oh and the moment then lower the dungeon difficulties I will probably stop playing! Its so gorgeous to have challenge in an MMO these days!

I couldn't even manage to get through the tutorial. Usually that is a pretty serious sign. I even had nearly over 6 months of beta access to it. Same went for GW2. I'd log in and ... nothing ... grabbed ... my ... interest ... Zzz.

    You stay sassy!

Idk about what the perception of the game in the West was but here in Mother Russia we expected:

    - quality solo experience. It's really good actually, but the quests simply do not make you feel entangled/immersed in the process. Housing was at first fun too, but there's just that much of it you can do before it bores you. And no voice acting! C'mon man, you have to at least strive for the industry standard that was beset by SWTOR.

    - group PvE. Simply said, it was too hard and unrewarding when we started out at launch. Adventures and dungeons weren't fun. Raids? They're ok, but you'd have to rip yourself a new one to access them and most people don't want to suffer in a game, they want to enjoy it.

    - PvP. Well, open world PvP was fun while it lasted the first week. But starting week 2 both factions just grinded quests together side by side, no confrontation whatsoever (Hazak). And structured PvP just looked like it was put there for the sake of it. No reason to do it whatsoever.

I left the game in a month's time after launch having gotten attuned on one char and leveling several alts. Most Russian gaming communities had dissolved/disbanded within the first two months, I only know of one clan that still plays on Hazak.

For the next-to-perfect combat system, pretty world and an overall well done game Carbine failed to prioritize one thing - make players interested. Even F2P, while surely bringing some new blood in, will not change the state of affairs there.

I'm just not willing to pay a monthly sub for a game anymore. Especially when I know it's going to go F2P in a few months.

It's the Atari Lynx (if you remember) all over again. When you try to give everything to everyone it usually ends up in the other direction.

If that is how you judge games then you shouldnt be allowed to play anymore.

I don't even know how to interpret this. I'm impressed you stuffed so much misanthropic action into one sentence. Bad graphics turned me away from this title from Day one, I should thank them for making a game that is essentially a humorous cartoon because it saved me money and time.

    @Tokken +1

MMORPG players are often like Hobbits: They don't like Adventures

same here, I am willing buy game and pay ONCE, but then play for free (like GW2, i play daily since beta), so i am waiting, call me back, when Wildstar become F2P, i give a try... (same TESO etc.)

For me not much went wrong really, being a casual player.

At first, in open beta, I was turned off actually during tutorial play already. But after launch I gave it another shot and I liked it. It had some different mechanics, nice humor, I like the space-cowboy theme. But - at the end of the day, with the graphics (though I don't mind them) and being quest-grind heavy, I felt I could just as well go to back to Wow where I still have much left to do (bear in mind, I am a casual player), aside from side-tracking and playing other games and MMOs.

So as good as the game is, I don't really miss it, now that I am gone from it. Sorry to say. Not even sure if F2P would change that.

First off, i don't think misanthropic means what you think it means.

Secondly, when talking about "What went wrong" You don't talk about aesthetics as they are 100% subjective. Which is what you and Tokken are doing. Secondly, the "Subscription? Nothx" is your prerogative, but again should not be brought up in a discussion of 'What went wrong?' as like almost every other human being alive, if you actually looked at what you spend money on, you'll realize 15 a month is nothing. Unless you're still getting mommy to pay for your things then its different.

Not sure why people would play this knockoff when WOW is still kicking ass after 10 years.

Also you confuse  tedium with challenge. Two very different things.

When a game falls flat on its face, I don't think you can usually point to one thing that was done catastrophically wrong that "broke" the game for everyone.  People look for different things in their games.  WildStar happened to not do much at all that was outstanding.  Whatever you're into as a player, there are game's out there, maybe even one's you've played, that do them better.  In the areas where it was like WoW, it was worse than WoW.  In the areas it was like GW2, it was worse than GW2.  In the areas you might argue it excelled, only a small population cared.

I can only speak for myself why I have now left the game even though I do like it overall. The main reason is that I found something I like playing more. Please note that I never bothered with PvP in this game.

What WS has going for it in my opinion:

    - An interesting world with a good and sound base for lore and expansion of that lore.

    - Sci-fi, this is important since there are fewer sci-fi MMORPGs out there and I prefer sci-fi to fantasy.

    - Decent systems overall and a good choice of systems: housing, interesting crafting that actually is worth something, adventures, the path system, etc.

    - Challenging gameplay at all levels. It keeps me on my toes and I often felt good when I did succeed at doing something difficult.

    - I actually like the mobility options in this game very much. I have mixed feelings about the action combat because I find the build-up, finisher, utility rotation drab after a while.

What is wrong in my opinion:

    - As I have said in previous posts, the classes. They need reworking as I find them highly flawed and lack a hook. I also think that class customization needs an overhaul, there is too little flexibility in how you can build your class. Lastly more needs to be done with what kind of skills you get and the over-reliance on build-up and finishers of more recent MMOs has to go.

    - Too much reliance on grindy group play at endgame and a raid system that is closed to anyone not in a top raiding guild. I also think they should lower the number of people required in raids seeing how hard it is to get the necessary amount of people to go run one. They could keep some of the current 40 mans in, but I think they should put in a flexible raid system and smaller raids to ease people into the bigger ones or at least give an option to smaller guilds to raid if they can't scrounge up 40 people.

    - I utterly hate the concept of timed dungeons and being awarded a score on how fast you run them. If it was just for an achievement, that would be one thing, but it is far more integral to the endgame than that.

Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.

for me, what went wrong was the combat. you had all the attention to position and facing - heavy mouse work - of TERA and TESO, with all the target management and click-to-cast of WoW. it's like they tried to make an action rpg mmo and then halfway in decided that in order to make it truly hardcore you had to not only control in one of two standard ways, but both at once. It was just too clunky for me, and all the addons i tried to "fix" it, to make it play like TESO/TERA, just fucked it up more.

I really had hope for this one, but now i know to be more observant on the control scheme next time around.

Thing is, if i'm gonna sink the time into an MMO, that MMOs take to get anywhere, it's gotta be bloody well perfect or i'm back to my casual multiplayer and singleplayer games.

If they hit the feel of the Mass Effect games with the MMO for that one, i'll have found the MMO i'll be playing till the end of time.

    What went wrong? really!?

If the community here really can't understand what was wrong with Wildstar before the game even made it to your computer, then we really are in for it.

    The future is bleak..

I think that part of the problem is that people compared it to WoW when it really is not that much like WoW, even in classic form. I am not quite sure where people get the idea that WS is vanilla WoW outside of some very superficial aspects. A lot of people loved vanilla WoW and I think would flock to an official vanilla WoW server. I think WS would be more popular if it were truly like vanilla WoW.

It was the terrible combat the action combat. My hands were hurting and it was bad the mouse turn and the holding down the mouse button to navigate and move to avoid telegraphs and try to heal. I realised was no fun at all after awhile.

  • mmrvmmrv Member RarePosts: 305

     uhm it wasnt fun?

    it wasnt cool

    the classes we bleh

    the abilties were bleh

    the effects were bleh

but where it REALLY went wrong for those who could stomach the things i listed.

they confused tedious with fun, noone wants to spend 20 days grinding to get keyed.

Then they decided that there would then be ZERO incentive for doing thier tedious raid process, IE the loot was EPIC GARBAGE, so much that for the initial raids crafted gear was the best by a large margin.

They earned thier fail let the game rot was dated before it began with ugly grapihs engine.

Where it went wrong for me is on different parts of the game. This game had everything i was looking for on paper:

    - I love the art style, i just find this kind of art style age better then the more realistic looks

    - Real time action

    - Housing

    - Scifi, i got a bit tired of all the high fantasy MMO's that came out

Sadly when the game was released i got bored quickly with it :(

    - The beginners zone took far to long. Sorry but it was simply not fun being there, especially not when you are the only one around there. It was tedious and boring and took for to long. I do not want to be in the same area for so many levels as there.

    - Real time action seemed nice, but in Wildstar it was awkward, having to use the numberkeys while walking around and trying to dodge things while attacking. In the end it still was more like old school just standing still and attack .

    - I'm a RPer, i play MMORPG's to RP in. Wildstar in Europe atleast didn't had much RP going on. I played the game for 2 months, trying to find RP, there simply was no RP in public anywhere. Then a game gets boring to me, especially when the questing isn't anything special either.

It just fall short on many things for me personally. I want to like it, but its just to tedious :(

Classic Age of Conan story. If players leaving, most of them will not return. A released mmorpg need to have an ok feeling from the start. If not, the next game is calling and players will not look back. Sad, but true. And if you have to pay a sub it will even be harder.

Next hit will come when the year sub players need to decide stop or not.

    >>> It’s not been an easy question to answer, as we all have our opinions on why WildStar came down to earth with a bump.

    It's very easy to answer.

Carbine (as most other developers and greedy publishers) confused mindless, long, trivial grind with difficulty (or "hardcore" as some call it). Same boring static content, depressing dailies, pointless OW, trivial pre-instance content, same types of same quests repeated all over again (kill shit, pickup shit, fedex), broken crafting, quest hubs - all same broken game design copy-pasted and repeated ad-nauseum for 1.5 decades. Relatively quick journey to level cap then enormous amount of mindless geargrind flavored with casino fetish and timesinks - serving the purpose of gating medical amount of actually good content (instances) before you're allowed to even put a foot in them.

On top of that - for many people - offputting disney-like visual style and humor of dubious quality.

It's /not/ p2p vs f2p. It's any issue of copy-pasta geargrinder with expectation that people will keep paying for it to be allowed to do boring crap for months before they are alllowed to do something interesting.

I can tell you what went wrong.

There was a mediocre uninspired game and the press and critics hyped it up to celestial heights. How could you ever give this piece of boredom a review of 9 fellow mmorpg.com critics? Well, 2 months later you have the correct review from the customers.

    Hodor!

  • Sassy_Gay_UnicornSassy_Gay_Unicorn Member UncommonPosts: 316
They misunderstood their demographic. The masses want casual, just-slightly-above-easy game play. If you want Money Hats, that's what you create. If you want to be a hardcore, raid-centric niche game.. well, you've got Wildstar.

How is WoW kicking ass exactly? With its outdated combat against Wildstar's amazingly executed new take on MMORPG combat (thats one of the pillars for me in this game), "housing" aka garrisons after 10 years of release, outdated engine AND difficulty lowered to a standard where a monkey could run 20 man raid successfully...

oh and yeah, they are running out of ideas on lore... cataclysm was a great move, but Pandas, really? or back in time to draenor where garrosh changed the course of history - REALLY? jeez

nothing went wrong great game great gameplay great story all great but Carbine made 1 big big big mistake.

Like i already wrote at the time it was in beta they cant make a price higher than Blizzards World of Warcraft or you need to be way better and that isnt wildstar not even close.

If Carbine came to mmoprg and study they seen rift, tera, swtor etc learned that hard leason, blizzard made a standard in fee per month so you need to beat them if you go higher and they not even beat tera , rift or swtor
