It really depends on what they do plan to do. Combat is an activity. One that takes a lot of time in many MMOs. They would need something to replace it, or multiple somethings, that could occupy our time. Whatever replaces it would need to feel like a core aspect of the gameplay and simply not a timesink to keep us in game longer.

if you made a good MMO based around cars, where you can tune, modify, race, hold racing events where you can block of roads and the cops can get called in.... maybe to some degree, letting you design body kits to sell in game or like mechanically minded people can tune / modify other peoples vehicles who arent mechanically minded.. like a real life sorta sim with cars.. that wouldnt require combat.... but i mean almost like real life type modifications and tuning, down to needing to change tools to undo parts in the engine bay etc... it would be pretty intense.. but i think it could be really awesome too

I like it. This is this kind of thinking/discussion I was hoped to spark.
really just about anything can be made a video game as long as it has interaction with some level of depth.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

on a good racing mmo where i can modify my car and all that, as soon as someone calls the police there will be combat involved. Highway fights trying to make the bastards crash lol. If its violent, its combat IMO
I would be extremely interested. I was looking recently for a decent MMOs with interesting theme without combat, but with no luck. MMO that could actually help to develop you spiritually or intellectually, something like TSW without zombies, but with all the investigation quests leading you to the discovery of the secret of the universe. I would dive into game like that.

i suppose, you could also bring violence into it i guess, allowing you to steal other players cars when you kill them full open world PvP... but that could end up turning into a massive sh*t storm.. i dunno, i just want an amazing racing MMO... the crew looks alright, but i dont think it'll have the level of depth i want.

I have a friend who fights with his expenses all the time because he likes to fix up motorcycles, tear them up, build them back up again. I often wonder how he would take to a video game that allowed him to do the same

Now this is sounding more like "Deathrace 2000" (Points for killing pedestrians and such.)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Does there really need to be a racing MMO? Most modern racing games have online play options. And if you make it interesting like Death Race 2000 then you are right back to having combat.

none of the racing games have what im talking about
There's already been a few. Even though it's past it's time and on the down hill slide, MYST ONLINE comes to mind. No combat, has puzzles and makes you think.

Since you said MMO, there is nothing out of ordinary in that statement. There are lots of genres that do not include fighting, sims, racers, puzzle games, platformers etc. Any can be turn into a boring massive multiplayer, and any will find few people that will like it...
This thread is 2 pages deep, and some have supplied "lists" of non combat MMOs, yet so far nobody has mentioned second life?
For a forum community that prides itslef on being extreemly knowledgable about MMOs, to debate the merits of "need for speed online" and yet not once acknowldge second life's existance, is quite amusing.

Is second life actually a game? I remember it being all over the news about 6-8 years ago and companies dropping absurd amounts of money on advertising there- funny times.

Yes...yes it is...and is prob the the most successful and popular "non combat MMO" ever released.
I was thinking about Second Life but it does have combat in sections. Then again it has everything you could think of in certain areas. I would like a space exploration and galactic trade game without combat. Don't the Sims have an MMO?

I think the game has 1 million paying subscribers today.
Its been around forever, I think the small team is making enough money that they really dont care to advertise.

I would say "no combat" is not a game. Don't tell me what is NOT in the game. Tell me what is in the game.
