It's pretty retarded of them to show so many work in progress, it just turns down a large part of potential buyers. No matter what they do now, the ridiculous lion will be still shown on the internet and scare people even way after release.
And looking at it realistically, they won't change much of what is already made anyway. It would be better to just show the finished product and hope that the final tweaked version will be at least bareable enough for players to buy.
The whole idea of advertising games at the beggining of their production process, making people play games half finished etc. is making them lose a lot of money. The stupid approach of "wow, we earned back what we spent plus a bit more, a success", while no one thinks, "we could earn five times as much if we did it right".
And the critic is not towards resolution, or number of polygons, technology has nothing to do with it. It is all about design, they are making something pretty unappealing, but for every art there is a crowd. Just sizes may vary.

For all the complaining on here about the art direction, its not going to hurt the amount players EQ Next will draw in. There is a cartoon mmorpg that still has millions playing it ten years later.

That's not because of the graphics, it's because of getting children addicted to a purple colour.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
I get that people like or don't like certain art styles but why try to make it seem SoE is messing up? There has already been many points made, even by the art lead (who also did EQ), as to the technical reasons and advantages of the chosen art style.
How can the graphics indicate the level of passion shown by the developers?
Everyone has their own opinions about what they like but if SoE doesn't agree with you why come with all these excuses? It looks suspect.
C'mon guys, lets wait and see more of the game before passing judgement.. All I have seen so far are some screenshots and a little bit of the Landmark video play.. The real challenge will be how the rest of the game views and plays.. Will the underground caverns feel eerie and chilling? Will the Dwarf city (assuming there is one) feel immense and majestic? If the game world graphics are unable to awe me, or effect me in any way, then YES, the graphics fail..
So far I have not see much that awe's me about EQN.. I want to see what Blackburrow looks likes (that original EQ zone scared the crap out of me).. Kaladim better look like something out of the Lord of the Rings movie, or there will be hell to pay.. LOL
You really notice that these guys are strictly following budget/trend.. for end term profit.
Technically a female is in charge and has been for all the games and her style reflects in them all, tech has just changed. Popular games across multiple genres are mostly the stylized/cartoon ones. Makes most sense to not move away from this.
EQ3 trying to copy WoW.. probably fail.. cant see myself playing a childish game i played back in 2005.. its been a decade.
Honestly feel sorry for people like you. You must hate Disney-Pixar movies as well? I'm a man that doesn't cry, but I sure watched Frozen and enjoyed it. Glad my inner child is still going strong after 32 years.
No worries though, multiple adult realistic games on the horizon, I'm sure they will all last 10-15+ years...

Allein, for some ppl WOW was their first "mmo" so they think every other game is modelled after WOW.

Because it just doesn't look that great, because it looks too much 'copied' from somewhere else that its hard to imagine that it was done with passion, but just to order, and tbh, it looks very much like it was done on the cheap.
And yes i totally hate the art direction, it looks naff and totally not what i would expect from Everquest, this game is really not in the same genre as the original Everquest, a game i played along with many friends for several years, that the game is still going today is testament to the strength of the original game. EQNext just looks naff, its too much about gimmicks and not enough about substance, and it shows this too much in the art style of the game, so yes, i certainly don't think it displays any passion.
The last game that even began to show any true Everquest 'spirit' was Vanguard, and even in its half baked unfinished mess, it had more 'soul' than Everquest 2 ever had, and it looks like, more than EQNext is ever likely to gain. SOE seriously needs to take a close look at EQ1 and try to understand exactly what it was that made it such a great game, but i really have to wonder if they have the ability these days, i just see EQNext failing as hard as EQ2 did, and it really makes me wonder whether SOE can make an Everquest game anymore.

I don't get the complaints at all. These looks miles better than anything in EQ or EQ2.
I don't know how to say this nicely so i'll just say it -
EQ characters have always looked terrible. Not once have they ever looked decent or respectable. They've looked worse than LORTO character models, which is saying something. These are better.
No matter what they do now, the ridiculous lion will be still shown on the internet and scare people even way after release.
disagree - tony the tiger will get dismissed as an early tech demo prototype
AFTER an updated Kerran is revealed
There is an updated Kerran concept art revealed in the Landmark race workshop design document.
I personally have no issues with the graphics style they are using and after playing Landmark I think they actually made a really good choice. The style work very well with the their voxel world design and animation system. Once you play everything feels right.
As somebody who loves the EQ world and lore it sad that although I will of course try the game. I am not expecting it to be for me.
The graphic are not my thing but I maybe able to get around that.
What i am going to struggle with is this BS limited action set system. I don't want to be strait jacketed. Give me 101 abilities, as many hot bars on screen as I want and let me choose which to use and how many i want to use at a time.
LAS is rubbish system that is designed just to give developers responsible for balance and easier time.

Maybe the issue could be stated that gamers are tired of a cartoony saturated genre and want change from the status quo.
It's a shame what happened to 'Vanguard" (was labeled as the next EQ back in the days), but SOE happened with that title
Now I hope the best for EQN and the bar has been set way high these days when it comes to new mmorpgs, but there is just something about it, I just can't get myself hyped about it.
To me, the real EQ has always been the 1st one, even through it's cosmetic changes, it still has that feel what EQ should be and all about.
Well there style is kind of WoW when it comes to graphic style, but the armor is way better then wow armors. Like what i remember from the youtube video they showed us last year.
Here is the link of what it look like last year :
Sure the warrior we see here the armor have a deja vu look from wow but it is way more bad ass then wow from anypoint of view. I just hope they don't the game like other posters says in this thread for 7 to 12 year old kids. At least they don't make there plate charcters wear a robe at max level, if they did that would be the thing i think that would kill it for lot's of players.
Come on SOE show us the good stuff already and give us some dates ofr the beta or release. We want to know more.

Remember that EQN will also be designed for PS4 controller play so 8 active skills max to map to 8 buttons.
EQN is targeting a completely new audience.
what? FFXIV will love to have a word with u :P
arrows , buttons and L / R modifiers plenty of buttons

It looks so childish...like it is meant for ages 7-12, not a 3rd installment of a franchise with modern technology, personally I will be passing on this game.
No you wont, you'll be playing it like the rest of us
And surely the art direction of this game can't come as a shock to anyone by now?
We had this discussion a year ago.
I will not be playing this game or giving another cent to SOE after they closed Vanguard, a game I spent 7 years in.
I kept an open mind, hoping EQNext would be a step up from EQ/EQ2/VG and I have been watching Landmark since it's alpha release (another game I will not spend money on) hoping EQN would be much better than that and I am far from impressed, I am actually very disappointed with everything they have to show after how many years now?
My money stays with me, I will pass on this game without any doubt in my mind that it will fall very short of the mark. I am an adult, not a pre teen, with todays technology they really had no excuse to take that cheap path of cartoon style to their flagship game IP, it's pretty sad to say the least.

the fact is they are still competing with WoW that came out 2004-2005.. EQ Next is called next and not 3..
for 1 reason.. to go dirty.. to try to steal all those 13-16year olds with mums visa cards.
This game wont give goosebumps..

both WOW and GuildWars 1 had some butt ugly character models in the early stages of game creation
that were shown to the public
