Some of you are confusing "linearity", with "sandbox".
Linear Progression = single pathway to progress (usually leveling).
Sandbox = having building tools and/or having creation tools.
Alternate pathways to progression isn't what sandbox means.
Archeage does have alternate pathways, but that doesn't mean it's a sandbox mmo.
In Archeage, you cannot create, or build, in a "sandbox" environment. There isn't unrestricted Terraforming, or manipulation, of either the environment, or the content. There is only pre-determined "plots" that you can manipulate, with farming and housing, and it's very restrictive.
In a real-world sandbox, you have "tools", such as, a shovel, water, bucket, etc. The sand can be literally formed into your own creations. The only limitations are real-world physics and your imagination.
In virtual worlds, or MMOs:
"Sand" = content.
"Box" = environment.
If the "sand" cannot be manipulated, in the "box", it's not a sandbox.
I hope i cleared some misconceptions up.
(and yes, some of you will disagree, but that's okay.)
Maybe you should learn a little more about the topic. You can plant pretty much anywhere in Archeage, you just don't get the benefit of government protection.'
Eve and Ultima Online didn't have terraforming either, so... not sandbox?

The constant flip flop of trying to define what a sandbox is or isn't.
One guy throws out a definition.
Another guy points out how it doesn't work for every game.
Its almost like we're trying to use a single label to describe complex systems that cannot possibly be summed up with a single word.
Its much better to not try. Now onward with the infinite and eternal unsolvable argument!
according to wiki and other sources I have read (which I do not agree with) GTA series is a sandbox. Well fine, if that is what they want to call it then we all need a word to describe the other games that make GTA series and ArcheAge look lineral. I dont care what that word is but that word has to exist.
that is my take on this subject anyway.
"Sandbox" shouldn't be used for MMO's the way it is for single-player games.
After all, playing in an actual sandbox with friends creates different dynamics than playing by yourself.
In an MMO the sand is shared, so what becomes of prime importance is how you are allowed to shape other people's game experience.
I find the term "sandbox feature" much more useful than "sandbox game" in MMO space, because one can easily make a precise breakdown of which features enhance your impact on other players and which don't. (eg terraforming, farming, OWPVP, auction house, collision - YES, instancing, questing, vendors, phasing, cut scenes - NO)
Any attempt at a precise cutoff point for entire games is going to produce nothing but ideological flame wars.
Alpha buyer here. No It is not a sandbox. just because it has some unique features doesn't make it one. I've seen some theme parks, that make no claims to be a sandbox, that have more territory.

i think its sandbox
I love this argument. So simple yet so compelling.
I think i'm actually swayed.
I change my vote to "i think its a sandbox" as well. Honestly its probably the best way to argue the matter.
