Popular does not mean good. Hype and marketing have a lot more to do with sales numbers, and thats one side of the game they got right..
There are examples off all sorts of commodities that sell well that aren't actually that great and imo Destiny joins that pile
Yup, starting from another Activision over-hyped, over-marketed IP, Call of Duty
As I said marketing can help drive sales but if you think it can make people play 3 hours a day for nearly 12 days out of 30 then I am not sure what you are taking.
Nor can marketing make people who played the beta and didn't like it buy the game.
And other games this year have had huge campaigns and have failed to sell this well.
If you don't like the look of the game - fine. A lot of people - clearly - have been spending a lot of time in the game. At some point they get bored and move on but so what.

Also, that 500 million price tag is virally taken out of context. That is not the cost of development. That is a total, for marketing, development of this Destiny, and presumably future iterations in the series. FYI.
Miley Cyrus might sell millions of records but that doesn't mean her music is good.. It just means people are dumb.
Destiny deserves its score.. When you make a game that's 500 million dollars of course it's gonna have people flock to it because the game with that much behind it should be epic..
WRONG
Nah, Miley is the shit. You obviously either have no taste or you are making a horrible point.
Not sure if serious. How do you feel about flockaflame, kesha, beiber, kalifa, and one direction? Because come on now, at best maybe you could justify the sales of one of those based on quality, but likely not even that.

First comment got eaten:
I wrote this editorial. I just wanted to point out that the larger point, which I spend a good amount of time discussing, and which I believe is the larger issue, is that Destiny is an example of how non-sectioned review scores are inherently flawed and a poor way to represent games. Destiny deserves its 76. I think it is undeniably a disappointment, though I do find it quite fun. But to sum it up as a 76 alongside other games of a similar score doesn't do justice to *why* and the fun value of the points it *did* earn. Reviews have nuance, blanket review scores do not and the level of post-launch activity 30 days out easily demonstrates that nuance is *required* to get an accurate picture of Destiny. Sales are one thing, hours played per day is entirely another and completely atypical for a mid-70s console game. And to those comparing against mmo playtimes per day, I would caution you not to. MMOs are complete outliers in their time requirements and do not compare against the average console multiplayer title. Try to find hourly data on similarly compared console games and you will be hard pressed to find anything at all, so saying three hours a day isn't important because it isn't unusual for you as a PC MMO player is a false comparison.
I really think that a lot of reviewers have lost touch with the average gamer. They judge games by the standards of more hard core gaming. Take people like Total Biscuit for example. In just about all of his reviews that first thing you hear is him whining about the fact that a game does not have 1080 p at 60 fps. Then he berates a game if you can't change all key bindings to suit his standards.
Well guess what, the average gamer does not care if the game runs at 60 fps or 30 fps or the fact that you can't change 50 key bindings. Most reviewers can't see the forest for the trees.
It is like movie critics who pan a movie that makes millions of dollars but they hate it. They also have different standards than the average movie goer.
I queue into a strike or crucible match within 10-20 seconds of going into queue anytime I try day or night. How many other games can claim that 45 days plus post launch? There are a handful for sure that can do that but most of those games have much higher average scores as well. I don't know how many people that means are playing Destiny but I do know it's a lot more than one would believe it would be at this point given it's review scores.
Destiny has it's flaws for sure but people who just dismiss it outright are fooling themselves if they believe the game doesn't have appeal to the mass market. That is more a sign that these people are out of touch with the reality of the market (reviewers as well) than that the market has something wrong with it.
People just cant handle the fact that lots of others like a game they dont like, so angry over nothing. Half the people here commenting either probably havent even played the game and just hate on it because angry joe told them to hate it or just salty over it being consoles only.
Originally posted by Golelorn Sales mean NOTHING. McDonalds or Wal-Mart come to mind. Also, plenty of niche games that were amazing, yet not near as popular.
I'm sorry but in a free'ish market economy they are the only thing that matters. I hate McDonalds food and won't step foot in a Wal-Mart but that doesn't make both of them any less of a success. Both have proven they can create a product at a price point that the consumer market wants longterm. If that's not success I don't know what is.
Personal opinion and preferences have nothing to do with it.
I've been playing both Destiny and Borderlands The Pre Sequel. I have been enjoying playing Borderlands more than I did Destiny ( perhaps because BL is familiar to me). Being able to trade gear with your friends is nice too. Destiny's graphics were good, but the storyline was not very compelling and the end boss fight was LAME. Fight three animated statues and bam!, you've defeated a God........ookay? I see myself buying DLC for BL but not so much for Destiny. As others have said, Destiny tries to be to many things and ends up being mediocre at everything.

Umm I know McDy's makes put em in a wierdo tray and heat em up science fiction burger's and everything. But what does Walmart make?
I really don't think you can say that reviews were WRONG just because the game has been popular. A review should point out flaws in the game, and if the reviewer is any good, those flaws exist, irrespective of market success.
for us, we are just playing till something better comes on ps4 (ghosts was not a lot of fun).
I was a huge supporter of the game and the beta , i was led to believe it would be amazing. Unfortunately, it did fall short.
Defiance has a much larger open world (although it's a tps, it still does pve better than destiny).
Borderlands has a much more open world, and about 20 times the scale in pve.
The pvp is smooth in destiny but , again, cod and bf do it better with much more progression, weapons, customization and competition.
To each their own i guess. we got our money's worth in my family, we had a ton of enjoyment and still plya today. It is not a "great" game, and i feel mass effect'd a bit with the content. At this point , we'll see how the new COD goes. they are having a loot system and a ton of pve stuff. Destiny was full of some very big promises that didnt deliver.
No, sales only prove that with the right sales-pitch you can sell almost anything to anyone. Destiny shows only that Bungee still is at a loss as to what can be done by them to top Halo. Destiny is a pretty-looking but average fps-in my opinion. They can maybe use some of that Destiny-money to make a truly good game next time around, if they can.
Originally posted by Maldach Diablo 3 sold well and is trash. McDonald's sells burgers left and right and they are trash. Sales do not equal quality.
In what world are the sales of a product not indicative of that product's quality relative to other products on the market?
You clearly have no clue how marketing works. Terrible movies make 100million+ all the time because they had an amazing marketing campaign. This works for every sellable item/service that exists.

Oh really? How did you figure out that that the movie is "bad" and sold only due "amazing marketing campaign"? How do you distinguish the difference?
Just because we were all stupid enough to fall for the destiny hype does NOT mean the game is doing well.
I convinced a lot of my friends to buy destiny, but none of us are still playing it.
Thing is we all bought it with the season pass included so we all still have it sitting on our systems hoping eventually bungie makes it worth playing with dlc content.
Like to add totally feel lied to and used by Bungie, they promised us way more than they delivered.
Kinda feel like as soon as they had something semi playable they took all the devs off Destiny and put them on Halo.

Rambo 2 and 3 made sure loads more money than say "Dancer in the dark". Is that because they are great movies and the other not?
I doubt it.

We'll see once the PC version comes out.
In my opinion the PC version is seriously going to compete with D3 on sold copies.
