Originally posted by Nanfoodle This is a loaded question as MMOs are so wonky. I will say this, outside WoW and their giant empire. Im calling WS will have more subs and success then any other MMO after WoW. No WoW killer predictions as IMO only Blizzard can kill WoW.
Do you think that is from large box sales and average retention or average box sales and large retention?
I think this will snow ball and keep players. Its going to win on word of mouth. Not sell 10 mill boxes and keep an impressive 500k to some larger number. I also think gamers will bounce back to Wildstar like they do with other quality MMOs like WoW as new content comes out. Initial sales mean very little IMO.
i dont have a prediction but whatever amount of copies they sell doesnt matter. Check again after the free month to see how many stick with the subscription for x amount of time.
These things are so hard to guess these days with digital sales being a huge part of sales. I certainly could care less on how many they sold though, my purchase was a good one and I'm having a lot of fun with this game.
I don't even know where to start on predictions about this one. It's a little harder to gauge in this case because of the polish.
If I were to go on polish being the sole factor behind success for wildstar, I'd think it would be hitting high marks. On the other hand, I can't ignore the backlash toward typical themeparks that started a couple years ago, even at that point many were at the "not gonna have it anymore" stage.
Today just basing on forum traffic and general attitude it's like people don't even care about them enough to complain about them. ESO being a different case because of the IP. Trolls aren't even really paying wildstar much mind, that's highly unusual for any game around here at launch. Where are all the day one, one post accounts for an example?
ALl that said, I don't even have a rough estimate, could go any way IMO.
I think you're mistaking here with everywhere. Sandbox is a huge buzzword but I don't think it's to the point where mainstream gamers are actually turning their nose up at themeparks. They still launch with the same fan fare as they always have, and the one month tourists still happily show up for every first month to play the IT game.

I think Nanfoodle hit the nail on the head, WildStar will be the 'bounce back' MMO for players. Along that line, I think you'll see wildly fluctuating numbers as players come and go, but a base number of 350k is fairly expected.

Just curious where you got 350K from.

Paying for Wildstar is like asking another decade of WOW clones. Not going to happen for me. MMORPG's have far bigger potential and space for innovation than this.
My wallet is only way I can vote and I voted "no".

Pretty much where this ENTIRE thread get's their numbers... at this time NO ONE knows NOR will anyone know for a few months. Gut feeling is all we have to go on. Anyone else saying otherwise is trying to sell you something.

EDIT: this, for example, is absolute tripe:
"Our guess is that it will launch with less than a million players, but will steadily exceed that number and grow in fan base as positive word of mouth makes it a must-play mmorpg."
"There WILL be less than 10 million players, but it will exceed it's previous expectations and evolve as a 'go to' game as the fan base grows and becomes aware if this title"

I would say mainstream gamers have been turning up their noses at just about any themepark not named WoW for the last 10 years. Sure they're willing to stop by for a month or two before heading back to WoW, but that hardly indicates a love for the genera.

Guessing you haven't played it, or at least past lvl 10.
This game is FAR from a WoW clone. The only thing it really clones is the questing system...which is still made more enjoyable due to how fluid the combat is.
This game is quite a long shot of anything we have really seen.
Did they ever fix the framerate issues? If not I don't see them retaining very many players. In Beta I as getting around 15 fps when I was by myself. In other games with much more demanding graphics I get 60 fps, which I keep my monitor capped at...

This here. There is a reason they are giving f2p passes with every purchase. When open beta was empty they probably knew thay had an issue. They decided not to even offer a box edition either. That's a big red flag. They must of know it would have been a bad investment.
Who know's they maybe able to turn it around with reviews like PCGamer praising the quest system

Or...they're getting with the times. And understand 2 very important things.
1.Digital sales are the way of the future. Why bother with box costs when you can make 100% profit with a digital sale?
2. MMORPG gamers have been burned so bad, not many are left that are willing to pay to play a game without trying it out. Simple solution? Guest pass with each purchase. That way you're not just letting any regular Joe play the game for free, just the friends of the people who already bought the game. That's a pretty smart fucking decision if you ask me.
Also i don't think you realize how good numbers 350k at launch actually is. Anyone thinking this game is gonna top out at 450k is insane however. FFXIV ARR is above even that number.
This game is definitely tailored to the more traditional community. I guess I over estimated how many people were moving to more action based MMOs like ESO or Neverwinter because I see tons of new people spawning up everyday in them. Its led me to believe action based MMOs that have crosshairs are more niche. A rapidly growing niche but neverless, lower in the total # of players. I don't hate the traditional MMOs because that's what I started playing on. Its just my preferences have changed and I prefer mouselook aiming as oppose traditional tab targeting. Guild Wars 2 tried and did very well at bridging the gap between traditional and action based MMO players but sadly the release of ESO and Wildstar has shown us that developers would rather draw a line in the middle and say pick a side. I have to go with my preferences so I will pass on Wildstar. I don't hate it. I just can't play something I won't enjoy.
Started PC gaming in August, 2013. Games played (in order): FF14 ARR ==> Guild Wars 2 ==> Planetside 2 ==> League of Legends ==> Neverwinter (still playing)==> Back to League of Legends for a second try
well i believe it will gain more subs after the release, just cause there were not bad critics. A lot of people are really cautious lately thanks to ESO ...

Once again...why do we care about the numbers? The MMO market isn't bad off enough that we need to run the numbers...instead of...you know...playing?
And no...I don't play WS...too much on my plate now. But I might try it out.
Just can't understand you lot.
Not sure why you even have to ask as the answer should be obvious.
Numbers, be it sub numbers or copies sold, are the easiest to identify metric for how popular, and thus how "good" a game is.

I guess there's still a lot of money to be made on WoW clones, and anyone that states WS isn't a WoW clone is fooling themselves.
If its looks like a duck, sounds, like a duck and in this case plays like a duck (although with some minor evolution of features) then its a duck
I predict interest will once wow releases WOD calling back some of their wondering herds
Not sure why you didn't get my meaning...
WHY?!?! Why the HELL do you care? Why the HELL does it matter? Are you having fun?
You people amaze me. Numbers make you quit if they are low? Sway you into playing if they are high?
Fuggin sheep!
