[Column] Elder Scrolls Online: The Road Ahead is Paved With Questions

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Now that The Elder Scrolls Online has reached the end of what has been a somewhat rocky first 30 days of game time, the question of whether to continue subscribing has to be on the minds of some players. With subscription games, developers and companies have to demonstrate that their game is worth your monthly investment. Late last week, Game Director Matt Firor published a message on the ESO website discussing the issues that have been happening with the game, as well as what's to come in the first update, as well as a roadmap for some of the other changes the team has planned ahead for the coming months. While these seem to address some of the issues players have had, are they enough, and how effective will they be?

"The issue of better loot often being contained in dungeon chests, and the competition to unlock those wasn't addressed"

Yes it was per the 1.1 Patch Notes

    Dungeon Chest Changes
Chests within instances have undergone two changes:

    • Shared Chests – Each player in the group who is within 50 meters of the chest when it is unlocked will get an individual roll on the chest.
    • Reduced Number of Chests – Since each chest yields rewards for all group members, we have reduced the number of chests in instances to two total. Each instance will always have two chests in then, but the location of these two chests will be random within the dungeon.
    • These changes do not affect chests that appear in public spaces, only those within instances.

Unless you were referring to the public dungeons.

Yeh, so now there's 2 chances at loot in a dungeon instead of like.. 15. You hardly got owt worthwhile in the first place, now it's just pointless them even being there since you've got to waste so much time trying to find them.. be better off just farming some same level enemies for that time instead.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Really good write up Christina. You understood the Bat Swarm problem, that means you've been playing.

I think ESO is in a pretty good place right now. In game sounds and looks lot different than the forums.

I expect the Xbox and PS4 versions to launch later this summer. Yeah ESO is in a good place.

Guild Kiosks.  Guild stores open to everyone that are available to the highest-bidding guild.

    Pointless gimmick feature.

"ESO is in a good place" - really?    Boss fights camped by bots and players - waiting to slay a boss for 2 gold pieces?

No - ESO is in a very bad place.

Boss camping is being nerfed dude! They just increased the time between loots of all delve and overworld bosses. So camping is becoming less of a problem. This was just done a week or two ago?

After the 1st month, every AAA title had released their marketing spin numbers. With ESO, the only number we have seen is the number of registered beta users.

    Registered beta users?

No, I think ESO is in trouble.

I will rather sub. till I am finished with the game than buying wildstar.

if EQN was releasing ESO would have seen me go or destiny.

After the first zone with public dungeons this is really not an issue.  The people that keep spouting this stuff have not played since the first week.

All other issues aside, and they are legion, this has struck me as what should be fan's most worrying aspect for quite a while. Either they don't have numbers they can at all spin as good, Zeni is so mind bogglingly incompetent that basic marketing escapes them, or both.

Whichever it is, it's not good.

Overall, if ESO is in a good place... I'd hate to see what a bad place looked like.

If it's happening at any point in the game, regardless of when or where it is... then it still exists and is still an issue to people going through that portion of the game.

When it's no longer affecting anyone at any point of the game, then you can say it's not an issue.

Until then... it's an issue. No amount of cherry-picking "conditions" is going to change that.

Attempting to dismiss an argument outright on that condition is also pretty lame.

Yet you are doing the same....90% of the game is free of the boss camps, but you say that 10% makes the game utter crap.  I find your assessment to be disingenuous.  Many of the low level issues are not bots anymore...just multiple players doing it.

Edit:  Guess Eve is the shittiest game on Earth...been around how long and bots are still mining ruining other people's mining experience...

Ive been enjoying ESO. (level 48) now, and its been the best lore in a fantasy mmo to date.

i wish there wasnt such a thing in the game as 'endgame' thats just lame terms for players bored with the game.

and would of loved to see further exploration in the game with content and no level cap much like elder games.

go in try a quest = failed it , go do some exploration get better gear and comeback to it. i dont like beign bottle neck into a zone much less in a story.

i think Zen is doin a pretty good job managing the game- ill keep an eye out on how the game evolves over time. with timecards.= if they ever release them.

iam in  no rush to get any Veteran points tbh-

Stonefall first zone....Glenumbria first zone....the others are multibox bots that follow and repeat the action of the first character...a program still inexistence in WoW today.  But you guys expect them to have it all handled in one month issues that WoW and Eve have not handled in 10 years.

  • BeansnBreadBeansnBread Member EpicPosts: 7,254

Multi-boxing is allowed in WoW and EVE. Botting isn't.

Botting in ESO works so well because of how they handled resource nodes and boss spawns. If they figure out a way to randomize these nodes or make a mini game out of gathering them, bots would be much less prevalent. If they made the little mini-bosses either difficult or made them drop no loot, botting would also be less prevalent. They just designed their systems up to this point to be a great place for botters.

why put this here? are you that bitter over a video game? I do not get it especially from you , someone who generally doesnt get negative here. The game is fine, just because you do not like it doesnt mean its failing because they do not release some fake numbers like rift and the rest of the last 6 years of games. Its a themepark , most here want full loot pvp nonsense dig in the sand games but it has its place just like every other mmorpg out here does. So why focus on the negative for especially over something you do not know is fake or fiction?

WoW does not allow you to chain your characters together...it gets you banded.  If all follow and repeat the same action...all mages all cast firebolt the same moment together and you report they get banned in WoW.

Eve has mining bots that get banned...separate issues.

So far botting past level 14 has not been an issue for me.  Have not really seen it but once at around lvl 27 and it was a chain bot multiboxer running around a dungeon.  The teleporting guys I have not seen past the first zone.  On par I would not say my experience or negative experience from bots has been any worse than WoW or Eve.  Annoying, but hardly game breaking.

Only a day or so left before my time runs out. Bitterly disappointing for me I'm afraid. A lot of the toms hardware review was spot on. It looks fabulous, it plays so, so. But there are too many bad game mechanics for me. Originally bought the game to play with wifey, but it is really difficult to play together. You must stay on exactly the same part of yet another tedious quest otherwise you cant even find each other or help each other out. Sick and tired of the same quest after quest after quest...

Whose dumb idea was it to let others loot the chest you just opened... really annoying crap.

Crafting at first looked really good, but ended with hours spent shuffling bagfuls of crap around trying to find space. Way too expensive to keep expanding your bags if you like crafting.

Go out and explore... why? there's nothing there. If you get lucky and find something then good luck with the rubbish XP and the couple of gold.

For those that like it. Enjoy your game. For me it has become tedious and stiflingly boring. This really is not an MMO as such. Just a solo fest with a sub.

I think Zenimax will be just fine with 300k in players or even 250K like some here believe their numbers to be.  This game did not advertise "You are not in Azeroth anymore."  Zenimax is a healthy company with great titles...250K to 300K subs mostlikely is very profitable for the company and the single player games in their closet make all kinds of cash.  This game does not have EA trying to use it to prop up other failing aspects of its business.

they are pretty heavy in auridon east march and the rift but not in the lore caves. You can see them pretty heavy in the farming areas running around. They are def bots in 3s usually and you can drag them around mob to mob which is fun to mess them up. But when one dies they warp around the map like crazy and instant res with no ghost its pretty funny to watch but that means there is a cheat program they are using other than just macro botting.
