I think you misunderstood people are not asking for huge plots to be available for every player but that the basic plot be made available without folks grabbing the good lots on safe areas and leaving them unused and barren simply because the system allows that. That isn't much fun no matter what way you want to cut it and unlike real life where you cannot refuse to play no matter what Mrs Marla Daniels says in the Wire you can however like she says "you cannot lose if you do not play" by simply not playing this game.
Originally posted by GwapoJosh Also, F2P people won't be able to build houses at launch.. That will help a lot with the problem.
Which is why I'm confident this problem won't exist by launch. Sounds like land is their money maker. I feel bad for people who paid $150 to get into this game and now have no place to call home, though. I'm happy to wait for open beta or launch.
I would agree in a way, but I think the problem will still exist a month or so after launch. The real problem is that alts can reserve land as well. Yes, there is a tax price for each farm, but it's easy enough to make gold in the game to cover this. So we have the current situation in Alpha were there are massive amounts of empty farms, taken up by squatters. For the alpha it's a real game-killer and I would advise people still considering buying into the Alpha to stay away. You'll quickly end up in the frustrating situation of not being able to farm, and that sucks. I took my time in the beginning and pay for it now as there's nowhere to place a large farm. So.... in a game I was otherwise loving, I'm now feeling pretty frustrated to have my farming halted.
It's a great game, but they need to address this. I would suggest that they limit the max number of farms to 1 small 1 large per account, for the first few months after release.
If that ends up being the case, the smartest thing players can do is not sub until they find a plot of land they want. It will put pressure on the devs to ensure abandoned plots don't remain and/or to open enough servers for everyone to have some land where they want it.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
If you can't find free spots, you're doing it wrong Me and a couple of friends started looking east yesterday and we found 2 spots with space for an easy 50+ big farms!
Off course you'll have to go into the pvp areas. But we don't care, this is how the game is played. Just make sure to move your packs in peace time or have backup to protect you.

thread concerns just fixed.
I think this will really be the thing that kills the game is possibly casual players expecting more and more non-pvp space for housing. It is a game with PvP and you need to know how to deal with that aspect of the game or maybe not sub. If people that are not afraid to go into pvp areas or wartime areas to find housing, then you should be able to as well.

Plenty of people in the east are moving to the north continent; that's why plots are starting to appear.

Except the previous post is BS. I have spent 7 hours... 7 HOURS FFS... combing each and every province in the west, back and forth, on horse, glider, and foot, both PvE and PvP zones (I really couldn't care less at this point where I find one) and there are no plots for large farms. There are many plots which _appear_ to be big enough, but are not because others have badly placed their farms, not leaving enough room for others.
It doesn't matter though, the real problem isn't housing space (though I'm sure that pissed some off also), as others above has said, it is either impossible, or nearly impossible to find even a small farm spot. This small farm is part of the most basic, early game mechanics tutorial, which eventually leads you out of the safe zones, to take the trip across the water into PvP.
If people aren't even able to progress to this point because a lot of asshats are camping the land with empty scarecrows (which they are... everywhere) then there is a problem with the current design.
I'm not saying it's a bad game -- it isn't. It's otherwise a brilliant game, in my opinion. But this is a seriously shitty problem and it should be addressed. I have seen people write that during the Korean and Russian launches, they put a limit on a single character per account putting down farms for the first few weeks. That might help, but I'm not sure it really addresses the problem.
I can actually relate to the OP, I'm a newcomer to the game, know little about it, so own no land and haven't come across any, not when sure what it looks like.
But what is I have found is lots of claimed land with nothing being grown on it, and that seems sort of borked.
My guess is many early joiners claimed as much as they could, likely for future use or sale.
Not saying this is unexpected, it is a sandbox mechanic, and in a full PVP zone I'd be able to challenge them somehow for it, but that isn't the case in the safe areas, maybe that's what really needs to change.

you can claim a land as soon as lvl 8-10. in other terms, just the time to get through the starting quests and get your scarecrow. also there is enough land to claim in the game even as things are.
Just another reason to wait 6 months to a year after launch and see how everything pans out. The only reason I would play this game would be for the crafting/marketing portion of it, if that's irrelevant right now due to space, then there's really no reason for me to buy it.
One problem is that plots can be set down at odd intervals creating a lot of unusable space. Or if you can use it for a small farm you certainly can't find enough contiguous space to set a large farm or house very easily.
Second problem is that it can take a long time for people's time to run out. You can pay a week in advance and then even after your time expires you still have a grace period. So the waiting game can take a week or more.
Third problem is that we cannot directly sell farms and houses yet. I imagine many people moving north would be happy to sell a spot if they could do so easily but as it stands you don't loose much by simply sitting on a spot until it expires.
The housing issue is a fluctuating one. sure it seems like all the safe spots are filled right now, but theres spots opening every day (even every hour). I just got a large farm spot in Falcorth Plains, which is a starting zone. Completely PVP free, and highly populated.
All I did was go around and look at other peoples scarecrows. When you check the info, it will tell you if taxes are paid, unpaid, or if its getting demolished. Find a good one about to be demolished, and just wait. I showed up at the right time, clicked it once to demolish the old, then placed mine down.
There are also a ton of plots still open in the PVP zones. I dont like calling people liars, but if you think the land is full, you are misinformed. Rookbourne basin has quite a bit still left unclaimed, Windscour has even more. And just last night, I found 2 spots in Ynystere for large scarecrows. They exist, just keep looking.
And lastly THE NORTH. You want to talk about available space. Its a ghost town up there. Even the 4 castles that are in alpha are deserted. Now granted, if Oran'Thul actually moved their people up north to the castle like they should, half the land in the safe zones would become open, but since the game doesnt force them to move (maybe something Trion should look into), most of them are staying in the safe zone. BUt theres nothing to stop you from placing your houses or farm up there. My guild has already started a small village in the North and we are nowhere near close to having a castle. Get a couple friends with you, and all go up together, and you will make it.
Anyone who says they cant find land on the Alpha server is just being lazy. No matter how many times you are told, you wont find land in the safe zones, go to the PVP zones, you come here to the forums and cry about there no being land. Trion wont open new servers just so you can be PVP safe, get your asses to the North. Yes this is going to be a problem when the game launches, its what they want. Trion isnt going to cater to your carebear ass, they say it in every livestream, ARCHEAGE IS A PVP GAME. Get used to it, you will die, you will get ganked, and you have to put your farm in a PVP zone. Dont like it, dont play.
Oh and just so you know, there are places in the world marked for one plot of land per account. Its a great place to have a player village, for your guild or whatever, and its limited to one house per account, so you dont have to worry about that guy that has 4 alts, with 4 houses, large scarecrows and small scarecrows, all taking up space next to each other.
I will wait may be a couple months after this goes live and see how things go before I decide for now. I intend to sub anyway even if I play. I can wait to see how the housing is after launch.

If ArcheAge is a PvP game, why does it seem that all the intrepid PvPers are settled in safe zones and the PvP zones are practically empty? Where are all the eager PvPers, lining up to pay Trion money for a PvP experience?
Maybe Trion should leave off affirming on their livestreams about how it's a PvP game and stop and think for a minute about the clear signals being sent by their preorder crowd regarding what type of game people actually would like to play.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
At release there should be more servers that spreads the players but even then if there are say just 5000 possible plots then it would still be hard even on the low populated servers. Wait and see I suppose.
Originally posted by kitarad I will wait may be a couple months after this goes live and see how things go before I decide for now. I intend to sub anyway even if I play. I can wait to see how the housing is after launch.
Then you will be paying a decent amount of in game gold to buy a plot, because by that time all the plots will have been grabbed and the property trading element will be in full swing. There *will* be folks that make early grabs on multiple plots that they intend to farm (or even ignore) early on and then off load for profit later.
I must say though, regarding early points in the thread, I avoided the super attractive obvious hot spots early when I set up my farms and house and managed to get them all in the same area nicely. What I lost by not being next to a quest hub I more than make up with the convenience of having them all so close.
I love the land ownership/ housing system of AA. The acquisition and dealing of land adds yet another layer to an already deep game. it's good that it's a finite resource.
Ok there are various reasons as stated by many of the posters in this thread. One being the server is overloaded because its the Alpha. This is true, but not overly so. Others have said those who raced to 50 got in on the plots first. Well, you could start placing a farm, the small one at level 10. Which is a really dumb rational because it really was about a first come first served. The age of your character has nothing to do with it.
No the number 1 and 2 reasons are; /drumroll
convenience and safety.
The convenience factor comes from easy access to ports, and major gathering areas. The safety comes from stacking up a crap load of trade pack and not wanting to risk there loss prematurely.
I will also say that a large number of plots are where they are simply because when someone got to that stage of the trade-skill quest lines they just put them down as close to the quest givers as they could. Thus new people who are at this stage find that they have to travel into pvp areas (before they are READY) to place a farm.
There is also an element of strategic placement and I have seen lots of posts mentioning this. I would really like to see more farmland opened up only for the first farm quest. It has been indicated land will be added. Versus making the farm plots into this nice neat little grid that some seem to want. That would be really bad for lots of reasons. The number one being the disgusting sameness you would begin to see with each farm area. I am also intrigued by the "real estate" aspect of the game. I would like to see xlgames or trion work on it a bit.

That is a risk I will have to take I guess. If it is so I won't sub no loss really since it is a f2p game.

Just make more housing, there are plenty of areas with no mobs.

I don't think it's too bad even on the alpha server.
Last week I was able to place one plot for me and my alt, and my wife got one right next to mine in solzreed next to the specialty workbench area.
I'm starting to need bigger space though and that is a different problem!
