Having played mostly Wow and EvE, EvE being my active mmo, I have to go with EvE.
It's got everything. Carebears, rollplayers, pvp and a never ending sence of danger. You can support your in game activities with plex if you're not into farming and making isk or if you know how to make money you can pay for your sub by purchasing plex from the market with your hard earned isk.
Well you can kind of tell by my post history that my flavor of MMO can change with a stiff breeze.
At the moment I am playing and enjoying Rift. It is not the end all be all, but I am choosing to play it over WoD if that tells you anything. It has nice graphics, the ability to have multiple class builds on one character, an abundance of events/quests/dungeons. The community I have encountered there has been super awesome & nice, and with the free realm transfers I just hopped over to Faeblight last night (the RP-PvE server) and had some very fun RP last night ^.^ (there is a lowbie inn near the starter area for Guardians very similar to Goldshire for Alliance on WoW RP servers).
WoD was fun at first, but then I saw it more as a single player game. You do your little Garrison dailies by yourself & most of the leveling and other activities by yourself. Even when you get to play with people it sucks. I transferred servers like 2 times (waste of money) to see if I could find a decent community. Every time I had a question I was met with such vulgar hostility (why?!) and one of the dungeons I ran; me & a few people made a mistake on a boss and oh boy the stink this one player made. It was ridiculous. So yeah it's polished to a tee and has a lot of features as well, but I'm not going to pay $15 a month for basically a single player game with an occasional multiplayer experience where the other players are mostly jerks and asshats.
I still try and play GW2 here and there, but something about it just isn't pulling me in. I wanted to love this game so much, and for some reason I even liked the original Guild Wars more. GW2 sounded amazing on paper... perhaps I haven't given it a good enough chance. I was a little miffed that I was running around a level 10 I click on a scroll or potion or something then suddenly I'm level 20? I hardly have a clue what I'm doing other than story quests (once again single player game feeling).
I keep hearing ESO is now great, and I wouldn't mind trying it just wish it had a trial or something. I heard SWTOR is good, but I'm not a huge star wars or space/sci-fi fan (unless we're talking System Shock 2) and I've heard your play quite is limited unless you spend money. I've played a ton of games in the past including Aion/FFXIV/Archeage fun at first but then lost interest. A lot of people on here praise EVE but maybe it was too complicated for me or I just didn't get it.
At this point other than Rift and possibly getting ESO I'm nearly considering just trying MUDs.

The only MMO I'm playing (and only when friends ask) is LOTRO. Mostly single-player these days. 7 Days to Die on a dedicated server is my "go to" game right now.
However, I'm currently starting up The Repopulation and even though the alpha is pretty rough around the edges, it's fun. Hopefully that lasts.
Sadly even with all the changes FFXI is on my list as the best overall game with the most diversified content as well.I have been all over from every type of game and just nothing sticks it is always so boring so fast and the combat always done terribly bad.I would re-roll a brand new player and have more fun in FFXI than any game on the market right now.
To show how bad the market has become developers have no clue how to be creative so their main focus has turned to pvp.Baffles the heck out of me because yes pvp is popular but NOT in the RPG setting, that si why fps's and Moba's rule the pvp scene because that is the ONLY focus on the game. When you try to make a game a jack of all trades it becomes a master of nothing but junk.

I've played over 2 dozen mmo's in my 14 year mmo gaming history and this is by far one of the most difficult questions to answer about mmo's. Without spending too much time on the matter and just thinking on the top of my head I feel like every couple years there's a new "best" mmo even if it isn't the most financially profitable.
At the moment Eve Online may be the best mmo for a hardcore gamer, I love the game and I've had 6-7 playthroughs of a couple months each since 2004.
When it comes to casual gamers I think WoW still has the edge though because of how dumbed down and easy-moded it has become. To a hardcore player like myself I have no interest in ever returning to WoW, but it's financial success speaks for itself as to how players feel.
Role players I think favor SWTOR atm, due to it being one of if not thee best story-driven mmo's out there. Don't get me wrong I hated how unimpressive the game was at launch, but the one thing they did do good at was class stories, general quest stories, and companion quests.
and this is from a hardcore pvper currently playing ESO lol.

For me ESO and Darkfall. I love harcore pvp but sometimes its hard to find good fights. So i also enjoy some less hardcore easy to find action pvp in ESO. ESO is also coming along very nicely and im spending more time in it then anything else.
Originally posted by HazardParalyze Thank you for you answes so far. I think you misunderstood my post a bit. I want to know which mmo is your favourite. Not which one is the best.
My favorites currently are Planetside 2 and GW2. Planetside 2 because I was a huge PS1 junkie back in the day and PS2 comes close to bringing back that same PVP magic. GW2 is my other favorite because it's one of the few games that dares to be different from the payment model, to no trinity, no quest hubs, no raids, etc. Some people like me get sick of the same old, same old MMO formula. Others don't.

Lol. Another great post by BCbully.
There's actually no hard evidence that ESO's population is really doing well or poorly right now, Zenimax still hasn't released official subscription numbers, which generally would indicate they are under-performing at this point.
If it was really something they were proud of, they'd be shouting it from the rooftops.

Sorry but ESO will never eclipse wow, the game the eventually does isn't even in concept phase yet.

WOW is the best of the theme parks. They just offer the most to players by far.
I don't play sandbox MMO's.
Marvel Heroes is fun, but I wouldn't label it as an MMO. Nor do I think it's deep enough to really compare with them anyway. It's my favorite ARPG though.
I want your opinion. What MMO do you think is currently the best and why is that the case.
I´m pretty new to MMOs but my guess so far is guild wars 2. It lacks end game but it is imo the closest to a next-gen mmo, because it has some nice innovation.
So what are your favourites?
For me the best games ever:
1. Wow
2. Swtor
My worst disappointment with latest expansions:
1. Wow
2. Swtor (edit: actually not so bad at all, revoking this claim)
Opinions will differ, but I believe the one that will always be the best is the one that (insert game company of choice) shut down and you can't play it ever again.

That and the numbers that people are throwing around was marketing extrapolations (Not real data) from none other than Superdata. Even then they used retail sales as their sample which assumes they will subscribe but no way to know for how long.
Not saying ESO is doing poorly, but I am saying this "1M" subscriber number that's been tossed around, is 100% false info.
Personally, all the mmo's today that are released are lacking from the older 1st gen ones. If I had to pick a "current" mmo I would say wildstar, I am having a ton of fun with it, even tho the challenges are tough I still enjoy they look and mechanics of the game it self.

Considering that WoW makes more money in a month than ESO has yet to earn total in its six month life span makes it hard to believe his prediction to come true. I mean sure, it "could" happen I guess. But highly,...very highly unlikely it will happen.

Eve Online without a doubt.
WoW if you like themeparks.
Anything after it just dont compare....wich is so sad as these 2 mmo's date from 2003 and 2004.....
Studio's dont try hard enough anymore they are in for the quick cast grab.
Lol. Another great post by BCbully.
Eve Online and The Secret World in that order.
For me...
Guild Wars(1) : My all time favorite and best arena pvp
FFXIV ARR : Best themepark
Eve Online : Best sandbox
Destiny : Best Mmoish fps
Warhammer Online : Best RvR
Diablo 3 : Best online arpg
OP why don't you ask what do you think is the best food at the moment?
You will get as much difference in respons with the food question as with the MMO.
