We need a Wild West MMO! City building, FFA PVP in contested areas. Multiple factions like bandits, pinkertons, and civilians. Horse riding and taming, and of course duel!!
Why are there no longer many (if any) movies made about the Wild West, at time they were all the rage in Hollywood?
Because the recent ones all flopped? Lone Ranger, Cowboys and Aliens ....
In the old days, gun fights with western costumes are exciting. Now in the era of CGI spaceships, super heroes, giant robots, and godzilla, it is meh.
Maybe they flopped because they weren't great movies?
As I recall, both movies were very much anticipated. Then the reviews.
for the record, I enjoyed Cowboys and Aliens for what it was but it was very clear to me that they left a golden opportunity to make something "actually good".
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Originally posted by Jemcrystal It's not just "Wild West." It is anything not Fantasy or Sci-Fi. Take Steam Punk, which I love, but I'm not playing in an mmo where there are no other players. Devs have to capitalize on what is popular with the major majority. Massive Multiplayer means you need a shit load of people on board. So you have to find a theme that appeals to all not a few.
Why does it have to be a MMO?
Incredible Adv of Van Helsing is a great steam punk ARPG with character. I doubt a MMO will make something like that better.
It doesn't have to be mmo just we are on an mmo forum where moderator warnings state "stay on topic." :P
yes, but ..
a) the definition of MMO is up to debate and fuzzy ... so if LoL and WoT are MMOs according to some industry sites, online ARPGs are close enough, and
b) even this place is broadening to cover RPGs (this was discussed some time ago), and non-MMOs like D3, LoL, DDO are discussed here often, so I don't see a problem.
If D3 is close enough, Incredible Adv of Van Helsing is certainly close enough. And certainly if people don't know about it, it is a *good* thing for them to know and check out if they are interested in steampunk.
Ok let's get one thing straight, just because MMORPG is covering the game doesn't mean it's be definition an MMO. If this site strictly covered MMOs there would be like 3 articles a week, and maybe 1 of actual importance.

sure .. the bottomline is that this site is about more than just MMOs, particularly those games which are "close to" MMOs, and online ARPGs certainly count.
I mean, does anyone seriously tell me that mentioning a good steampunk online ARPG is of no interest whatsoever to everyone?

No disagreement here. I would take a good western Online ARPG!
A realistic Wild West MMO would be troubling to many people, and no, its not a question of "political correctness." Consider:
1. For many Native Americans, the Wild West era is seen as the era when they were hunted like game, dehumanized and pressed onto reservations; many Mexican origin people in states incorporated after the US-Mexico war, felt similarly disenfranchised
2. Depending on the time frame, African Americans would have been slaves, recently freed slaves, or struggling as freed people in a country that still did not fully accept their equality (it would be another century before progress on that);
3. Women not only did not have the vote, but laws still treated them in many ways as chattel property
4. Certain European ethnic immigrants like the Irish also faced blatant discrimination, some of it religiously based; let's remember the KKK (which was born in this era) had many targets
5. Child labor was common and few laws protected children
This is not to say good deeds and good people were not present, or to paint an overly bleak picture.
But there is a reason why modern historical MMO's are so rare. They touch on hot button issues which remain battlegrounds in memory and modern attitudes. Look at how many people in the USA still battle over the meaning of the US Civil War. Many companies wisely stick to elves and orcs than step onto this minefield...

What does review have to do with box office?
Do you know how the second transformer movie was universally panned, but it made $836M world wide?
The recent spiderman movie also wasn't very good (i like captain america much better) but it made more than 700M already.

Except they weren't great movies.
It's true that there are good/great movies that don't do well at the box office but "the Lone Ranger"? A popcorn movie like "Cowboys and Aliens" which just screams fun summer blockbuster and if I remember correctly had quite a lot of buzz about it, could have done better.
They didn't flop because they were great movies that were misunderstood. They weren't great movies. And I own Cowboys and Aliens and can enjoy the good bits I I can point out the bits where the movie just gave up.
Those movies you pointed out had a following and people will say they like them and that they are great movies regardless of critics.
How many people are saying the Lone Ranger is a great movie?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
The reason they don't have Wild West MMO's is because it wouldn't be a successful theme park mmo like WoW. Cowboys and Indians for factions wouldn't work in this new gamer generation driven by games like WoW, League of Legends and Call of Duty clones.
Honestly though, the game would definitely be made more a niche crowd of gamer's and game companies don't want to make niche crowd games, there is no money in it. It would have to be made by a independent company willing to gamble in a mmo like this and this is just my opinion
Would I want a Wild West mmorpg, oh hell yeah, will I ever see a serious contender, I seriously doubt it. The gamer generation has always been about fantasy mmorpg's, even the SciFi mmo's are in the minority.

Then don't make it realistic. Games are not for realism .. they are entertainment products.
You don't think the latest CoD is very realistic, do you?
Yeh, i would love that too.
May be add in a bit of steampunk sci-fi to jazz up the action. But even just straight up tactical shooting may be fun.

To the OP,
And this may come off as sarcasm..
