OP and I had a pretty similar experience, though I think I played a lot longer. It got worse and worse and worse until I just couldn't stand it any more and uninstalled. Just thankful I didn't pay for the damn thing.
I can also name plenty I dislike about many games. I cannot name 1 thing I liked about Archeage...like I said, downloading was okay, I guess...
Again, Im not a fan of ESO. I understand that that's all you got on your minds, but please give it up.
Here is a list of the games I enjoyed more than others so you can give it up:
Anarchy Online
A game with very rigid class builds and only 2 factions. Also tab target like ArcheAge but the combat in ArcheAge is better. I did like the futuristic theme with mod implants and lots of weapon choices. To much typical instancing for quests.
TSW never tried
Age of Conan played a short portion and found it ...not my style but interesting
Ryzom high fantasy....almost got into this but EQ and WoW kept me.
Mortal Online this game was such a huge dissapointment to me. I got into the very first alpha stuff then beta and finally release....and still the basic trade and sales and other basic things didn't work correctly at release. the crafting was supposed to be interesting, but it gave unlimited bad options and a few good ones for making something. PvE combat was not impressive. PvP was just strange. The whole thing felt like it was a botched 11th grade programmer group attempt at a game.
WoW vanilla This game was quite good for it's time and I sunk many hours into it. It is also tab target combat with quests and an auction house and arena combat. Wow's big draw was always the dungeon groups and raids and gear chase. That is part of the difference with ArcheAge.
DC Universe comic book characters running around in underwear...not my type of game.
FFXIV Wanted to play but I heard such horror stories about a big release of one of the Final Fantasy's that I could not give in to try it.
(Does RUST Count?) No clue what this is.....is it even considered AAA?
Those are my favorite MMO's I have played....notice ESO is not there...can we move on now?
My comments in Green . Also I tried ESO beta but I have a personal problem with games that are supposed to be immersive and you can't even swim underwater.
I can also name plenty I dislike about many games. I cannot name 1 thing I liked about Archeage...like I said, downloading was okay, I guess...

Give AO a pass....it's old as dirt and was one of the big 3 to come out at the same time (EQ, DAOC, AO) so things are pretty outdated, but it was the first game to introduce semi-instanced dungeons, Flying mounts (i think) and the skill allocation system was like college chemistry.
Mortal Online had it's flaws, but the graphics were good, I actually liked crafting ALOT in that game and since I knew it was a PVP game (and I dont PVP) I just stayed in a city killing at the graveyard and crafting. Did alot of travel too, but like I said, PVP not my thing, but ended up playing this game for about a month.
Ryzom is probably the most original game that came out at it's time and still might be. Mobs would migrate according to weather and you could create your own skills by combining ones you've leared. Mob placement was AWFUL, but it was an old game
FFXIV had it's first version 1.0 which was the worst game ever created, but they hired a new guy Yoshi P. and he made A Realm Reborn with the same engine and new staff. The game is far and away better than the first attempt, but it is tab target, combat can feel slow to some, but the story, atmosphere and dungeons are pretty awesome. Still subbed and playing.
Rust is setup like Minecraft....there are player made servers. You begin with a rock and have to build everything from axes to rifles to houses. It's a very addictive game and there are hardcore PVP servers and PVE servers. I stick with the PVE. It's got MUCH better graphics than Minecraft and is more geared toward mature crowds.
To be honest, I just can't take this review seriously, or pretty much any other review structured like that. People lose sight of a few fundamental ideas when critiquing a game by breaking it down into parts. Mainly being that no game is gonna have it all.
This can be applied to anything people enjoy for entertainment. Bands/artists have to have an identity and a target audience. There's no musician out there that can literally do it all. They focus on what they like and other areas will be neglected. Sports teams, they function like a machine with many moving and interchangeable parts, not unlike a game. There's no such thing as a perfect football team or baseball team, you try to develop your strengths as a way to cover up your weaknesses.
People go into these games looking at this area or that area, based on wherever they came from or what they find important. You can't realistically sum up a game by its parts. It has to be experienced, you have to see how those parts work together. You certainly can't get a reading on that by looking at them all individually. Eventually everything is going to come together, and that can only happen by playing and experiencing the game.
What looks like a poor choice early on, can and often does make sense later. Or it becomes unimportant in the overall scheme of things. The way that the OP reviews games, and a lot of people handle it, is akin to watching a baseball game, in the top of the 1st, seeing the leadoff guy ground out to shortstop and the 2 hole hitter strike out, turning off the game and saying "this team sucks". That doesn't say anything, except clearly you're not a baseball fan, and probably did the right thing turning it off.
OP I'm glad you found out early that you won't like AA as it saves you time and money. That said this review isn't that useful to someone who needs information typically gained from reviews. Four points? There is much more to an MMO than that. I too was disappointed by the static mobs and linear questing of the starter area but recognized other things that were really well done.
What about the mounts and how detailed the animations and movement are?
How about the flexibility of the class system and how bonus damage is given to skill combinations?
The physics engine it has?
The flexibility of using any armor and weapon types no matter what class combinations you decide to play?
The realistic boat movement?
These are things not typically seen or not done as well that can be witnessed in the first hour or two of play. I had the exact opposite experience you did as I noticed how much attention to fine detail there is in AA in many areas. Just moving around on a mount speaks to this.
Just out if curiosity what would you expect to see from a game that speaks to the whole game world as soon as you log in? I know your opinions are your own but it doesn't seem rational to label a whole titles game world by what you see as soon as you log in.
My comments don't even speak to the bigger game not seen in the first hour or two. Can you honestly tell me of another title that allows so many things to do? Maybe raising crops, sailing ships that can fire cannons or write music and play it in game?
I can also name plenty I dislike about many games. I cannot name 1 thing I liked about Archeage...like I said, downloading was okay, I guess...

you did'nt even play the game long enough to know anything except your shallow and hasty remark about mob placements and such. you really have no idea what the game is about - That is what bugs me about your review and any other reviewer that has'nt put in the time or effort to review a game. The wife and I played the shit out of AA this past weekend. It was a pleasant surprise indeed.

You don't understand what a review is, do you? It is someone's opinion about something. Opinions are not right or wrong. They are biased by nature. A reviewer can attempt an objective approach, but at the meat of things, it's scored on how much he liked the reviewed aspect.
I played the game for 8 minutes and was not once having fun. I don't play games in a hope that they become fun at a later time, as that is a waste of time. If a game is not fun just after login, then the game is failing at the one purpose of playing a game just after login. This is a failure in development.
That was my review. My opinion. It may differ from your's but neither are incorrect, as they are opinions.

The first 8 minutes in any mmorpg worth it's salt is not even enough time to get your bearings and sort your graphics / UI settings etc let alone have any fun...

I'm sold enough to check it out based on this comment alone. Every single game I've played since SWG has had this pathetic restriction....role Class A? Then you can only EVER use weapons B and C. Role Class E? Then you can only EVER use weapons F and G, oh and if you role Class A or E you can only EVER wear armor M....
Insane level of restriction for the sake of cookie cutter class balance has always been a lazy design choice imo.

Sorry if I used inductive reasoning to come to the conclusion if the initial experience looks cheap and sloppy that the rest of the experience more than likely will feel this way as well.
To be honest, I just can't take this review seriously, or pretty much any other review structured like that. People lose sight of a few fundamental ideas when critiquing a game by breaking it down into parts. Mainly being that no game is gonna have it all.

Terrible analogy btw. Here is a better one. Playing AA can be compared to watching a Pee-wee football game rather than an NFL football game. It’s immediately clear that those “running the show” don’t have even 10% of the grasp on things as the real pros do.
I never pointed out any one thing that I might like or dislike (cept mob placement, but that’s like a disease or virus in a human…the human is all bad because the virus is in them).
The entirety of the experience was reminiscent of the many Asian grinders I had tried over the years. AA was actually the one I played least. I even played Swordsman for about 6 hours before losing interest. This game does have a lot of different parts, parts I never experienced, but like I said before, utilizing inductive reasoning, I came to the conclusion that since the starting area was so awfully constructed, then it was safe to assume the rest of the game was as well. After all, it was all built by the same hands.
I can also name plenty I dislike about many games. I cannot name 1 thing I liked about Archeage...like I said, downloading was okay, I guess...

Yeah I get it, opinions are like that
For example, you slate the game world / graphics / combat etc whereas from watching the youtube vids that I have done I think the graphics, visuals, animations etc look perfectly fine...
Mob Placement 0.1 – The mob placement when I got in game was insanely terrible. It was downright lazy. Just a cluster of the same mob all in one place so you could just keep hopping down the trail and completing the quests.
Game world 2 – the minute I stepped in the game world I knew where I was….another horrible FTP game that has nothing to offer. The game world is plain and boring…there is nothing that stood out whatsoever.
Character and creation 4 – you get to do some pretty good work on the face, but nothing else. No height adjuster so everyone is the same size. Character movement is typical of a FTP grinder and the combat graphics aren’t much different. Feels very stiff
Combat 4 – Combat animations are standard fare, sometimes overdone, never underdone. You cannot avoid attacks by movement which is something almost every new MMO has installed. The issue is that this new design feature that most mmo’s now use seems like an upgrade and one that should be implemented in any new game if you are a good developer, so it really feels like lazy design rather than deliberate strategy.
As a whole I had heard so many good things about this game, but the minute I stepped into the game world I felt as though I’d been fleeced. The game was reminiscent of any other Asian grinder with no real rhyme or reason to anything, poor implementation of everything and lazy design implementation. On top of all this there is a cash shop that will be needed as seen with Labor points, which happen to be something that should automatically set an alarm off in anyone’s head.
Did I play long enough to actually be able to make a fair review? Yes, the game wasn’t just “not my thing”, or “good but not great”, it was downright terrible. Didn’t matter how long I tortured myself for (I did it for 3 hours). This game should be used for interrogation purposes.
I think its a matter of your personal preferences, what in the end you look up for.
I agree to some of what you said, but im in closed alpha for some months already and may have had a different aproach to the game, so ill judge it slightly different then you.
For example, the quests, i barely have done quests for the last months, but thats because i dont like quests at all and as you said already, the quests in AA are just there to be done, what you forgot to mention or could not experience yourself was, that quests in AA only make a small part of the game. Its like a component, an option you can do.
Its meant to get up to max level in short time.
You saw the gameworld as hub for quests, but its not.
There is plenty reasons to return to your starting area wit your max level.
AA needs you to open your mind for what YOU wanna do next.
I cannot share your points when it comes to the gameworld and grafix as i think, its the best we have actually.
Have you tried to find tree's to chop down ? Or mined nodes or gathered anything that could be used for your crafting ?
Proof me wrong when it comes to a world with nearly no zoning or borders where you have a whole ocean to explore hidden islands or treasures in the deep, where you can fly a glider, have a galleon with cannons and radar, have a complete playercrafted market, the list is endless.
Nevetheless im as well full of critics, especially since the 1.2 patch, were Trion has all hands full to do to make XL building the Trion changes into the game.
Character creation is a religion for some people.
For me its just that and i dont care too mutch about being fat or tall, but i share the opinion about "cheapness" on every corner.
On the other hand, there is so many more corners then in any game i have touched ever (30 years active computing here).
The combat system shares the cheapness as well but is also only a part of the game and to be honest, for me its good enuff to have fun and the feeling i can master my own skills on that system.
After all it is a asian grinder, but for my taste it delivers best for my preferences because i live freedom of choice and i prefer grinding over "kill this, kill that" and even there you have extra hidden quests.
At all, a lot is hidden in ArcheAge and i doubt you can judge the game right in 3 hrs.
But yeah, we dont need hours to feel if we like something, or not.
Rawfox, thanks for the input, that was actually a really good synopsis. I know there are lots of things to do in the game, but I truly think that AA did itself little favor to introduce people to its world with the starting zone they chose. Even if there were no quests, if AA is much better than represented in its starter area, than it did itself a disservice.
The "end game" tries to be an open PvP sandbox game with trading routes in enemy territories, guild castles in wild lands and a pirate faction. Also, you can focus in crafting and being a merchant, but the system is very poor and lacks of appeal. It is not about killing mobs, quest lines, dungeons/ bosses/ arenas/ battlegrounds (it also has these).
Problem is that the start of the game suggests you that the game is the same themepark you have played 100's times when it really is nothing related to themeparks.

My comments in Green . Also I tried ESO beta but I have a personal problem with games that are supposed to be immersive and you can't even swim underwater.
Stopped reading there... Can't even follow your own rating system lol
It's got MUCH better graphics than Minecraft and is more geared toward mature crowds.
dry humor doesnt work on everyone....sorry
Maybe raising crops, sailing ships that can fire cannons or write music and play it in game?
you did'nt even play the game long enough to know anything except your shallow and hasty remark about mob placements and such. you really have no idea what the game is about - That is what bugs me about your review and any other reviewer that has'nt put in the time or effort to review a game. You cant review anything w/out knowing the product in and out - you played for about a second comparatively~

My opinion. It may differ from your's but neither are incorrect, as they are opinions.

its clear that it is YOU and not I that does not know what a review is. To review something you first must have knowledge of the product which in this case op (or yourself for that matter- 8 min, what a joke that you are even speaking!) does NOT have. He has simply given a rushed opinion~ period
You are once again misinterpreting what you are reading. I reviewed my 8 minutes of gameplay. He reviewed on what he saw. I never once said the game was bad. I never made any over-arching judgements. I simply said I was not having fun for the first 8 minutes of gameplay, and did not want to play in the hopes of having fun later, as there are games where I can just log in and have fun instead.

How ridiculous.
The first 8 minutes in any mmorpg worth it's salt is not even enough time to get your bearings and sort your graphics / UI settings etc let alone have any fun...
"The flexibility of using any armor and weapon types no matter what class combinations you decide to play?"
I reviewed what I encountered and never pretended otherwise...he reviewed what he encountered and never pretended otherwise. The bottom line for me was that upon the first 2 minutes of the 3 hours I spent playing the game, it was easy for me to see that the game was developmentally flawed from the first piece of code to the last.
never did I try to review something I had not experienced. But the experience I did have completely stopped me from being interested in moving forward.
Sorry if I used inductive reasoning to come to the conclusion if the initial experience looks cheap and sloppy that the rest of the experience more than likely will feel this way as well.
After all, it was all built by the same hands.
stopped reading when i found out you cant even spell the game you are "reviewing" (lol).
Which was in the headline. i guess i didnt miss anything.
Using my inductive reasoning, I had a complete opposite reaction to playing ArcheAge, and will be playing it when it is released.
In short you (op) do not want to play ArcheAge. That is fine, I hope you find something you enjoy.
Yeah I get it, opinions are like that
For example, you slate the game world / graphics / combat etc whereas from watching the youtube vids that I have done I think the graphics, visuals, animations etc look perfectly fine...
