we are 20 year or more(most likely more) out from "full dive" matrix style vr stuff. So im in with this era's level of tech for vr, its good enough to have fun. as long as there is a need and want for interaction in a virtual space, the tech will follow.

as for mmo's in vr,  Rift the game has already put the Oculus sdk into thier game, you can play in third or first person, but it still needs a lot of polish. ill play it when cv1 comes out. it might even bring me back to playing mmo's with excitement instead just casually checking in with the state of the game, i cant remember the last time i raided something.

it may not be perfect, but iv been tired of looking through windows into another world for awhile now.

I don't see a problem looking through windows when I can control the viewpoint.

VR is only first person ... may be good for some games, but clearly not for all.

A little history on gaming will help understand the whole 1st person view thing.

The first view to be tried other than 2d arcade was first person view. Games like Doom for example was one of the first games that broke the '2d' version of games like Duke Nukem 2d.

Then a few game companies started making this '3rd person view' I personally didnt like and I still do not understand its popularity however the main take away from that history is that most of the games you play in 3rd person view could work just fine in 1st person view and most likely would have been created in 1st person view if it wasnt for the history I just mentioned.

Some gamers have nearly zero experience playing in 1st person thus when they play they dont like it. However I wonder how long that dislike lasts if they keep playing.

Not top down isometrics ARPGs like Diablo. Not RTS like Starcraft. Not third person action games that you need to see your character.

Oh, don't get me wrong, i play lots of FPS too, but just saying it is not suitable for all types of games. And if you have not notice, even top down games like D3 are 100% rendered in 3D now.

Actually, top down games can be played in first person if you think about yourself being like a god looking down at the world lol. Sort of like a table top game or a game of chess.

I would love the Oculus Rift device or devices like it with an mmorpg with a decent virtual world, i could really care less about using VR in lobby style games.

I remember, it was like 10 or 15 years ago, public radio doing a story on virtual sex.

    Whoa! What?!?

"Oh yeah", they touted, "It can be done. We have the technology now to do this."

The first MMORPG that incorporates VR glasses and such into their game will sweep the floor with WoW.

OMG, I should be paid a ridiculously large hunk of money for this idea. : P

Why not ? I chose Yes.

I mean why people not want virtual reality where you can experience make something that impossible to make in reality ?

But just head display don't make it virtual reality. Virtual reality need give feel when touch virtual objects

Taste and smell (which very hard and risk) , don't ready matter . But without feel when touch , it isn't virtual reality.

Okay , i know i don't live long enough to have matrix VR ,

so i will low the deal. Not have the feel when touch is okay

At less I need to be able to move freely without hit the walls or destroy something with my hand ,

or damaged myself while playing lol.

The problem with VR helmets is that more than 50% of all people still get motion sickness and serious side effects from using it. Oculus improved on this issue, but haven't really solved it.

I have much more faith in a holodeck type of vr with gesture recognition. But maybe the glasses/helmet tech is a step towards this.

    I voted no.

For me, the marriage between how one views the game (Oculus Rift type headgear) and game input (mouse and keyboard) needs to be addressed, which it is not.

Currently, I have a 108 key keyboard. Add in CTRL, ALT, and Shift and suddenly I have 324 input keys. Add in my 3 button mouse and I have 9 more input choices. What companies (especially console companies) just do not get is that there is no substitute for this array of input, yet.

For me, I HAVE to be able to look at my keyboard. With my eyes basically blinded from periphery view, I do not want it. Yet :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

If they do virtual reality right we wont need keypads anymore.  I'm pro VR but I'm worried about motion sickness.

    semantics

I mean we could argue all day on what is or is not virtual reality but the core question is ...do you want an MMO with this Oculus Rift thingy or not? Do you want to use the same technology that was made 20 years ago until smell and touch come about?

So ugh, yeah, buying a 3d tv to watch 2d content~ The point is not that you can't use it for these games, but the fact it is pointless. I mean,  you'd still look at your character from the outside. And i don't believe, that anyone wants VR headsets, to enjoy being a camera over your character more.

I think you guys are talking about two different things.

    1. strategy top down games could be awesome and could even add game play features that are clunky using just a screen.
    2. Over the shoulder view. This is something I completely do not understand in any shape or form even in traditional ways using a monitor. I personally think its the worst anti-immerisive feature ever created and I have no idea why it ever took root. So with that I clearly cant speak to that view.

I am talking about games like Starcraft. Imagine the entire world is on a table, like a holographic table. You are starring down at the table controlling your soldiers in the same manner that Tony Stark controls his computer.

I have seen alot of comments about VR in MMOs and FPS games over the years and it would be great to see... when the technology can actually allow it.

Truth be told even the Occulus Rift is far from being Virtual Reality.  It is probably the closest facsimile of VR  in our limited technological state. I am not talking just sound and graphics, but Full Dive technology that is true VR environments.

I will quote Kirito from Sword Art Online II Gun Gale - " The difference between Reality and Virtual reality is the amount of information. In Reality, when you hold someones hand you feel the texture, the pressure, and the warmth of their hand. In Virtual Reality you dont have that amount of information"

Sure the Occulus Rift will be fun if they can fix the latency issue graphically, however there is much left undone to make it feel anything like VR.

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT

Playing: The Secret World until Citadel of Sorcery goes into Alpha testing.

Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games

    Anticipating:Citadel of Sorcery

    yes with that I agree.

Also, I have the DK2 and for the set up demo it was neat that I could lean down and look up INTO the lamp and see the bulb which otherwise would have been really hard to do with a keyboard. I could see 'god view' games making games even more interesting with that, say for example on could look into a building

Yes you can, but there is not much point of using VR for it. I will take a real holographic table (in fact, there is a prototype of "floating" manipulable images .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Displair) instead.
