best no monthly fee game you've played and why

shr4pnelshr4pnel Member UncommonPosts: 99

For me it's Rift.

I feel like I'm stealing from them because it's a complete game PvE-wise. It really is a Triple-A MMO that should be sub-based.

The best feature I like is you can level just one toon and you can play all sorts of roles -- healer, tank, mdps, rdps, support, etc. Then you can break down your role into sub-roles like if you're a healer you can be a raid healer, tank helaer, shielder, etc.

Basically, what they did was look at every single MMO on the market, figure out the top features of that MMO, and incorporated it into their game... for free! There is nothing in other games that Rift doesn't have (although other games beat Rift in terms of PvP but that's not their main focus [PvE is]).

What is your F2P game of choice and why?

It is always a mixed bad depending on my mood.

Example EQ2 can be the best but i get bored doing thousands of boring quests,so i then change to a different type game.

ROM was a great game i enjoyed that offered some cool new ideas never seen in other games.

I also enjoyed the fast nature'd pace of SRO,although yes botting ruined the entire game.It was just fun utilizing the freeze effects on creatures, team up and you could really control your fights. Also the Thief/Hunter idea was pretty cool as well .Overall the game COULD have been amazing if a better developer had put more money into it with more systems.

Overall,i would have to say UT99 was the best game ever, you had to buy it but playing was free forever. Not a mmorpg but still the best game ever for many reasons.

    Planetside 2

    /shameless fanboy alert

There's nothing quite like it out there, and it's freee! I'm amazed, I'd gladly pay box price AND a monthly sub for this game. I've been waiting for something like it since I've first heard of that new thing called "MMORPG".

Actually, it's the only game I've been playing "seriously" for the past year or so.

"F2p" is not a simple and straightforward category, I can split it at least 3 different one right away :)

Best games I've played (and still playing) which happened to be f2p at the moment: LotRO, AoC and STO. My main games. (I'd add CoH, but it's gone now. Great game, went f2p, but the chosen model was pretty meh...)

Best f2p game (as in not a converted one, one which was designed and built as f2p) I've played: dunno, maybe Neverwinter.

Best f2p model in a game I've played: Rift, hands down, with LotRO on the second place since I was a former subscriber.

    CONQUER ONLINE BABY!

1.0 though.  Best OW PvP systems, Most skillbased pvp requiring pinpoint accuracy for some skills,  Most fun community for friends, rivalries and drama,  Best form of a market, Proper balancing method (hardest class to play = most OP class when played well.. The way it should be), Best guild systems, Best chat system (bigger deal then you'd think), Very unique progression allowing you to reborn into other classes and use skills from each, And so much more.

    HOWEVER

Once again I'm talking about CO 1.0.   Conquer is the only MMO in existence to get worse and worse with every single patch to the extent it has.  Every patch has come with more greed making the game more and more pay 2 win to the point where now literally no other game  matches the amount of rl cash necessary to be worth anything. Known p2w MMos like those published by Perfect World look like a charity compared to today's conquer. This is as well as the last 3 classes requiring less and less skill but being more and more Over powered with enough money put into them.  This game has gone from the best MMO I've ever experienced to the absolute worst.  Unless you're trying to play a classic private server or drop thousands, yes thousands of rl dollars on a game, stay VERY far away from this one now.

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

You almost have no choice these days but to play a F2P MMO, even if you Sub.

That said, Rift has the best F2P model out of any other game IMO.  I love that I can go back any time I like and progress, all without subbing.  When I get serious about it again, closer to the coming expansion, I'll probably Sub again.  But just for the perks, not out of necessity.

Definitely disagree here. Tera has the best F2P model. Tera doesn't make you pay $$ for  new classes, Rift does.

  • LuidenLuiden Member RarePosts: 337

It's not a MMORPG but by far it has to be League of Legends.  You never have to pay anything and can play the entire game for free, they don't prompt you to spend money every time you log in or spam you like other games.  The fluff is there if you want to pay for skins but beyond that, you just play and have fun.

There is a reason why something like 30 million people play it across the world.

  • JaedorJaedor Member UncommonPosts: 1,173

It used to be LOTRO until I unsubbed and discovered what all the hollering was about. Now I'd say Rift. The entire world is available and not gated behind a paywall, so you can quest and explore all you want. Crafting is also available to everyone, as is the ability to create your own build from a mix of three souls.

There are some things that engage a paywall, but they are not required to play the game all the way to cap and raid at least casually. The more hardcore folks will require the soul packs from the expansions, so that will cost. And there are some quality of life things like extra bag slots and access to the auction house that you can pay to obtain. But you can grind out every expense in the game and never pay a dime of real money, so I'd say Trion's F2P method is very good.

Just clearing up the facts for the folks at home..

Rift doesn't charge for new classes.

They charge for new packs of souls (1 per class) as they are released.  That is entirely different than charging for new classes.  There are a combination of 10 (or more?) souls available to build each class in Rift.

Just clearing that up because your statement was misleading.

That's being nitpicky, but the truth is you cannot play those new "souls" without buying them.

Played the game for little over a year from beta into release, yet it was still sub based though I did really enjoy the game.

Just lost intrest because the things I hoped for and would suite the sandbox style very well was housing. Have no idea how the game is today......

As for OP, I did play RIFT for about about 4 months and really have fun playing but it wasn't given me enough, besides during allot of singleplayer games came by which made me end playing RIFT.

In the specific case of Rift that is the worst part for me. I love variety and versatility in every class and they nailed it. However, They added everything to a single character because they didnt deliver a good experience in the character progression/leveling/story. I prefer to have different characters of different races and have a different leveling experience with each one. That doesnt happen in Rift because you do exactly the same things with every character so they had to make up with class versatility. I believe they could have had both but they didnt bother. Now its too late.

I dont have a best f2p game. But kudos to Trion for making one of the best conversions to f2p.

    "Official game" - Atlantica online

it can be totally F2P but you need to buy licenses for ingame money. If you would buy them via cash shop it would cost like normal subscription.

You might as well be asking me who the most respectable politician is. F2P has not ever and will not ever impress me.  I've tried so many of them and none has made me think it was a good experience.  Althought, it does serve a purpose. To allow me to determine if a game is worth paying for. I have tried a few F2P games where I later chose to subscribe. SWTOR being one that was good enough to make me sub up for a few months. But even then, I can't see myself playing without a sub. As far as the F2P stand-alone experience goes......NONE!

The new souls can get ingame with out paying for them, but trading in plat thats ingame gold for the souls as a trade for rift.  and is not hard to do, very easy to do at max level. So making people pay for the news souls is not true at all when can get them in other ways with out going in to your pocket.

What they said and I want to add that everything you can buy in the shop you can buy in the auction house too. Cosmetics, keys that give you cosmetics, choppers and gametime (+xp/pvp currency gain) too.  I havent paid a cent for this game, I did one or two of the free credit surveys to get extra char slots and the chip limit removed.

Pretty fair for a f2p imho

@Boneserino, check the ptr. they are working on the "so so combat". At least adding more diversity with the mutation changes and reducing the burst dmg of skillshots. No more op debuff-debuff-3-shot-kills with a sir shotgun.

Rift by a mile (Tera has an excellent f2p model too but i dont like the game). Sure it has its problems but for a f2p game you cant ask much more comparing with the current mmo market. I like p2p but if f2p was implemented as Rift then i wouldnt have any problem to play f2p mmo's tbh :)

Probably Runescape Classic back in the day. It was one of the first F2P games in the West and I feel it did almost everything right about the model: the free version wasn't very limiting, and subscribing gave you content, not power. Nowadays it would probably not grant you content but leveling speed  or something similar instead, like in Eldevin, which really annoys me. There were no content packs or other nuisances, and paid servers were separated from non-paid ones.

To be honest, I don't think I've played any other good F2P games. LOTRO was an OK game, not great but playble before becoming F2P, but then even though I am a lifetime subscriber, I feel the game became worse the instant it went F2P - and indeed changes were introduced that made it unplayable for me later.

    Obviously Rift

It is the only MMO that you can fully play free (almost, you have to pay £5 for full AH access)

Everything else is just a con

I thought I'd be the first to mention Marvel Heroes, glad others feel the same way.  This game introduced me to ARPGs.  It's the first MMO since SWG to have me totally absorbed for long stretches at a time and the first F2P I've ever played that feels like they've nailed the balance between stuff they give away for free and stuff that I'm happy to buy.

Honorable mention to Rift, though truthfully I preferred it more back when it was P2P, right around Storm Legion's release.
