600.000 others do, but thanks for letting us know
edit: whoops, 623.550 to be exact
Except that those numbers are far to be accurate as "people".
I would be surprised that if for real, they had more than 100k-150k PEOPLE.
Not a coincidence the "number of people" was not mentioned in their entry to the Guiness Book Record, just the money acquired.
Conspiracy...!
Yeah, the soon reached 59 million are coming out of thin air...
Just keep the stabs at SC coming! Does the anti-SC brigade at least agree on the money being real, or is there some theory they are paying their growing 280 man team with monopoly money?
Its not conspiracy when you can check for yourself. But obviously, you never will be the kind interested to make such checkings. Others will, I have no doubt.
Its not 'out of the thin air". Its from the pockets of a few whales, just that. You do not need to be really a master of Illuminatti to see that. A ship of 350$ is put on sale and they make - exactly in that period - a jump in their chart show they making 1.5 to 2 million dollars, and the chart dropping exactly when that ship sales ends. Here you can evaluate that the majority definitely bought that ship, to make the chart raising, and making a simple division to get an average of people. Again, it's always about 5k, usually less.
The money is real, apparently. But nothing is saying in any place, except from the CIG speech (with marketing interests, so, not really not biased source), that this money necessarily came from a crowd. After all, one member of the "crowd" could be simply the representative of some investor. And the investor could give to them and they could simply pretend that he is a "backer" and just behind the doors, having their contract of sharing of profit or any other kind.
Their counters and miliion dollars are basically their most important marketing tools that give them publicity in the press. Its not really so difficult to imagine they working on that to hype, instead really showing real stats.
But I know that from a blind believer that assume them as gods or angels, this always will be some kind of "conspiracy", even that they could check by themselves if interested.
Their own marketing attitude is not exactly of someone that is really having success. Would not make sense to take some risks as they take. For example, they risk to piss off a lot of people by bringing to earlier things like Racing and FPS, after all their delays, and clearly to try to appeal to these markets. Let's be honest here, even the most excited fan would not really feel so bad if FPS and Racing were things to be released later. Still, they gave priority to that and are going to release that earlier. This is not the attitude of someone that is really ok with what they are getting. And definitely, their average is very tiny if they really want to keep the same level of income after release, in a time where ships won't be on sale anymore.
They need much more people, but they need to come as earlier as possible, so they fall in their marketing endoctrinate machine.

Game is buy to play, everything will be in the game for ingame credits.
Good to know! Thanks for the info (I haven't been following the development of it at all)
Just to clarify that info. They can't be bought by in-game credits right now (unless you buy those credits with real money to sum
with what you have).
For now and for YEARS, if you want to acquire a ship for your collection, you will have to pay real money for.
Only after release (or maybe some time before during Beta), both years away, they will give you the ability to really do what the guy above answered to you.
so for a paltry $600 you can have the constructs of someone else's imagination transformed into "virtual" (eventually). And by virtual I mean almost not pretend! How great is that!

"Right now" is irrelevant, "right now" the game is an Alpha.
The persistent universe goes live in 2015, that´s not years, that is 12-14 MONTHS.
No one HAS TO PAY money, for anything except the basic game pack, you can buy the game now with a basic Aurora for 30 bucks, or 40, don´t know the current pricing.
You´ll get a hangar, a ship, you can play any module that will come out until the official release of SC and Squadron 42 single player campaign.
Again, basic package 30-40 and you get everything all the others have there are no second class backers. Go download the Dogfighting module "Arena Commander", that is the first playable demo of the game and see for yourself.
Originally posted by eyelolled so for a paltry $600 you can have the constructs of someone else's imagination transformed into "virtual" (eventually). And by virtual I mean almost not pretend! How great is that!
The prices reflects perfectly what is going to be Star Citizen.
Fancy ships to look in an Hangar ($1000, $600, $400, $350... and so on) - or in a video, or in a picture, or in 3rd person view to see his lego parts moving (with no gameplay associated)... in a very poor game (which costs $30 dollars).
Their prices of today basically reflects what will be the end result and even the reality of the game today, and even the reality of their focus in a marketing plan that rules a development plan, leading it to be as slow as possible, because they need more time to sell those fancy and overpriced ships before actually releasing their poor 30 bucks game.

Actually you have to pay 45 to get access to the AC. And more 5 to each new module between Alpha and Beta that will be released. And this "Aurora" does not make you stay in the game for more than a few minutes, since its terrible and weak. And if you dare to go to multiplayer with them, or in the Racing mode, it will be more fun - for the others, not for you.

this game is as real as any other title with a 50+ million $$$ budget in development
besides, this is barely enough for paying almost 300 people working on SC for 36 months, take out your calculator once in a while.
So, you presume that CIG pay 300 people, salaries, in a monthly basis.
LoL
I have no words.
Don't you remember that CR himself told that the game, the whole development would cost 20-23? And even earlier of the time that he told that, all those people that you mentioned were been hired or contracts were already closed with thirdy parties, which means that they were already included in the budget? And do you really think that all those thirdy parties work for CIG all the time, instead "on demand of features"?
Amnesia. These fans all suffer of amnesia. Amnesia all over that place.

I couldn't care less if there are people that want to throw 600$ out the window. Each to it's own, i guess.
My concern is that other devs will see this and will try to somehow replicate it. Hopefully in the next years we won't have to fork out thousands of dollars just to be able to play a game.
Hopefully...
Not happening. Other campaigns came and none of them presented this same level of overprice in-game items with earlier access exclusively acquired by real dollars. All them sold to you the thing for a price, and that price gave you access to everything (to be acquired by gameplay) as soon as available/implemented.
Only CIG adopt this absurd marketing strategy that drives their whole development and even schedule, so it fits with time to sell more ships. That leads to CIG having no interest to achieve the "release" status, while for the others, that interest is clear, because they are counting on people coming later, instead insanely milking continuously their most excited supporters.

Chris Roberts is so deeply inserted in this "Money Machine" party, instead focusing in the development itself (because its very obvious that as more quickly they developed less money they could make), that in his last "million dollars" letter, he said this:
"10,000 UEC may not seem like a lot, but at this stage in the game it actually means we’re giving our backers several million dollars to outfit their ships!"
He can't even hold himself anymore. He has to mention "millions dollars" related to giving simple in-game credits for people. I wonder what you will tell to people that you are trying to convince to pledge based on a full release on 2015, that you so gently clarified us about, in case of they been so far of that as they are far of the Beta release that should be relesed about 3 months ago.
choo-chooo! all aboard the hate train, next stop Trollboken. Continue the "CR stole X-mas" campaign!
This easy to spot baiting thread was obsolete the moment it went online, why? The limited number of ships (890) went within half an hour.
Yes add-on pledge reward ships do not come with game packages, that´s why they are called add-on.
Anyway, the ships are looong gone. People who have that kind of cash enjoy supporting the development of the game they want.
Some people have spare money to support a cause... terrible, isn´t it?
Incredibly unfair that these ships are ONLY for rich people- oh wait, you can earn the ship when the game gets released without spending a dime, you two almost forgot that right? Right.
Some people have spare money to support a cause... terrible, isn´t it?
It is actually. Because CIG has prioritied these people and has put up a real currency price tag on everything to do with the game. CIG has only been getting bolder and bolder with their prices the more this core of 2-3k people buy ships.
Incredibly unfair that these ships are ONLY for rich people- oh wait, you can earn the ship when the game gets released without spending a dime, you two almost forgot that right? Right.
How long until the game is released? Oh you forgot that right? Right?
There are also no plans to earn income in AC in order to buy these ships.
So everything is stuck behind a real cash paywall for the next 2-3 years.
OMG OMG OMG limit edition!!! OMG I BETTER BUY ONE RIGHT NOW!! limited!!! ONLY $600 for to pretend to own something in a pretend game that will probably suck because the company has figured out how dumb some gamers are and are putting all efforts into marketing and hype instead of simply releasing the product faster.
Cash Shop Online!
For everyone that has purchased a ship do you click the order button than sit back and think "I own a pixel space ship" Do you go and tell your friends or are you too embarrassed?
They should start pre-charging cash to be allowed into certain areas of the game also. Like if you want to dock at a space station, you can pay $600 and be able to park at one in a great location etc. Hmm I wonder if they are still hiring, I have so many ideas.
P.S. Im making an MMORPG. Please send me money are all your dreams will come true.

So please oh economics professor, explain to us peons exactly what the justification is to actually develop and publish a game as long as foolish lemmings keep handing over cash for ships in enough quantities to not only pay the staffs salaries, but their mortgage, bills, company overhead, extravagant company parties, paid vacations, etc., etc., etc.
its just like a business model for a simulator I had to deal with once called test/fix. The problem is, you never actually deliver because there is always something to fix and the money has to keep coming in to pay for such efforts. Here it's design/sell, different name same concept. Keep selling bits for bigger dollars and you never have to deliver as long as the cash keeps flowing.
if the game does release, it will most likely be nothing like you have overhyped yourself for and it will be your own fault because they will spin it and you and those other supporters will be left in the cold with lower bank accounts.
Some people have spare money to support a cause... terrible, isn´t it?

who the hell cares about what is behind a "paywall".. in PRE-ALPHA module testbeds?
so you were one of the impatient "BUT I WANT EVERYTHING NOW" people right?
They just had a week of "fly any ship you want in Arena Commander" did you make use of it or just waste time here, trolling SC threads on a 24/7 basis?
Next 2-3 years you say? Fine, then it takes 2-3 years until release, if you think so, I can wait.
Let´s put aside the actual roadmap plans they have outlined on CiitizenCon and believe Mr. Internet Expert SGEL instead.

Are you saying that when it leaves the "pre-alpha" state all the ships will suddenly be available to all backers? No. They'll stay behind the paywall since that's how CIG makes their big cash.
so you were one of the impatient "BUT I WANT EVERYTHING NOW" people right?
Huh? No, I want what is playable now to be playable without me having to pay real cash FOR EVERY SINGLE ship I want to fly. I don't mind earning it in game, but that won't be available in game for years.
They just had a week of "fly any ship you want in Arena Commander" did you make use of it or just waste time here, trolling SC threads on a 24/7 basis?
Yes I did take advantage of it which is another reason why this topic is very irritating to me. Obviously I'm not a fan of the flight mechanics as they are now but it was mildly entertaining flying the M50 and the Hornet.
Also, why would you think I am trolling?
Next 2-3 years you say? Fine, then it takes 2-3 years until release, if you think so, I can wait.

2-3 years is being very optimistic. Have you seen the list of features they have planned compared to what they have achieved in 2 years of development (even if you take into account startup time of their studios)?
Also I'd appreciate if you would argue my points instead of trying to personally offend me in almost every reply of yours.

You don't even get a copy of the game when you pay 600$ to get the ship.
You need to buy a separate game package in order to actually use it.
It's a good thing they chose this crowdfunding path so they didn't have to deal with evil publishers.

Keep selling bits for bigger dollars and you never have to deliver as long as the cash keeps flowing.
if the game does release, it will most likely be nothing like you have overhyped yourself for and it will be your own fault because they will spin it and you and those other supporters will be left in the cold with lower bank accounts.
who the hell cares about what is behind a "paywall".. in PRE-ALPHA module testbeds?
so you were one of the impatient "BUT I WANT EVERYTHING NOW" people right?
Huh? No, I want what is playable now to be playable without me having to pay real cash FOR EVERY SINGLE ship I want to fly. I don't mind earning it in game, but that won't be available in game for years.
Yes I did take advantage of it which is another reason why this topic is very irritating to me. Obviously I'm not a fan of the flight mechanics as they are now but it was mildly entertaining flying the M50 and the Hornet.
Also, why would you think I am trolling?
2-3 years is being very optimistic. Have you seen the list of features they have planned compared to what they have achieved in 2 years of development (even if you take into account startup time of their studios)?
Also I'd appreciate if you would argue my points instead of trying to personally offend me in almost every reply of yours.
..Cake..
