Another game where people are telling you that you have to get to a certain level before you can start having fun. Great. Terrific. And it's ONLY level 30! Also, the combat does look pretty bad. I'd probably agree with the OP, but since it's f2p I'll give it a try.

It does suck.
I think this was the whole thing Anet was trying to combat with their "endgame starts at level 1" slogan they had at release.
Its strange to have you play a mostly single player quester game for 50 levels and then totally change the game into something where you don't even run quests anymore after that.
But people like their level progression and I guess they just didn't know any other way to do it.
The first 20 levels are pure mechanics introduction. It is not really the 'game' at all.
If you already know the game mechanics, getting to level 20 could be very quick. If you don't, well you ought to play along and pay attention to what the quests are teaching you.
You honestly need to try and get to endgame or even 30 + and find friends to play with, if you are going to play alone, it won`t be fun, you have to have a guild and good friends to get a lot of the stuff done.
You can go anywhere you want over mountains, plant farms where ever you want. search for treasure (though treasure hunting is lack-luster because they are static spawns). I can`t stress finding people to play with enough though you`ll enjoy the game 100X more.
The main issue i have with Archeage is.
They boast about having 120!! Different class combos (which isn`t a lie) but there are about 8 combos that are actually useful or good, when it comes to pvp, all you see is, Primeval (archer), Darkrunner(2H Rogue type), Templars (paladin type), pure healers and daggerspell (glass cannon mage), and there is no time to kill, the PvP is purely about who can stun first and 1 shot first. PvP needs a lot of work.
I`m currently a level 50 primeval.
Yes there are cookie cutter builds just like with most games (no matter how open the skill system is).
Still there is something to be said for same class variance as far as chosen skills - so you can have 5 paladins but their skill loadouts could be different.
Yes, very good point. but still 8 out of 120 is pretty far off is what i was getting at. I mean you can`t deny PvP needs a lot of work there is literally next to no skill involved. This is how it is on my primeval. I go stealth>Get concussion arrow opener>I Win. I get caught not in stealth>Get stunlocked>die in split second. Literally that`s how 90% of my fights are

You can literally get to 30 in like a day. and when you are leveling from 1-25 or so, its basically like a tutorial you have to learn everything there is to know...And there`s a lot.

I'd have to disagree. If you want to be relevant in open world PVP without stealth, then yeah, you better get a gang, like every other OWPVP game. But if your goal is to be a 1v1 end game God and master craftsman you can solo it just fine.
....

I'm suspicious of how true this is in situations other than 1 on 1. I'm not saying certain combos aren't OP, I'm just thinking there's a lot of groupthink that gets propagated. Besides the OP classes are always next up for the nerf bat.

Personally, that's statement only rings true for PVP.
For other sandbox elements, the game takes off in the teens, right after the 2 hour combat demo that 1-10 represents.

Still sounds like a cop-out. Why not stop wasting players' time and give the game a tutorial and then fill those 20 levels with meaningful content instead of excusing it by saying "it's working up to the good part"?
There should be no level requirement for fun, nor should there be anyone picking out arbitrary numbers at which that fun starts.

Well if that's true, it's good news for me at least since the sandbox elements are why I'm interested in the game at all anymore because the action and leveling just looks tacked on. Isn't 2 hours a bit much though? The combat doesn't seem very deep.

Well I certainly respect your experience then.
That said, aren't they in the process of raising TTK? Seems like it would be a wise move given no one wants to be killed under stun-lock.

I don't think its true at all. I could probably name 9 or 10 viable melee builds off the top of my head. We do see a lot of Primevals but its not because they are the most OP or only viable class. I think it is group think as you say.
I've seen a lot of people saying how daggerspell is viable now after 1.2. yet it wasn't really buffed that much from the previous version. I was doing the same things before the patch on my daggerspell as I do after the patch and having just as much success.
Everyone plays Primevals and darkrunners. But those builds aren't really any better than Bastions and Hexblades. Stone Arrows, Shadowknights, Shadowblades, Doomlords, Eidolons, Blade Dancers, Dreambreakers.. People are playing these other builds and doing great. They are perfectly viable.

Keep in mind that you pick one power set at 1, one at 5 and one at 10. Kinda big decisions to make.
If I had a bunch of alts I might find that 2 hours dreary, but on my first toon the hand-holding tutorial stuff was useful.
At around 11 you get your first Blue Salt Brotherhood quest and your garden scarecrow. That's a huge step. Not long after is the legendary banana run for the large farm, which is a massive game-changer. Be bold like me and do it in your row boat! ;o)

Yeah they are in the process of raiding TTK and im crazy excited for it but as it stands its just a 1 shot fest. even full tanks are capable of being killed in a matter of seconds, by ranged no, but a darkrunner will split a tank open like a tin can.

You`re right other build DO WORK but only vs specific types but the common class choices work against multiple diff types. take stone arrows for example (Tanky archer, for those who don`t know) are really only good against primevals, but against any other class they will almost certainly get beat, whereas my Primeval can fight a plethera of difference class combos and consistantly come out the victor.

I think you and I are just going to disagree on this one.
Take a Bastion for instance. When a hexblade gets you locked down in an imprison you're probably toast. Granted if you're a good player, and I believe you if you say you are, that will rarely happen. But when it does the Bastion can still come out on top and your primeval likely will be toast. The bastion isn't especially weak in other fights either.
Primeval has a lot of advantages, but a skilled player playing a stone arrow can be just as viable in 1v1 fights. I am of the opinion when talking about specs like Primeval vs Bastion vs Stone arrow the main difference in how they perform is going to be the skill/knowledge of the person playing it.

every class in AA has its anti-class, on top of that classes that are strong in 1vs1 having hard time in group pvp, also dont forget the amount of weapon choices u get, also combos between classes. PvP is extreme fun when u got couple of specs and classes to play with.

I can't agree that every class has a counter. Daggerspells for instance dont' have a strong counter. There are more than a handful of classes that you can take to a 1v1 arena and know that no matter what you come up against, if they have relatively equal gear and skill you have a fair chance of winning. From my time in 1v1 and watching others 1v1 I feel some classes are countered by others, and some are just generally strong 1v1.
I think the notion of counterclasses is something that just isn't as strong in Archeage as some games. Probably because everyone has the option of picking 2nd or 3rd class that minimizes the weaknesses of their main focus.
I do agree with the rest of what you say. A skullknight for instance is probably one of the top if not the absolute top group pvp spec but can have a hard time in 1v1 play.
If a game isn't fun from level 1, in my opinion the developers failed. Games are played for entertainment. If you are not entertained from login, the game is failing at its sole purpose. I may just stick to Destiny this weekend...

Apostel or Builder will do as anti-class for Daggerspells. Anyway i was very surprised how much group pvp in AA depends on right tactics and people in a group cordinating their classes.

WoW's as bad in vanilla, Neverwinter the same,Lineage 2 was pretty bad, EQ 1 threw you out into the world with no clues what to do, SWG had a tutorial then go hf,etc, etc, etc. Not saying it is the right way but nor should a vestal virgin come to you upon login to guide you and offer pleasures to make you cream your pants.
