I agree with this. I also think Darkfall's combat is better, no self rooting yay!
I love PvE solo challenges, although I think I would have more of thrill soloing in EQ. It funny it has that slow archaic combat system but the mechanics of the mobs (and the fact that they kill you in 2 seconds) make it fun and a crazy challenge (FD pulling etc)
Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
I always thought the combat was overrated personally, once you figure out the pattern of attacks you just dodge accordingly as you would in an 80's arcade game. Just looks better.
Oh jeez, without question Tera has the best combat in the genre...from my point of view at least. These BAM fights can be unforgiving, are a definite challenge, and the dungeons I absolutely loved. Boss fights were epic as hell. The only game that rivals Tera dungeons is Wildstar in terms of difficulty. All other dungeins in MMOs are pretty much carebear with possibly the exception of Neverwinter(those can be tough.). WoW, GW2, Rift, TSW...just a joke.
I know combat can be engaging without being action, and I think WoW is doing this pretty well. But really having to move out of the way or risk being curb stomped...no other game gives you this incentive.
If nothing else, Tera showed us what true combat and dungeons should look like. I would get back into the game, but I think it would be very lonely...I need a quasi populated game.

But thats kind of the point isnt it? Figure out the pattern of attacks...look for the small tells that the mob might give, such as slightly lifting his right for in prep for a big swing or something. In other games...do you really learn pattern of attacks, or even need to?
Yes, the combat in TERA is nice and the game still looks great. My issues with TERA are:
1. Dreadful questing. It's terribly repetitive and boring.
2. I hate how classes are locked in to ONE weapon type. It's like class = weapon and I have never liked it when games do that.
3. This is kind of a small thing but it has always bothered me..many of the pieces or armor are just very slight color variations of previous armors. You can hardly even tell you switched sometimes. This may be different at higher levels, but I could never make it much past 15 due to #1 above.
I also like the combat in Neverwinter, but like TERA it has other issues.
I would still like to play the end game of tera but to grind through the content is to boring I know they gave an option for the us players to skip everything when will they give the option to the eu people then ill try.
the game looks and feels good but the levelling is too mush of a grind.

I agree, the grind just became too much for me at about level 30 (the ridiculous bikini armour was also irritating me quite a bit).
Vindictus has the best PvE of them all, especially boss fights. It scales incredible high with skill. Having the latest endgame gear won't do a bit if you are terrible at playing, while you can solo everything, even naked and with a low level weapon, if you have the skill.
The rest of the game is something you either like or not, as it certainly does have it's own share of problem, but the combat is superb.
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
Originally posted by Yamota Yeah the questing is incredibly bland and there is almost no class customization. But the combat, specially againts those big ass monsters, are so damn good. I played ESO before returning to TERA and it puts ESO in shame when it comes to PvE combat.
all i see in that video is attack/heal/spacebar with unlimited mana..now go do the same in Eso with elite mobs at skull areas without watching your mana/stamina/block/dodge & in the 1/3 of the fight you will be pretty much dead meat..bigger monsters doesn't make the combat better imo..
for me eso combat is better because of the management of resources such as mana, stamina, ultimate, block ,dodge, active buffs & light/heavy attacks..but that's me..
I like ESO, and I thought the combat was decent, but ESO combat doesn't hold a candle to TERA. It's not even close.
faster maybe yes but better i just don't see it & i bet if the op close the eyes & put random skills in the same video he will take down the mob again without even trying..
Not sure you know how BAMS operate. I can promise you that closing your eyes, or using random skills, will have you dead within 10 seconds. Guaranteed.
Those BAMS are more difficult than any non-boss mob in ESO. And the beauty of the combat system is that they are still capable of being soloed IF you are very good at your class and you can maintain focus for anywhere from 3-10 minutes. A single mistake gets you killed. But a player well-versed in their own class mechanics and the tendencies of the BAM can solo it. In other words, skill trumps RNG.
If that's not the definition of a great combat design, I don't know what is.
To me doing the same stuff for several minutes to just kill one BAM was challenging when I was learning the rotation - once you learn the BAM's moves - it's easy to know what to do (when to dodge, block attack etc....), and then it's just routine execution.
My issue remains on how long it takes to kill them - it's far too slow for my tastes.
If they reduced the TTK to 45seconds to 90seconds tops - it would be a lot more enjoyable *for me*, again I only speak for myself.
Kano is right. The BAMs are decent fights and the margin of error is small but they still follow a pattern. Each class comes up with a few alternate tactics for the situations that a particular BAM presents.
You then execute those things over and over and over ad nauseum. If the TTK were lower then the margin or error and tight management would make the fights intersting. Since they can be quite long it goes from interesting to tedious.
Things can be both tense and tedious. Unfortunately doing the same things over and over for 5 minutes straight becomes quite tedious. Even if it is still tense due to the margin of error.
This and the linear progression of the "combo" are TERA two biggest weaknesses in character fighting gameplay. The action style itself and the BAMs themselves are considerably better than most games when narrowly focused. Its pretty night well made in that regard. But after a while you realize a basilisk jump straight up into the air for a bodyslam after giving a certain visual queue and for you class you come up with a response. When you need to do this 10 times in a row and grind it out on 20 mobs, it gets pretty old even if you need to be on top of things in each fight.
Like everyone says it is very good graphically, but the thing for me that killed it and after 20 to 40 min of play time i uninstalled is the fact that there is way too much cut scenes.
Let me explain : I get to go to the first main city, i take the flying thing and get to see a cut scene unti i reach the city. ( no exploration available with such a amazing view offered to us ).
I want to explore the maps, nope i can't i am restricted to specific areas.
I want to travel anywhere, nope i am restricted in every ways possible.
Uninstalled the game at that point and did not reach even level 15 or 20 and that is when the game came out. Never touched it again and never will no matter the amount of content it will had.
Yes i love the fights and the graphics but it is exactly what a rpg is, restricted to specific paths to take to go from point A to point B. It is hidden in a way to not be that noticable but if you take time to look correctly you will find that quest brings you from point A to point B and forget to try to explore you can't.

I don't know. I was never wondering if that guy would win, rather just when he would.
Here is a video of a PvE fight that kept me guessing
Retlon Brenclog: Crushbone [EQ] fight.

Lol, so terrible. And I remember when we played it back in '99 we thought it was the best thing ever.
THIS! The game is reaaaally slow until higher levels.

soloing dungeon in gw2.
basically you miss a button a dodge, you are instantly dead. That is quite interesting.
I didn't play tera though, IP locked, so hard for me to compare.
I can name at least 3 games I have played have much better combat system, tried TERA and uninstalled it after around 30 to 40 minutes of playing:
TESO (The Elder Scrolls Online)
NW (Neverwinter)
GW2 (Guild Wars 2)
Graphically, very impressive as we can all tell. I probably can't find a better looking fight.
Mechanically however, not impressive. Nothing unique taking place here other than standard attacks and a few area moves.
Makes me wish a game this good looking actually took off and became something big....this and Aion. Rip.

I could never get past the asian style of the game and the fact you get rooted to te spot when you swing your weapon.. put me right off.
But I guess we all like different things and that fight does look pretty good.
