Starcraft was simply Warcraft in space. Why not give us another MMO? They could improve the graphics, get back to functional 40+ man raiding with multiple bosses. Tons of things a new MMO could offer. Only everyone is content.
I just pray this wasn't "Project Titan." If that title ever really existed.
I am with you OP. No Incentive to make deep, open world, full featured games anymore. Just slap together a quick MOBA or FPS and make your millions.
I am not saying the game won't be fun, I think it will, it just won't hold my attention for very long and if it isn't free then I probably won't even end up buying it.
According to South Park... the real money is in mobile gaming.
Even worse. No disrespect to World of Warcraft, the game did great things for the MMO world. However developers realize the majority of people nowadays just want to pop into a match, have their fun, and leave it at that. So maybe the MMO as we know it really is dead? Or maybe not dead, just not a promising future....
It's like Fast Food, why doesn't McDonalds open fine dining establishments? Because it makes enough on 99cent sandwiches.
While your actual point has some merit, the bit at the end is flawed thinking.
What you're saying at the end about McDonalds is like saying why doesn't Payless open high quality fashion shoe stores? Because it makes enough on 3 dollar shoes. That's not the reason why at all. One of the most key things to being a successful company/corporation is to find a niche in the market, and take advantage of the low amount of competition, and don't expand to much to quickly.
This is exactly what Blizzard has done with WoW and continue to do with the various other gaming genres (no AAA digital CCG has ever been made before Hearthstone), MOBAs(only competition with 2 other competitors), Starcraft II(Blizzard worked to push it as a major e-sport and really had no competition for an e-sport RTS).
For McDonalds to open fine dining establishments. First off their trademark is recognized as a fast food chain. Understand what this means and you would have already come to the answer why they almost can't just open up some fine dining restaurants. Not to mention they'd be going up against insane competition already with a bunch of already well established fine dining places. Same thing with my Payless example, they would be at a disadvantage from the very get-go due to how much competition they would have to overcome just to get their foot in the door and scrape by let alone thrive and flourish.

More and more big companies are running away from MMOS and investing in TF2 syle arena games and MOBA"s. MMOS are just not worth the trouble to them it seems.

Fair enough, it wasn't the best example but it was the quickest I could think of. But the point still remains.
MMO's will be less appealing and more of a $$$ commitment in terms of what developers hope to produce in the future. If they think people aren't waiting for the next WoW but instead for the next LoL, then more games will be made similar to LoL. Even better is that LoL was a lot less money to develop than WoW, increasing the incentive for cheaper, e-sport centered games as an option. Then the trick is to develop a game with less content and more minute-to-minute enjoyability/playability, which I seriously value in a MOBA or FPS... but it isn't what an RPG attempts to provide generally.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

I don't see this as a bad thing for the genre. Exploding into the mainstream was great for a while, but I think falling back into the niche market the genre originated from will bring good things for those who favored the old niche MMOs used to fill.
I see MOBAs and ARPGs as pulling those away from MMORPGs proper who came to see what all the hubbub was about in the wake of WoW, leaving a larger percentage of the playerbase made up of fans of the genre's more traditional benefits.

Titan did exist and it was probably an MMOFPS.
If you watched the Q&A you would know that one of the guys asked if this was Titan and they told him that they used the assets from Titan to make Overwatch.
And it makes sense.
In the start cinematic you saw the robot invasion, that were probably going to be the enemies.
Blizzard made the character creator (Thats what they used to make all the chars)
They made classes (The 12 different heroes that are there so far)
They said that they tried with more abilities and upgrades but there was too much going on.(They just used class abilities they had already made for Titan)
The armor the different heroes are wearing are just gear sets from Titan reused on the heroes.
The few special heroes like the monk and turret robot have probably been added after the decision to scrap Titan and turn the remains of it into a team based FPS.
I concur with the title of the thread. This game will be fun for people for about 3 weeks, like every other FPS, then forgotten. I won't buy it just like I haven't bought the last 200 flash in the pan shooters that come out and everyone froths about for 10 days.

Team Fortress 2 was released in 2007. People are still playing it today.
Planetside 2, Quake 3, Battlefield 4. All these games have strong active online communities.
Then there's COD.
It's a massive genre.
Just because you are not a part of an active community does not mean they don't exist.

So you're assuming it's going to be a mainstay franchise just because blizzard developed it. Right.
There have absolutely been hundreds of one off shooters with no staying power released. It's a massive genre, because there are far more insignificant games than there are power houses. Good luck with that. Everyone will keep buying BF and CoD, and this will be forgotten in a month from release, because that's what happens to FPS games.

Much more of a fine dinning kind of guy than a McDonald's customer.
Never looked at LoL and tend to use the game as a disparagement. People may be looking for MOBAs and the next LoL, but I am still waiting for an updated Everquest. Have zero interest in e-sports and laugh every time I hear the term.
..... and no Everquest NOT! is not anything close to being a successor for Everquest or Everquest II. It is Eve in tights meets LoL.

Have you played Destiny? other than it being a pseudo MMO shooter please tell me what is so different about it than other millions of shooter on the market? and yet because of the name Bungie attached to it..the game had jaw dropping success.
You under estimate the name of Blizzard. yes it is just another arena style game but it is by Blizzard.
It looks extremely cartoony / weird. Not sure what to make of it.
I thought it looked like Unreal Tournament in the beginning but it looks very different now, it's not something I'm into.
Not everything that is not ultra realistic looking is cartoony. Infact it looks nothing like cartoon. It is as if you people struggle with what to call a game in terms of looks when it doesn't have realistic graphics and always come to the easiest available word 'cartoon'.
Comments
And visa versa.
Blizzard is landing in every game genre, taking all the good things from those genres and improving on them.
I have no doubt Overwatch is going to be yet another hit. Yet another hit I will be playing religiously.

Be the Ultimate Ninja! Play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN today!
when has blizzard EVER started a franchise as mmo?
wont happen, that's way too risky.
if the franchise works, we know where it will end
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
yea, right?
it surely does
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"

WoW graphics with TF2, Firefall gameplay.
Nothing innovative or new here.
Move along.
If you actually believe this to be true, you are a complete fool.
Chalk me up as one of those who just wants to pop in, play a game, and be done.
It's all Hearthstone and Town of Salem for me these days. Hopefully, this will make the cut.
I am not playing this. What is the damn point? Be a hero?
I like playing a game foremost for the adventure and then challenge, best when interacting with lots of other people.
6 vs 6 won't do.
Also, they lost me with their fancy looking animation, that screams hype. Looks like a Pixar rip off.
