Comparing P2W vs. F2P is the wrong basis argument. Free accounts should always be at a disadvantage because they are free. Period. The real argument here that most people can't seem to articulate is this: The marketplace (buying things with cash) provides a boost over SUBSCRIPTION PAYERS who don't pay extra. That is, in my opinion, the real frustrating issue here.
If I pay a monthly subscription as does someone else, but I also decide to drops lots of cash on marketplace items that provide boosts to my progress and the other player does not do that, then I have a method in which to advance in certain aspects of the game faster than that other player. That is unfair to that player who is also paying the same subscription as I am, but can't or doesn't want to drop a LOT more money on marketplace boost items.
Explained another way, why should a subscription paying player not have the most optimal chance to progress as anyone else, limited only to that person's willingness to put time and skill into the game?
Why should a subscription player need to pay a subscription AND buy marketplace items to "keep up" with others?
For those of you that claim the marketplace items have little or no effect consider a few key items:
Yes it does get expensive to do it day in day out. But Trion, just like other MMOs are banking on that 2-5% of "whales" that will spend hundreds to get ahead and stay ahead.
Again, if I'm paying a subscription like everyone else, why should even us small percentage of people be allow to have such an advantage over the subscription payers?
I don't care who gets the advantage over the F2P crowd. They don't even count. But those paying a sub I expect to be the ones with premium status. I don't think subscription payers should be second class to those who will pay hundreds on the marketplace to stay ahead no matter how few they might be. It's an insult to subscription paying players to even allow it.
Leave the marketplace to things like clothes and more interesting pet classes. Limit it to things that, no matter how much you spend, that don't speed your progress even if temporary. That is how you make it fair for subscription paying players.
Treat subscription payer as if they are the customers to keep, not the whales. Otherwise in the long run you will lose subscription payers and be left with 1 whale paying your bills for every 99 players left that will only do F2P and end up dying like every other MMO that fell to the same mistake.
Troll away if you will, but I feel my argument is a very valid explanation of why many of the items allowed on the marketplace will frustrate those that have every intention of paying for a subscription but unfortunately know that they will still be at a disadvantage because Trion will allows the whales to have the advantage.
And for the record, if I decide to play the game upon release I will be one of the 2% paying for lots of boosts. I'll do it because even $100/month is not much to pay for spending 100 hours/month playing a game. I'll do it because I can. I'll quench my thirst upon on the tears of the subscription payers who cry that they can't afford paying hundreds of EXTRA dollars to keep up. And I will still dislike the ability to do it. And I will still hate that Trion choose to force us to go down that path. But after all, it is what they are banking on--that like it or not enough of us will just live with it.
By me
Agreed but they need to change the description. It is not F2P. It is Freemium. F2P is F2P + Cash Shop with cosmetics. Period.
Subs and F2P players cannot exist and they will never be able to exist in an open world PVPVE environment because it is mathematically calculated to lead to imbalance from the get go. You either go for sub or you go for F2P. You don't mix both worlds to suck all the cash you can think of from both worlds. It will drive a large proportion of the playerbase to quit simply because they cannot keep up. So what if the F2P hardcores of the hardcores 1% will still play it?
Do you want money from F2P crowd? Simple.
Have one dedicated team to design,
F2P players LOVE better external appearance on everything. As simple as that. Would this game benefit mostly if it was sub-only? Of course not. Not a chance. Why is that?

The legendary 1.0 controversy - http://archeagesource.com/topic/1704-korean-retail-general-news
Because they fucked it up. Instead of following the vision of the game by the Devs and releasing its full potential, the CEO(s) of XLGames decided to strip away its sandboxness and exploit the core aspects of the game to be sold through a cash shop.
Consequences? It got dropped from 5th position in Korea to 35 and now it is 40+ (I think). And what are we going to get in EU and NA? A different version not only from Korea but also from Russia (there are no inventory slots in the Russian cash shop i.e). Top it up with the flood of bots/hackers, ect this game will get for the obvious reasons apart from lack of anti-protection, and you have got what? Add one of the most idiotic introductory levels from 1-30 of "X kill rats" and I can guarantee you most people into sandbox will quit before reaching 30. Is it because it is something hard to reach that level? No it is because they cannot be bothered, literally be bothered to go through the same shit again they have always done in a themepark.
Think of it this way. You go to a club that advertised a special Trance night. You go in and your hears start to listen to Pop shit. You wait for an hour. You start drinking heavily and 2 hours have passed. By the 3rd hour you say "Fuck this shit. I am done". Do you think that he is going to wait all night to listen to Trance? Of course not.

I was with you all the way until you got to the above part and ruined what appeared to be a well written and objective post. Why? Because the leveling in AA is insignificant at best. It has been repeated over and over ad nauseam that it simply serves as a tutorial that introduces the player to the many in-depth features offered by the game. If not for that "tutorial" you would be saddled with ten times the whining on forums with players complaining that they do not know what to do, or how to do, anything in the game. It is a harmless and short lived necessity. It also serves to increase the player base by enticing those PvE players who would not normally play a PvP centric game to try it. Granted the majority would not stay, but a small percentage might and that is a percentage that you would have otherwise not had. Only those with an agenda, such as the hardcore PvP player who hates quests and PvE, would find issue with it. It is shortsighted, at best.
If you have such a low tolerance for quests that you simply can not wade through 30 levels of quests that can be completed in a matter of a day or two, at best, before you start playing an excellent game that has the potential to bring you years of entertainment, then you have only yourself to blame for your inability to find a home in an MMORPG. You PvP types seem genuinely frustrated with MMORPGs but the fact of the matter is that MMOFPS's and MOBAs are your best bet to find the type of entertainment in an MMO that you are seeking. All the stomping and whining in the world won't change that fact.
Laced just to clarfiy,
I LOVE quests. I LOVE grind. But what else do I love?
This is anecdotal;
I played EVE Online for a bit. I said "fuck it lets see what is this all about". Granted I was lost in space, literally. I had no idea what was going on. I didn't know what to do, where to go, how to play, how to move, I was completely lost. Granted again I have never played space-simulators before let alone an MMOrpg. However, it was my first time ever that I was thrown somewhere with no expectations, no guidelines, no arrows. I had to communicate through a helpline global chat in which GMs (can you actually believe GMs still exist? I didn't!) and veterans alike gave me all their insight.
What did I learn in the end even though I left within a month? I was shocked, so shocked to see the beauty of not knowing anything. It was such an exciting feeling. It was like playing my first MMOrpg. Immersion as its finest for me. So my point was for the ones who were "sandbox or gtfo". You know what I am saying?
In Korea in 1.7 I think they have improved the situation with that. Actually know that I am seeing it is is awesome. Seriously watch it, it blows.

You have missed the whole point of the labor points.
I know it is different and without playing with it for awhile it is hard to see.
Been paying patron since Russian release it is a very good concept that I feel will spread more and more.
Does so much for the person who does not play 24 hours a day and helps with the impact of botting.
I am not criticizing the concept of labor points. Just like in EVE you have a fear-factor system (more hardcore yes that is true) it is fine to have a limited concept. However, LP should have been character bound and not account bound and secondly LP pots should have not exist through cash shop.
Let time, decisions and skill decide who the LP gain (as well as a revamp so it is balance) gets what. From farm to whatever. Not cash. So they should have gone straight for F2P. Not a hybrid, not freemium.
Bots will be an issue. We already know what is going on. Users have posted from Korean to Russia. Trion needs to put GMs (Hello) in-game as well as implement better anti-whatever system.
You act as if people wouldn't do this anyway if this cash shop didn't exist. People are always going to find a way to get an advantage through rmting, it happens in every game whether it has a cash shop or not. If some guy wants to spend hundreds of dollars getting an advantage in a game, then he'll find a way to do. Shady chinese gold sellers/and many of the other ways to rmt (i won't get into detail about any other methods, but they do exist).
its going to happen regardless and at least this way the money is going to the developer rather than some random websites pocket.
No, you are missing the whole point.
There is planty of gold bot in P2P games, in every one of them, they can afford subs and more, do you seriously think that the labor points reduce their effectiveness in this game? No way in hell.
Im going to tell you, the one that gain the most out of it is the gold sellers, after comes the people with multiple account, then there is the poor little one account sub that try to keep up and there is the freeloaders completely left in the dust forced to either put some cash in or just quit really...
If you have one subscribed account and i have 3.... According we do the same thing with our labor points, who the hell do you think get the most advantage here? Chances are, i will get to craft much nicer gear 3x faster then you will and chances are that i will own your face and camp your house as much as i want. Thus reducing what you can craft even more and gaining even much larger advantage....
Now you can say that this is a guild game and blah blah blah.... But your guild wont camp ur house 24/7 and either way, ill catch you alone again and then.... well you got it.... own ur face.
You people are so silly, dont have a mind of your own, no logic.
Edit: This game was FIRST DESIGNED for a pay to win model in mind, in its orignal country its purely 100% pay to win. And yet you got all them fanboys trying to defend a system (LP) that was MADE for gold sellers and money grabbing tactics... Good god people are stupid.
If you like the game, fine, happy for you but for the love of god stop being so stupid.
Thank you for a great post. As I mentioned in another thread I think that this company got over zealous in monetizing this game.
Here is the link to what you get for $15.00 per month.
http://www.archeagegame.com/en/news/2014/06/archeage-patron-program-apex/
For those that don't want to follow the link here is what you get for $15.00 per month.
"Before we discuss how to get it, let’s detail what Patron status means in ArcheAge. Patrons will enjoy the following benefits:
• Bonus online Labor Point regeneration (10 per 5 minutes)
• Offline Labor Point regeneration (5 per 5 minutes)
• Increased maximum Labor Points cap (5000 maximum)
• 10% bonus to all Experience gained through combat or labor usage
• 10% discount on Marketplace purchases (available after launch)
• 5 Loyalty Tokens per day for use in the Loyalty Store (awarded on first login of the day)
• Ability to claim land by placing farms and houses
• Ability to pay in-game taxes on owned property
• Ability to post auctions on the Auction House by default"
You are not getting much for your $15.00. You still need to buy storage space and basic stuff from the cash shop.
If they included a little Cash Shop Currency as a stipend with your monthly subscription this might have made it a little more palatable.
This is such a shame . I was looking forward to this game for the last 2 years.
This was the most anticipated game on my radar. Unfortunately I refuse to pay a subscription, then being nickled and dimed .
I am not disappointed with the game in general. I have no issues with the LP system.
I was looking forward to a game I could play for a few years.
Guess I won't be playing this one either.
http://www.entropiapartners.com/?r=22415
You will be missing a great game.
Well on the bright-side ...you didn't have to pay the usual $50-$75 to buy the game and having 100 storage spots per character is a pretty good start for me ,,it's not like I can't build storage space in my house

Who gives a $%&%^&*$* if someone pays a sub and spends money in a cash shop too? This is what it all boils down to for me.
I don't give a flying fuck if someone wants to spend more cash to get to where I will be quicker ffs grow up.
WhatI I detest if fucking retards that go to a F2P option game and whine and fucking moan they can't get what a sub paying player gets
My feelings exactly.
Whether its spending money in the cash shop or having more free time....there is always a bigger fish in the pond. Not everyone is or should be equal in mmorpgs and im fine with that.
Enjoy the game or dont.
Even without a cash shop, most of the people railing on the game would never be on par with the top players anyway...
In all honesty most people railing against the game sound like people who've never worked for a living and forget that time, any time, can have monetary value ergo it is up to you if you think your time is well spent with or without a sub and with or without cash shop items... it goes to your definition of fun basically and if you have enough free time and ambition to make your goals happen in a game which allows it of you or if you feel you would get a better deal from paying a little extra to boost your way there. Is this wrong? I'd say no because games like WoW, EQ 1, etc never gave you a choice it was either grind or be left behind and AA gives you the option, however grindtastic it may end up being (hinges mostly on players not the devs as they will be the ones trading cash shop currency for gold), to play utterly free and get absolutely everything in-game (from patron to whatever CS items there are, legalized RMT will mean there will always be people selling cash shop currency, years after being put in the dilithium exchange still has quite decent offers, is this wrong? for a asian gold farmer yes, for everyone else it means direct player input into prices of gold per cash shop currency and profits heading the right way).
People that bitch about P2W in this game are the ones that feel there should be no legal bypass for the grind they may have to do forgetting that a majority of people that have cheated in the past (via buying gold, powerleveling, etc) never get caught and thus end up taking a hefty chunk of the profits from developers and give them to either 3rd parties or friends (if you believe otherwise I will say just this much: you only get caught if you're stupid). Is it wrong from the developers to want their money back but also not turn the game into a P2W travesty? (which I will repeat again: this game is not, you can earn everything in game with time in dedication it is just your choice if you spend that time or spend a fraction of the same time earning the money to just pay it) No.
The one thing I will say though that the detractors are right about is that XL moved Archeage slightly off course from the sandbox area towards the themepark one but the likelihood is they won't maintain that course after they see which parts of the game draw people to it and keep them there.
Sadly I have to agree, The micro transaction's have already put me off this game as a sub player, Had hoped this would change before release, I may log in just to use up my free patron time.(but then again I may not).
Sad panda
You sir win the post of the month. ^
People are not seeing it no matter how good you explain this to them.
They forget that almost any mmo has some sort of cash shop where all nice things are behind a paywall.
They forget they every mmo that comes out now will have a cash shop.
Thing with Archeage is that its almost on par with Eve Online, you can grind gold buy patron trough APEX.
You can own a farm and house if your friend adds you to your family.
You can have the best posible gear in the game trough crafting yourself or your guild crafter.
Tons of things are getting changed like gear identifying with labor removed.
But you cannot argue with people who refuse to see it and want everything for free and handed to them on day one without doing any form or effort.
Or playing this mmo like they should be playing in a solid guild that work with each other, working together for having nice stuff.
These are mostly self entitled greedy human beings who think they matter for some reason and are worth more then the majority of players and or people.
They are making stupid post like "i cannot open my ingame mail" "Labor is pay to win" its hilarious lol
Think i must have ignored like 40 of them, these are not the ones with having concerns or not liking the art style,or wish it was a little less pvp heavy, or want subtile changes, these are people throwing around tantrums like 5 year old little girls on every mmo they see and dont plan to play.
Pathetic realy lol.
And you cant even respond to them with equal words as you are the one getting banned on MMORPG.
Wich is kinda sad that these moderators let these people keep comming back instead of deleting their accounts and ban them.
It has nothing to do with hobby's anymore, its like a madness or illness that people have to hate.....
So much hate its not normal anymore....
It makes it hard to enjoy comming to these forums and share your passion with like minded souls.
There is nothing wrong with having a negative vieuw on some parts of the game, but its so wrong that the same people are keep making post full with hate and false information to make an mmo look bad.
But i gues this is ok on these boards as they still continue to do that day in day out.
Very well articulated...
I was never in top echelons of power back in SWG pre cu or cu as I simply didnt have as much free time as some of those players....wow that must mean SWG was terribly unfair and clearly P(lay)2win....
But it was never an issue, I had my own goals, accomplished them in my own time and I enjoyed the game regardless....
Yeah I love how those railing on the LP system tend to leave out things like how Trion are trying to remove LP cost for opening quest rewards for example....or how players can regen 25% of their LP pool once a day by sleeping.....
What the hell is this thread? Some guy made a thread out of a reply from another thread?
Game is "Sub to win", get it right.
Its funny how you reply to someone agreeying with you but wont bother going against any of my arguments because you know very well that you cant break any of em. Here is how you sound like.
Governments should legalize drugs because they are losing a lot of tax money because its being sold under the table, further more, why blame the gov for wanting to make more money from what is being sold on their ground.... Like really are you serious bro, is this really your logic here?
Now, maybe you are used to get into games that are on the fence to be p2w or simply used to enjoy free to play games because your broke idk... Personnaly, i played every single big title that came these past many years and ive never been so disgusted by a cash shop, not because i have never seen a game with a more p2w elements but because AA is an open world sandbox and IT DOES NOT FIT INTO IT. Saying something is allright because every other game does it is just stupid wrong and besides its completely false, most game are far from that, especially at release and they are just themeparks.
Like i said many times and i will repeat since you apparently cant read properly. I DO NOT care for how much an mmo can cost me, i just dont want to be reminded constantly that i need to pour more money into it for every single aspect in a game... Oh damn cant craft today, need to put more money in...wtf...REALLY?
All of you defending the game being themepark only for the first 30 level but its a whole bunch of bs.... You can go on your own at any point but chances are that you will finish that quest line up to 50 anyway. Why? At 50 you cant do a lot of things without running out of lp anyway and the other features, as much as i enjoyed them, gets old. Eventually you will need money or want to do something else than pvp all day.... Especialy since there is no incentive to pvp. Once your house is settle, that your guild castle is settle, that you sailed a bit and scuba dived, your left with very little but a need for some pve grinding or questing. Which btw is terrible in this game, pve is deadly boring along with the questing.
I got to 50, had multiple 50s, i was in alpha since day one. Seems like a lot of people talk a whole bunch of nonesense here.
You like the game, fine like i said but stop spreading false bs.
Thing is that labor regen for anyone, the way you spend it all or save it up is totaly your choice.
You can buy labor pots in the cash shop or buy them for some gold from the Auction !!! they are realy cheap !!!
You can buy a month subscription for gold !!!
You can craft the best gear / wear it / then sell it if you choose to as its not souldbound / Bind of equip !!!
You can join a family and farm for mats !!! spread the use of labor points !!!
Quest rewards with labor indentifiying is going to be gone in or before open beta !!!
There are tons of changes comming to Archeage to make it even better !!!
Many people seem to miss the point of playing this mmo together / be it with friends or with your guild and progress at alot faster rate.
They only see what they want to see or read false information and think there are no workarounds for specific things you can do.
There are so many ignorant post by people who have no clue how to play Archeage lol
Its a joke to read some of these posts over and over while the truth is totaly ignored and you can get away with almost anything if you stop playing this game SOLO.
its realy terrible to read trough the Archeage forums and read all that crap people do not understand or are not willing to understand
I didnt bother reading past missing the point playing an mmo together. You cant excuse poor game mechanics by saying you should and must play with others otherwise you are an idiot. No sir, you are.
If i have 3 account and you 1, chances are i will own you face with better gear/pots/food. Now place this in your ``guild``. Everyone in this guild has 3 account each and another guild has 1 account per member, who the***** you think will win. According these people spend as much time as the other in game, use the same strats and are same lvl minded.
If you give the benefit of the doubt to any guild, the guild that will spend the most money in the game will win. Especialy when you will need to bid on the right to invade a castle during siege time... Who do you think will win these bids uh? The poor guild people, or the rich kids? Who do you think will own castles uh?
Oh boy you dont know very much about this game uhm.
I play mostly pvp games and even i found the crafting mechanics to be restricting and the pve deadly boring... This game wont make much noise in the west and if it does, it wont be for the right reasons. It wont last.
Yes it is completely up to you to save your LP or not and that causes another problem. Some days i am pretty busy irl with work and so on, i just cant log in just to avoid reaching 5k lp and letting all further lp go to waste. Not only that but you need to log in every so often to take care of plants and so on, spend your lp to avoid reaching limits on your busy day. Why avoid reaching limits and wasting lp? On off days when you have planty of time to play, you will lack lp but when you are busy irl, you will have too much of it that it will go to waste and basically your losing precious ``time in game`` that you will never get back.
Lucious.. you are somewhat right.. but, BUT Dihoru and the other are right, too. They have a point, and i will show you what point it exactly is.
You can take any P2P game of the past without a cashshop. And for the sake of comparsion take one with level depending pvp.. let's take Asherons Call Darktide server.
Now pay as a whale a bunch of little chinese player to power up. Let say you power up 8 Characteres everyone played 24/7 from 3 little chinese. Or how you thought the max level first from any MMORPG released was accomplished? And now let them play a month. How big, how huge do you think that advantage would be after one month?
Now.. as a whale you could play occasionally with 7 of your friends those 8 overpowered chars to rule the world.. and when you and your friends not playing those little chinese will still powering up your chars.
And basicly.. ArcheAge offers something similar to that.. but it is and was always possible in games with vertical progression and enough money without a cash shop.
Ok.. in Asherons Call you could say that you by yourself could play 24/7 for month with your friends.. but can you really? No, you can't.
And that problem is as old as the genre. Solutions are
- do away with any vertical progression
- introduce a very fast reached power cap(max level with gear/level reached extremely fast)
Nevertheless a lot of people don't like those systems either.. because they feel there is nothing, or not enough to accomplish.
The EvE time based system is a rather good system to avoid that, too. However that system do have their faults, too.
- starting later in game will you always place you in some disadvantage
- skill != money and you do have the same problems with that as with any other games progression. Though the usefulness of money is limited
Edit: And back to the Asherons Call Comparsion. The power difference would be even bigger their and for a longer time, even if you and your friends would be extreme hardcore gamers playing 12 hours every day. And how many of us can actually play 12 hours every day? I can't.
The same would work in EQ1 PvP Server, DAoC, WoW Vanilla or almost any other game with pvp and vertical progression.. and as longer and with more power gap the vertical progression was the worst could that be.
Are you realy that daft to see the big picture ?
Play how you want to play be it freelloader or patron or patron with 15 accounts.
I dont care and i travel with my guild that has been in all the great mmo that offer competitive pvp in both sandbox and themepark.
We do stuff together as a community, in Eve we live in a Wormhole in Archeage we are going north and claim land.
We have dedicated crafters who we send mats to, so we are all getting geared up to the teeth in the best posible gear as all crafted gear IS NOT SOULBOUND AND CAN BE TRADED TO YOUR FRIENDS WITHOUT YOU EVER HAVING TO CRAFT A SINGLE GEAR PIECE <------------Can you read that <------------ Sir look again <---------- Now read it again <-----------Just to make sure incase you missed it------> Dedicated Crafters <------ Crafting all our gear <------ Crafted gear is not SOULBOUND <-------
We use our labor (both patrons and non patrons to devide the labor limitations by working out the most efficient way to get every single thing as fast as posible for everyone involved.
What you gonne do with your 5 accounts again sir whine alot ?
Melt my face ? me a poor patron with 5k labor limit ?
Ah thats right even our freeloaders are geared by the time you guys have crafting on a good skill.
Oh and uhm incase you missed it Sieges are capped with 100/100 sir so bring it on m8.
This is why Archeage is so damn epic
No, an entire guild will own your face. Mix an hardcore dedicated guild that is also pay to win and you ve got a real problem right ahead. Problem being? AA being half of a sanbox with open world is amazing but most people wont enjoy being camped at their house by an entire p2w guild of which they have no chance to beat even if they bring every single good soul willing to help within the area.
Im a pvp guy at heart and i was there in many region fights, defending lowbies and all. I went against an entire guild at some point and it was admitedly fun, the challenge of finding a way to kill them one by one was amazing. But then it was easy to guess that if i were to be p2w and decent at pvp, i could easily take on greater challenge and believe me or not, your guild wouldnt save your smart ass.
You are mistaking whining and just being real. The game has some solid features but soo much bad things about.
just by the way you are writting i can tell you are very young and delusionnal. You dont think with your head or have any objectivity. Your just amazed by all the things you need to explore and learn in the game, you havent reached 50 yet, pretty sure.
I am just gonna ask an idiotic question now: How can you, a solo player, P2W? There's nothing in the game to allow you to have an edge... Hell with all the moronic things you said you missed one small fact: LP pots being around means that not only the super hardcore guilds can "P2W" but any guild, what does this mean pray tell? That BiS items will become common? And then how do you pay to win as a guild? Oh you can't big freaking whoop di do. I can always tell someone's full of shit when they start calling others young and delusional (may want to check your spelling on that word).
