all. But That will become a crutch for the companies to continue to slack off in quality.
Also, By the time these games get to an official release, many players will be "done" with the game......before it even launches. The companies won't care, they got their money. But how many times are players going to want to level again and again and again after every wipe before they say.....OK, I've had enough? Players will be burned out and no one is going to give a shit when the game finally does release..
What company started the trend of paying for beta access? I can't for the life of me remember. It has become so too much of the norm.
Anyways, the $150 dollar pack isn't bad if you intend to become quite invested in the game and play for a while. However, if you are uncertain, it honestly isn't worth it as you may lose out on money if you should decide to stop playing.
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed: And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!" ~Lord George Gordon Byron
If people are willing to pay $150, then that's fine by me. I wouldn't, even with the perks, but I'm not going to judge those that do.
However, this particular set of packages really ticks me off. Not the $150 pack, but the other packs. The difference between alpha and beta here isn't just how soon you can get in. While alpha is 24/7, minus downtime, the beta access they are selling is occasional beta "events". Basically, they are selling access to what had always been "marketing betas".
If you are "jonesing" for an mmo to play and AA is the game that has caught your interest, the only full time access to the game is the $150 alpha package. Not willing/able to cough up $150, but willing to wait a little longer to get in for a more reasonable sum? Well, this game has nothing to offer you unless you will be satisfied with an occasional weekend of access.
SOE did it right with Landmark. A lower tier of support, along with less perks, still gives you 24/7 beta access, but those paying for alpha access got in several weeks before those who just got beta access.
For some, I may be splitting hairs, but the difference here means that since I'm not willing/able to go $150, I'll be passing on a lower tier package I would otherwise have been very happy to buy. It also reminds me that Trion needs to earn back some good faith after shipping Defiance with only about 40 hours of content. The hobbled beta access in the other two packs makes me dislike them a little more, even though AA is a game I really would like to support.
I would have been happy to support this game with a purchase, but now, I'll just wait for a free beta key give away or launch.
This is NOT a beta for an in development game!!! This is just a localization of a game that is already released. But fools will throw out money at just about anything if someone shouts loud enough and puts enough shinies around it LOL.
I often wonder if anyone reads before posting these days , its already been stated that you get quite a lot for your money, those that want to pay for the privilege , well that's their business, and calling people fools because they have a little disposable income to play around with is just downright rude.

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
Paying for access to Alpha is in my opinion absurd, And paying for a beta key is downright stupid I don't care how much money you have disposable or otherwise. And in my experience any "swag" they throw at you to make the pill go down easier is obsolete and forgettable within a month of the game going live. Yes you might have been the first to step foot in the world and try on a few levels but again as usual once the game goes live your accomplishments will be washed away by the scores of us who didn't pay anything extra for the same game. And yes I know its becoming industry standard to charge people for early access but listen up especially those idiots in the village if you keep paying they will keep charging so exercise some patience its still free.thx

Yeah I don't see it...
you clearly didnt get his/her point. Accepting those practices only lead the companies to do more and more shady practices in the future, charging more and more for less and less. Etc, etc. Its been happening for a while now because people keep supporting it. Now games priced at the standard $60 dollars are unfinished or with content that has been left out and if you want the full package you have to buy $80+ editions. For mmos its the same thing with overpriced alpha nonsense and pre purchase.

It really is nothing to do with anyone else except the person spending it.
When an in development f2p game charges for a founders pack you can at least justify it, because the game is in development and wont be getting box sales upon release. Still can border on the scammy, but it can be looked at as a form of crowdfunding.
ArcheAge is a released game with its own revenue streams. They are doing this only because they can, they know people will fork over the 150.
You act as if f2p means everything is free. It simply isn't f2p is just a model where you can play a base version of the game for free. In ArcheAge's case that base version is all of the content and paying just gets you some perks. This is just a way to bundle 120 dollars of those perks with a 30 dollar alpha/beta perk.
The question shouldn't be whether or not its a scam rather whether its worth the money or not. Is Patron status worth 15 dollars a month and so on. This question can be applied to all games whether they are subscription or f2p.
