What's missing?

Xion1985Xion1985 Member UncommonPosts: 229

I know that I've only played in one beta weekend, and I realize that an MMO shouldn't usually be judged by a short time investment.  Wildstar seems to have everything feature wise you would expect a modern mmo to have.  The world even seems to have some life to it.  However the entire time I played it this last weekend I just felt there was something missing, there was nothing really pulling me in to keep playing.

It's obviously just my opinion, and maybe if I give it more time I will find my reason to keep logging on and give it the time an MMO needs in order to really sink it's teeth into you.  I'm just curious for those who really like Wildstar what is driving them to keep playing?  Or is my lack of initial interest has been a common theme?

Wildstar suffers from the sameness that every other mmo put out today suffers from.

    Are there differences yes...

But, they are more cosmetic and "surface" level.

I am waiting for someone to please make a game that is truly innovative, fun and refreshing.

Like many folks on these forums (myself included), it may be that the part of your brain that derives pleasure from MMORPGs probably gave out a while back. Think of a drug addict or alcohol partaking as much and with the same intensity as your average MMORPG player. Just how fast do you think organ failure would occur?

You may suffer from Massive Multiplayer Online Enjoyment Deffiancy. The best we can do at this point is hope the makers of Viagra take pity on us one of these days and make some sort of prescribed medication, that if taken and we suffer from RPing for more than 4 hours strait, we'll have to call our doctors. Until then we're stuck chasing the proverbial dragon so to speak.

To me it has everything I want in an MMO right now. Nice systems! I could care less about the world or (failed) innovation. I just want it to work, and I want developers that understand that systems is what brings players back, not gimmicks, pretty gfx or voiced quests.

    For me it's lore.

The game has some quite nicely written-up lore pieces. Some are funny, some are serious, many are informative. I admit I would also enjoy a bit more audio (like quest voice-acting), but you can't have them all...

And the combat is also very entertaining in my opinion. Very pleasant, doesn't ruin the story, and usually makes sense.

Eh maybe your right, I do find myself playing MMORPG's less and less as time goes on.  Well I guess my hope lies in pharmaceutical companies.

I want a true sandbox MMO like SWG pre-nerf was. MMOs these days seem to be on-rails gameplay that funnels you from one quest hub to the next, in a prescribed order.

It seems to me as if MMOs have actually gotten LESS innovative and more restricting as the industry has matured!

Besides some mechanics, the very PvP and raid centric endgame (that will backfire hard on Carbine) to me Wildstar feels way too much like a "game" instead of a "world".

Unlike the veteran mmorpgs, today no one creates worlds anymore. It's all a constant chase from one event to another, keeping people busy with twitch and fluff. Jumpgames here, interactable objects everywhere in my face etc... i do like this -in certain games though.

In an mmorpg, i prefer a world to roam and get lost in and find my own adventure instead of not being able to walk 10 meters without having gimmicks thrown at a kinky pink squeeking bouncing something resembling my character.

The game is slick and has some challenges even though it is a themepark with nothing really new. What's probably going to make it work or not will be the people, because otherwise they might as well keep playing whatever they are playing today.

I'm a preorder player btw, been in the beta since January.

I will say I found how many things to click on the screen all the time to be jarring.  It felt like every couple steps another gear would pop up or something was glowing that I needed to click on it.  Maybe to much UI.  I'm not sure if less UI and shiny stuff to click would have made my experience better but it may have.  I found certain parts of the story to be interesting, I think their trying for the borderlands feel space cowboy things and all that.  However the idea that maybe it's not what's missing but to much of what they have is an idea I probably agree with.

To me It seems like too much of the same ol same ol..

When I read you will keep trying and maybe find a reason to log in and play. I thought I felt pretty much the same way, and thinking back anytime I went ahead and bought a game and tried to invest time with this feeling to start with it never pans out.

Not sure if its the old cartooney look of WoW it has or the same old run the quests in order from one end of the map to the other.

Just doesn't seem to have the draw you in and make you think a bit element.  Great for a mindless sit down kill some stuff waste a bit of time game, but is it worth paying for when there are many others that do that already.

I have been in the last 3 Betas weekends including this past one, and still undecided on this game, most likely will pass on it I think.

I also found the early level experience widely varies depending on which race you roll. Overall, I found the Exile newbie zone and the early part of the Dominion lowbie zone Ellevar to be the most enjoyable because of story/lore, ease of getting around and flow. But then Ellevar falls apart around level 10 when it runs out of quests.

Just really depends on what you roll and what you like. But I was very surprised to see that much of a difference. Because it's beta I expect them to smooth it out and I submitted a number of feedback/bug reports about it.

Btw for those who preordered (like me), if you ask for a refund you'll get it. But they will email and IP ban you. Though most of my friends have asked for refunds, I haven't yet because I'm not sure I want to be IP banned.

Honestly its missing early game stuff. Its just lacking, which is a shame cause later on it has so much more to offer, with zones and activities available within them being a lot stronger. Their desire to keep things 'familiar' and use the new combat system as a driving force and get people use to it just needs... more. The experience needs just more to it early on to hook people in besides the combat I feel. Its not that it lacks it through out, I feel it does an extroidnary job specially as you get further in, but starting off it needs more 'bedazzling'.
  • SuperchieftianSuperchieftian Member Posts: 88

Early game is heavily lacking. Suppose to pick up later, but even after level 20 I still had to push myself to play with friends until I decided the game was not fun.

Lore is really bad as well.

You are implying that it is OP's fault for lack of enjoyment.  I say it is the design choices of the devs making the same old game for the last 10 years.  What's missing are risk vs reward, consequences for your actions and freedom.  But this is typical for later themeparks.

I actually sort of enjoyed my time in the beta.  I think it was the sci fi theme and the cool sounds.  The combat could really use a mouselook option.  Why is it required for me to hold down the right mouse button to look/aim?  I also had some FPS issues.  I have no idea how a game with almost no textures could not run at max for everyone.

It all depends on what you've played and what you'd like to play.  I've been waiting for WildStar for quite sometime, and was lucky enough to get in the beta weekends before the pre-order started.  For me, it was a no-brainer- I pre-ordered right away.  I enjoy all of it, and with every patch have found myself more pleased with my purchase.  I didn't make it into the pre-order weekend this past weekend, as I've been learning how to rig 3d models, and just figured I'd give it time to cool off before I got too overheated on it.

Pacing is a big deal in MMO's.  For me, at least.  If I spend 2 weeks playing nothing but that, I'll take a break and more than likely never go back.  I'm not really a hardcore MMO player, either.  I've tinkered around and played a sh!t ton of them, but I've never stayed long-term.  With WildStar, I can see it being the only MMO I'll subscribe to and log into every now and again.  For me, it was a nice departure from the typical MMO.  To other people, it was the same old same old.

Perceptions are simply that, and everyone must find their own- not someone else's who kind of resembles theirs.

A few things I miss in the game so far:

    - Auto Attack (while it seems an addon can overcome that).

    - Auto Pathing for easier movement on the map, going to NPCs, etc.

Beta weekenders cap is level 17, and the game really starts around level 20 after they have taught you a bit about how to play. By the time you get to level 30ish you will know if you like the game. Its worth investing the time. That is if you like a challenge and sick of easy mode games. Dungeons that will blow your mind and... nm just get to level 30ish you will see.

I've been in beta since December, and I haven't touched it much since late January. My biggest problem is how samey the game is compared to other themeparks. If I wanted to play WoW, I'd just play WoW...I'm not sure why developers fail to see this. I could see Wildstar being insanely fun for the hardcore raiding folks, but aside from that, there's other games that I feel deliver a better experience overall.

Been playing the Beta since last November (got real lucky and got a key early). W* seems so-so and unremarkable except for the theme, and the overwhelming amount of 'things' to do. I've tried every class to see where I feel most comfortable. Each has their own feel, and difference in play style. The game itself has gotten smoother and more optimized, and I have been generally happy with the experience. It really clicked; however, when I got into a group... Wow... I have to admit, things just clicked then. It was a simple, low level spider boss for a quest that suggested 5 players. I had just created a stalker, and was solo leveling. A LFG was broadcast in my area and I jumped in. If Carbine has done anything extremely well, it's grouping. Not sure how to explain it, much like those who are wondering what is missing, but the group experience was spot on for me.

What keeps me coming back is the combat and challenging pve content.

I see many of the people posting negatively in this thread enjoy games that Wildstar doesn't claim to be.  It never claimed to be innovative, it claimed to update on already established and well liked mechanics.  It claimed to have large scale raids again, which it appears that a large population actually want.

Yes it is themepark, but that doesn't mean it is necessarily lacking at anything in particular.  Some guy built a piano in his house using 758 items and the level of patience that I will never achieve.  It has arenas, battlegrounds, warplots, open world pvp (remains to be seen if it is active).  It has very challenging dungeons beginning at level 15.  It DOES have a very deep and interesting story in it, but you have to do some reading...THE HORROR!  Additionally with the story, it has optional and simple solo dungeons.

Ya its not for everyone but I will say this. Its not like GW2 where its just get out of the red. Wildstar at higher levels makes this system more and more complex, to the point its far from easy mode. Its just part of the game design and they really put it to work!!! You really have to get to level 20 and do your first dungeon boss to get what I am saying and thats just a small tip of whats to come.
