Yes, this will be a griefer's paradise and PvE players will find this frustrating.
However, death is not the end of your character and you will not lose any items, right? I think that is the current set-up and will be the one on launch. As a PvE player I would love a world not game with all these features I hear about but the PvP aspect has me concerned. Don't come back and say it has a justice system because that is just gimmicky and will not deter anyone. The penalties for dying don't seem severe so it might be manageable. I will be trying this game on launch and see if the griefing can be avoided easily or how much a hindrance to play it really is.
The games been out for awhile now in Russia, Japan, Korea and there is no evidence to your claim of it being a "paradise" for grifers. Its obvious this game is not for you seeing how you have already told us that your a PVEer.
Don't bother playing it on launch day because your goin to get killed by a player and your going to bitch about it. So why put yourself through that. Just stay away. There are plenty of games for you to hop back and forth to.
Im normally a pve player and having a blast playing AA, allready in 3th month.
I don't see collision detection being too much of a problem, unless you're able to block certain entrances or npc player. But that never was a problem back when playing EQ. But I'm not familiar with this games mechanics, so it's more of a guess.
Devs make games the way they think is fun and obviously AA will appeal to PvPers. I think there are probably a lot of PvE players who would love to play in a sandbox. But I've come to the conclusion that AA will not be for those folks. Since I'm one of them, I won't be picking it up.

OP, if you prefer PvE, maybe try Landmark?
There are a lot of pve players in alpha, Archeage allows all play styles in one game and doesn't separate players into different servers. You can avoid pvp entirely in AA and level up to max level, the contested zones have peaceful periods where no pvp can happen. Also the zones are close enough in levels that if one zone falls into a state of war, you can go to a different zone still in peace.
Everything is sold and bought in auction, if you make enough gold from selling goods and crafted items , you can buy anything you need with out having to go to pvp enabled areas. The only thing of value that a player can take from you is a trade pack, you don't lose any gear or inventory items if you are killed by a player. The big myth about AA is that its a griefer haven, it actually is not, if a zone turns to war state and a player kills you, you can rez by a shrine that protects you from pvp and you can port to some other place.
Pvp is still a choice in the game, it just done differently.

The publishers themselves said it's a PVP game period. I think you are sugar coating what the game actually is a bit but perhaps it's not a total nightmare that many possibly might have misconstrued. The justice system is terrible, the sentences are too short and encourage criminal activity rather than discouraging it.
It's very much catering to PVP players. It does offer something to PVE but you have to be careful, have your guild babysit you in certain areas of the map.
I don't see myself returning to the Archeum pack I bought anytime soon but I know I will pop in after a patch is added. It's a shame, the other facets of the game are actually very good.

You can only be faction killed in pvp flagged areas and its your choice to stay there, you can get protected farmland to farm granted alpha is over populated and building space is taken in the pve areas.
You can do trade runs with a guild, hire people to do the trading or buy the design plans off auction to make stuff from the mirage island mall.
You should watch twitch streamer named Bikeman, he doesn't like to pvp and does all pve activities including going into pvp flag areas like the oceans to treasure hunt and deep sea fishing. You don't lose anything from dying on your character. There is a plenty a pve player can do in the game.

True or false: You have to do a quest that is deep in PvP territory just to get a large farm.
And if all the safe zones are full now, they're going to fill up immediately at launch, too, meaning there will be no place for most to put their large farm except in an area where they will constantly be harassed.
I'm not spending my money on this one as it stands now. I don't pay money to be ganker content.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

This game had everything going for it, except for a few things that could have been fixed by Trion asking XLGames to correct them. However Trion wants to lock in game play instead of open it up for players to play how they want and are making the same mistake that many other newer developers in the genre are doing. The main three items the game has going for it along with the main three items the game has against it are listed below.
The things this game has going for it:
1. Many things to do after reaching top level. This is without a doubt the thing that will keep players interested in continuing with the game and keeping a healthy player base.
2. Many new ideas in a sandbox style of game - For example, mounts cast where the mount levels along with the player. Naval combat is another interesting addition to a game where many other MMOs don't have this capability. Also the jail system is unique with the option of repeated jail time lengthening and moving to a third faction.
3. Free to play model that makes sense. If they follow the same model they had with Rift, the game will be affordable and playable by all that either have time or the dollars to play how they want.
The things this game has against it:
1. Player collision - the most annoying thing about the game - players can push other players all across the map if they choose to do so. Even pets are in the way. When there are many players in an area, you bump into everyone and it just doesn't make any sense to have this in the game.
2. Game launching mechanism that is locked in one way to launch the game in an attempt to stop hackers/botters. The players that want to play legit won't attempt to get around this but have to deal with this limitation. The botters and hackers will get around it thereby completely avoiding the very purpose of having Hackshield in place.
3. The English publisher, Trion Worlds has made changes to their ruleset to reduce the player base over the rules they had with their prior games. One of the reasons Rift was popular and still has players is because the rules opened the player base to more than one style of game play. However with ArcheAge, the player is locked into one style by Trion Worlds.
what!?!?! i totally DISagree with everything you said for things against.
1. -i like player collision. i hate games that let you walk through other players, ruins immersion imo.
2. -anything to stop/make it harder for hackers is a plus in my book. (sounds like you might be one imo.)
3.-what? i dont think you have even played Archeage with that comment. its mass easy to swap spec's/playstyle.

Goodbye
True or false? If you want a large farm, the game is so PvP focused that it's going to make you go into PvP territory to do the quest for it?
I think I'll keep coming around this forum and asking questions like this. I'm pretty mad at the gankers lying to the PVE crowd about how it won't be so bad, it's not that PvP, you can avoid PvP blah blah.
Not from what I've been reading about this game by people who have or are playing it. I'll keep popping by, maybe spread some truth and save people some money and some aggravation. Us carebears, you know we gotta look out for each other.

False. While to get your large scarecrow does require taking a trade pack to enemy territory, it is at the port on the ocean not deep into enemy territory and you DO NOT have to successfully turn it in. To complete the quest you just need to get into the radius of the circle marked on your map which would not take you into ganking range from shore. You should have no problem completing this as long as you have access to a speedboat.

So you are %100 safe the entire time you are taking this thing over? Not what I read.
Edit: Okay, went back and read that bit by the guy getting his scarecrow. Maybe he didn't know about the boat? He did get in the circle, got ganked, and got the quest completed anyway.
Still won't help anyone who wants to put up a farm in a safe zone if there are none available on the server. Will be interesting to see how that turns out.

Nope, most likely you will get attacked; going solo.

And if all the safe zones are full now, they're going to fill up immediately at launch, too, meaning there will be no place for most to put their large farm except in an area where they will constantly be harassed.
I'm not spending my money on this one as it stands now. I don't pay money to be ganker content.
Of course not. Open sea is not safe. If you get jumped by another boat on the way then yes you can loose it but its a big sea and they have to catch you first. In most cases, the big risk is port campers and what I am saying is that port campers will not likely be able to stop you because you can complete the quest far before reaching port.

Anyway, it's fine to tell people how to avoid through grouping or lower their chances of PvP, but don't lie to people and say they won't have to PvP in this game if they almost certainly will have to. That's just going to get the Trion forums flooded with tears. Just tell the truth already. It's a PvP game. If you don't want to PvP, play something else.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
Also placing a farm in Pvp zones due to lack of space isn't as bad as it may seem. EVvrything is still safe except for you. So the biggest inconveince is getting ganked while farming crops or while attempting to get to your house. Your stuff is still safe.
Fun little game for those with a house in Pvp zones. If you have an enemy on you. run into your house, let the ganker follow you, then close the door on them. They will be trapt in your house and must port or hearth to get out. While the redemption is small, it always put a smile on my face as they realized what happened.

Most of my characters in WoW are on Tich. Most zones aren't bad, but I know very well how irritating it is to want to do something in a zone where the ganking is relentless. You can't get a damn thing done even though you technically might lose nothing.
Stop telling people it won't be so bad. This thing is going to be free unless you want to buy a farm. While the game is popular, I suspect the free to play crowd is going to get their cheap entertainment by pestering the hell out of the $15 a month farming crowd.
If I seem a bit trollish on the subject, it's because I came here when alpha was announced and read some posts that made me think maybe I could play it and enjoy it. So I got my hopes up and went to double check on other forums. Lo and behold, what I read here was, at best, rose tinted. For those of us who are done with games where what we're doing can be interrupted by some ganker, it's no good, except possibly for a few lucky ones who manage to get a farm in a safe area.

Not sure why you feel I am downplaying the PvP aspect. Believe it or not, I am one of the few that is actually qualified to speak on this subject. Alpha is not a real world example of what it will be like whatsoever. Everyone is packed onto a single server and is hugely over populated. I have 14 months of daily play on live servers. I played from KR launch till about 2 months ago and can tell you that you will be able to get things done once the population spreads out because that is exactly what I did. PvP never stopped me but rather made me think outside the box to get things done when I was playing alone. You cannot just look at what others do in groups and apply that same technique and expect that same technique to be successful alone. You might need to play it safer, take less risky routes for less rewards, do single pack runs during prime time, get stealth and turn a pack at a time in, acquire property at a strategic spots to stage your packs to mitigate risk, etc, etc, etc. By no means would I ever try and paint a picture that PvP is completely avoidable and never a hinderance but if it is creating such a obstacle for you to a point that it will prevent you from playing entirely, it is likely that you aren't being creative enough and are taking too many risks that you cannot support solo.
Devs make games the way they think is fun and obviously AA will appeal to PvPers. I think there are probably a lot of PvE players who would love to play in a sandbox. But I've come to the conclusion that AA will not be for those folks. Since I'm one of them, I won't be picking it up.

There is still four races and their lands not put into the game which will offer a lot more land space and yes the alpha really is over populated. If you actually read my post, all the leveling areas past thirty have war and peace timers. You can level to 50 in peaceful zones. There are pve players playing in alpha and having fun with the game. If someone is getting gank in the game its because they chose to stay in pvp enabled zone, there is lots to do in this game even in peaceful starting areas and it all gives XP, moving to somewhere else to avoid pvp won't hinder progress. That is how pve players are getting by just fine in the game.

Aaargh stop trying to confuse me!
But seriously, I assume you are actually trying to provide helpful information. It just isn't helpful because no one knows whether or not the situation will be better, worse, or the same at launch as far as finding safe zone land.
One good thing: This game will launch free to play. So those of us who simply aren't going to tolerate gankers can come back and see if the rose tinteds or the doomers and gloomers have it right.

The land issue, only subs can build on land after launch, the alpha really is overloaded at the moment and four races starting zones for building are not in yet.
If your caught in a pvp flag zone if the timer runs out on the peaceful period, if someone kills you, you rez at a shrine with an aoe buffer that prevents pvp, you can port out to somewhere else. The ganking only happens to those that chose to stay in a war enabled zone.
Trade packs is the one thing you have to be careful about in the game, you can plan your routes for intercontinental trading that is the pve way of doing it or you can give the pack to trusted guild mates or friends to risk the oceans to trade for bigger pay out. You can also hire trading companies(guilds) to transport the packs for you. Most everything you get for turning in trade packs can be bought with gold on the auction house.
I play the game everyday its not the ganker/griefer paradise where people are slaughtered right out the door. There is a big misconception on how the game really is because of some posts here on the forums. Pve players are getting by just fine in the game.

Okay, thanks for that information. I have no intention of joining a guild and I'm not a social gamer, so I guess if I get interested in trade I'll have to run my own items. Which could be fun. The thing is, I never want to have to deal with PvP when I don't feel like it, which is where my rabid hatred of random gankers comes from.
If it gets sorted out so that those of us who want to farm in total peace can do so, I'll probably drop $15 a month to do it, barring any other pesky PvP requirement (I guess I can put up with one annoying PvP zone run to get my large farm scarecrow). Otherwise, it would be silly for me to spend money on this, because I'd be paying to either not be able to enjoy the game in peace ever, or only for as many hours every day as peacetime lasts.
Guess there is no way to know for sure until launch. Although if Trion really wanted to sell some preorders, a reserved large farm in a zone of the player's choice really would be a clever ploy.
(Dear Trion, if you read this, you can send the check to Carebear Central, Care of Fluffy Flowers Bear.)

Next, as a solo player you will start hating PvE trader guilts. They run only on peace territory and dropping the prizes way down, to basic non profitable lvl, for a solo player.

Why would I hate PVE trader guilds? Unless they Shanghai me and I wake up finding out I've joined them or something. Now that would piss me off. If it's not worthwhile to trade, I just won't trade. If I can't play without trading, I just won't play.

Goodbye
seriously player collision is a bad thing ?
lol everyone who wants an immersive MMORPG wishes for collision ..!
what!?!?! i totally DISagree with everything you said for things against.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
