Not sure about this bit about SWG

"The actual crafting mechanics themselves aren’t exactly innovative"

I think that you will find that it was very innovative for the time most mmorpgs did not really have much crafting. Maybe UO but I cant conmment on that as I never played it.

Infact the SWG system has not been matched since. We will see how the crafting in The Repopulation turns out.

Form me I guess the list would be as follows.

    1. SWG

    2. Mortal Online

    3. Vanguard

    4. Fallen Earth

    5. Darkfall.

1 and 2 are a cut above the rest tho.

    Mine -

    SWG, Vanguard, Ultima Online

The ones I've had the most enjoyment with.  I will always miss SWG and hope one day to have similar experience with a crafting system.

Final Fantasy XIV - was alright,  each item had  a chance of failure depending on what you did.  Just wasn't that fun for me.

DarkFall - Had that sense of danger if you didn't have a clan or friends to collect resources with, though it wasn't innovative.  Eve was same way, I just never experienced the crafting.

ArcheAge - looks interesting, just Labor Points get in the way of me doing it myself.  Which promotes socializing or having a collective to work with.  Though not sure how player driven everything will be.

    To OP,

FFXIV crafting over SWG for the #1 spot?

Though I understand it's your personal opinion, but REALLY!?!

I will let it go this time :)

What SWG is not placed top 1 ?

This is one of MMORPFG's jokes i guess lacking any credability...

SWG had the best crafting ever, unmatched since that golden Era of MMORPG's,

by a long shot and miles ahead before any other MMORPG..

Guild wars in a crfating competition list ? is this a joke ?

THE true LIST of best crafting In MMO is rather this :

    1) SWG Chef

    2) SWG  Armorsmith

    3) SWG Doctor / medical crafting

    4) SWG Architect

    5) SWG Droid engineering

    6) SWG Bio Engineering

    .

    .

    .

    10x)  WURM

    10x) UO

    10x) Vanguard

I just love the mini game crafting is in ffiv. Love all those skills you have just to craft, cross class skills too. There was a period I became obsessed with it.

List fails without Pirates of the Burning Sea. Totally underrated game with simply the world's best crafting and economy system ever.

Also - what's with all the fan service for FFXIV? What am I missing? I downloaded the trial yesterday and ran up to level 6, and I was bored out of my friggin mind. Combat is so brutally slow that I was practically ready to gnaw my hands off to escape the game. And I don't even like combat, but that's all there was besides run from point A to point B quests.

Lineage 2 was with the best craft system before the game ruin in half  scifi and craftin become a 99% unusable

Why do you write an article about something you don't even like. Bound to fail...

I never played FFXIV before, but what you described there sounds exactly like Everquest 2's crafting system.

ahh yes crafting in MMO and not including EvE

this is a game that without crafting would have no ships, and the rest.

It definatly sounds like 5 games i like that have a crafting system, I mean adding in GW2 - you may as well go full hog and add wow, - mine ore / click button > magic item appears.

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.
Use this code for 21days trial in eve online https://secure.eveonline.com/trial/?invc=d385aff2-794a-44a4-96f1-3967ccf6d720&action=buddy

it isnt at all - first of all eq2 system is realtime while ffxiv turn based and eq2 system is about reacting (well sort of, if you just run eq2 system w/o using single skill, you do quite often successfully finish item anyway) while ffxiv system is about planning and decisions.

my top five (kind of, since i put similar craft systems as one) would be:

     ffxiv/vanguard

     swg/ryzom

     atitd

     free realms/puzzle pirates

    repopulation

FFXIV's crafting system is convoluted, unnecessarily involving steps of "crafting" in a mini-game.  Not to mention it's a static system with no item degradation with your standard theme-park style loot.

Whereas SWG had all of the above with much deeper crafting...

I'd rate FFXIV's on the higher end of theme parks, but my god, no where near the top.

    Agreed...

I really miss Fallen Earth!  /sigh

It had such a great community.  Real shame the devs had to sell it off to Gamers First, who ran it into the ground like all their other games. :-(

    Such a shame.

Age of wushu/wulin has a pretty good underrated crafting system as well.

    Are you kidding?

POTBS had a closed, intra-guild crafting system where there was next to no real external economy or need for one. The crafting/economy was one of the weakest parts of the game, where you had to sell resources at a loss.

If you think Pirates of the BS (not an inaccurate name) had "the world's best crafting", you have never played another MMO, let alone one with "actually good" crafting (pre-nge SWG, Eve, Vanguard...).

    No, just no....

SWG shouldn't have been on the list at all since the game is dead and buried.

Fine. So the author never played Wurm online, I get that, its niche game for... crafters mostly:)

And GW2 being on the list just made this text lose credibility beyond "my humble opinion as an author of the text".

Istaria and Wurm deserve to be on this list, SWG is there too by default but the rest... is themeparked waste of time.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

SWG #1 and the only real meaningful crafting system ive encountered in the genre and ive played almost every tite to date. the reason being EVERY item was player crafted and a little thing called resource QUALITY! it was cool to see the skill of crafters on the server go from making composite armor that had 20% resistance and was too heavy to wear even while fully doctor buffed (could also be the quality of doctor buffs was lower) to seeing composite armor that had 90% resistance (rare and expensive all all hell) but still required a doc buff to wear.

Have you tried FF14's crafting? It's the best crafting system I have played since EQ2/ FFXI. I have heard stories about how awesome and complex Eve's crafting is, but it's been so many years since I played Eve I can't remember if I even tried it or not.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.

    This.

Back when I played it, I hadn't seen anything like it.

Also, why is FFXIV:ARR on the list, let alone #1?  The original game had a more in-depth, realistic crafting system.  The new one has far, far less materials and is more for the casual MMO player, hardly like the original.

GW2 isn't anything notable either; the only unique thing about it is how to discover recipes.  The whole crafting system outside of that is just like any other MMORPG, ala WoW.
