They probably saw what a total shitshow firefall was and said na MMO shooter ain't gona work let's just make another e-sport lobby shooter than everyone else has already done. I'm sure i'll try this game but I don't expect much.
Dunno why everyone wants to hate this game, it looks interesting to me. Guess it just because it is blizzard, if a indie company were to release the exact same in game footage the hype would of been all over the place.
Be it a unreal/TF2 combined beast, who cares what it is inspired from? Do you play those games? If so then why just stick with them? It is a new franchise from a company that has never done anything similar to it before. Why do we have to compare it to other titles that really is not the same?
If you think about it makes sense, they have been talking about Titan for some time (2 years? I really dont know now) Then they say Titan "project" (the key here is the project thing) and suddenly... POP a new game comes magically from nowhere?
This is the revealing factor: TIME --> They stopped Titan and show a great gameplay (very polished) demo? I bet Overwatch have lots of what Titan (project) was going to be.
But don't be afraid, maybe they go ahead adding some semi-MMO features, like a "socia hub" where you can hang around between combats, instanced housing and shops, Im thinking about APB Reloaded style.
Of course this was Titan, imo there is enough evidence to assume this.
I bet they were trying to come up with a Destiny type game, based in this overwatch universe and decided to just stop dumping money into a project that was a average MMO when it could be excel simply as a Team-based competitive shooter.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

No project Titan was the biggest most complex MMO project ever attempted. Overwatch is about 10% of what Project Titan was - they reused assets and some gameplay elements. But the overall scope of what project Titan - was so ambitious that it simply didn't work - it was like 4 complete MMOS combined into a single game. And yes I've talked to inside sources at Blizzard who've tested different parts of real Project Titan before it was scrapped - overwatch is a very small portion overall.

Basically nobody knows how to make a good MMO anymore. Not even Blizzard does.
Overwatch simply uses what was a combat gameplay of the game, and possibly some kind of PvP battleground mode.
However from what i seen in videos so far, it looks terrible.
Surely like always , Blizzard name will be enough to bring reviews and fans flocking. But its quite sad progression for such "creative giant"
On the end Blizzard keeps on churning simplified-streamlined versions of allready existing games to make them more acessible for non gamers. That is their secret.
Like Interplay had moto back in the day " For gamers by gamers" Blizzard should have: "For non gamers"
It would be funny if true. It just doesn't make sense though. Titan was hyped up, then scrapped. Why would Blizzard want to kill that hype? The only thing i can think of, is because it might've failed, so they renamed it to something else. It sill wouldn't make sense though. It's also not uncommon for developers to borrow or use resources from dead projects and put them into another project.
Perhaps expectations/hype were higher than the quality of the game they could realistically deliver, so they presumably scrapped it and "released the same lesser game with adequately acceptable hype levels".
This puts the game in a mode where its community and success builds off of a flash market campaign followed by immediate hands on experiences, rather than years of hype leading to a major disappointment. TBH, I think there are a lot of shooters that look more fun than Overwatch.
They probably saw what a total shitshow firefall was and said na MMO shooter ain't gona work let's just make another e-sport lobby shooter than everyone else has already done. I'm sure i'll try this game but I don't expect much.
I wonder if you hit the nail on the head here. On one hand I want to say a small project like Firefall would not be something Blizzard thought much about, but on the other hand it had a former Blizz dev heading it and both visually and conceptually resembles an overwatch MMORPG. Too many coincidences to disregard.
Great thinking dude.
Edit: And Kano, if you know, then tell us if this guy is right. Scrapping all but 10% of an MMORPG and then marketing it as a premium shooter is bizarre at best.
Did you even bother reading your own link? They clearly said the Titan project is definitely finished. A handful of the team that was working on Titan stayed together, but whatever they churn out isn't going to be anywhere near the scale Titan was being made into. So even if Overwatch uses a lot of the designs, plot, core ideas that was going to be in Titan, does not mean Blizzard simply changed the name from Titan to Overwatch and just came out and said they were scrapping development for Titan just for shits and giggles.
You're trying to make nothing into something.
Using some of Titan's assets but not to the same scale as Titan? Using the Same Dev Team (brain trust and vision) as Titan basically? Same or similar Core ideas?
I'd call it Titan Lite. or Titan Jr., I would not ever call it an separate game. To me it most definitely IS a form of Titan from the sounds of it (assuming all is true).
Point of view and how each of us sees things differently.
Blizzard will call it what they want to. It doesn't bother me if Blizzard did use Titan's assets and ideas and scale them way down... most of us here know that the days of large detailed immersive MMORPGs with virtual worlds is over. At least the Players will enjoy some of what Titan was hoped to be rather than all of it tossed in the trash bin.
Old news. Overwatch is indeed a portion of what "Titan" was about, but just a small bit. Imagine how sad it would be to simply throw 7 years of development down the drain... Overwatch is just some use they found for some designs they did on "Titan".
Well likely what happened is they were making a bit different gameplay but decided to go back to a faster easier approach in a fps.It supports Epsort that they always rely on,doesn't take as much assets/resources,easier smaller maps and far less depth and systems. So basically whip something out faster using the exact same game assets and ideas.
VERY different game, well yeah easy to say if your taking the EXACT same game and removing it's entire depth of design and just turning it into a simple fps.It is similar to say H1Z1,likely started out a grand idea but ended up a one map Battle royal because it had to be rushed out to make money and SOE was selling off. That is what OW is to me just a big time watered down version of what Titan might of or could have been.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I guess if a Blizzard spokesman was not a Blizzard employee, what he would really be saying is Overwatch is an unfinished version of Titan,a much lesser game, take 4 parts, remove 3 and claim it is totally different.
Like baking an apple pie, remove the pastry, the sugar, cinnamon and all your left with is apples, guess what plain apples can said to be significantly different than an apple pie.

And then they added different ingredients to make a a strawberry pie instead. Blizzard doesnt sell plain apples.. thats why its making billions of profit..
Someone actually called this not too long ago on these forums. There was a post somewhere about what Titan actually was and this seems to be it.
Posted Sep 24th 2014
"""Players would be able to select from classes with names like Reaper, Jumper, Titan, Ranger, and Juggernaut, each of which had its own special combat abilities and items, according to a source. Jumpers, for example, would be agile scouts with a teleport ability and the ability to quickly leap in and out of combat. Titans were tanks, while Rangers were snipers with cloaking and other abilities (think Nova from StarCraft II and the ill-fated StarCraft Ghost)."""
So the recent interview from Blizzard talking about how they scrapped Titan was just a load of BS because some of these leaks were actually true.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"

Not bizarre if you want to recoup some of the cost of assets.

To the OP...
So what?
