Red used to be a highly popular car color but its not the most popular these days. So, if you like Red cars dont get angry that its not as popular as it was in the past.
And, yes, this has been an analogy.
So, those who liked red cars should just shut up and drive white cars, eh? Be happy with that?
Wildstar tried to recreate Vanilla WoW by catering to hardcore raiders and NCsofts' last financial statement indicates they're down to 100k subscribers.
Now you people want to recreate EQ1 with hardcore leveling/death penalty/rare camping? Given how vastly more popular Vanilla WoW was than EQ1 I have my doubts they could even achieve Wildstar's level of popularity.
Sure a small studio or kickstarter might be able to put something together to cater to this theme... but a big budget MMO? The investors might as well be throwing their money away. For a game that will be lucky to pull in 75k subscribers you aren't going to get high end graphics/animations and the content will be limited at first... hell, you might as well go back and play EQ1 again.

I don't care what WildStar tried to be, it was an awful game no matter what. The basic gameplay was just terrible. Stop trying to use it as proof that this or that doesn't work, it only proves that bad games are bad.
If I want to play just a game I could play SC or D2 or any of a number of great single player games etc, MMOPRG can be so much more.
Not to me. They are worse games to me, until the dev wise up and start making them more like games, less like worlds.
Yes we get that, you don't personally like MMORPG. I'm sorry but that is all it comes down to at this point. You do not enjoy this genre so you want it to move towards a genre you actually like. Most people on these boards actually do like MMORPG and want to discuss them. We have danced around this subject so much but the only conclusion I have reached is you simply do not enjoy MMOPRG. That is absolutely fine but please just come to some self awareness on the subject. What the average person defines a MMORPG as is a game you do not want to play.
Everquest wasn't/isn't exactly blazing trails or leading the pack.
Since I've been involved with and following Landmark I must of heard a hundred times "The EQ community wont like this", "The EQ community expects that...", "The EQ community...", The EQ community". How big is that community exactly? 50k? 100k people?
Don't you think the EQ brand would be better served by looking at what the rest of the gaming community wants? I see this recent shake up as something that could possibly unshackling EQ from the past and allow it to move forward in a more progressive way. There's no question that Dave and his team had to show their cards (EQN) and what was shown to Nova must not have been the nuts.
Only time will tell, but am I the only one that sees this move as a potential positive for the franchise?
Definitely not, that is what happened to FFXIV,they turned it into another WOW.Sure if you want to shift some WOW players around to other games, that might divvy up the money a little but it does absolutely NOTHING to giving gamer's CHOICE on game design because they are all copy cat designs.
To keep it simple,we already have a ton of Wow clones, why would we need more? There is already a massive choice for those that like that type of gaming,we need more diversity in this genre not less or as is almost none.
That is what EVERY industry in the world does,it offers CHOICE,not everyone is going to drive a pickup or wear Blue Jeans or eat McDonalds ect ect.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Please stop quoting that dribble. We block it for a reason.
My suggested easy fix since they seem to be stepping away from the core Everquest model? Change the name. Call it Norrath Reborn or Norrath: A Dimension Sundered (NADS for short) or Norrath: New Beggings. Boom, keep the world, lose the mechanics. Win/Win. The problem I have is using the name, just like Sacred 3 (ugh) if you aren't going to make a "true" sequel call it something else.
If I want to play just a game I could play SC or D2 or any of a number of great single player games etc, MMOPRG can be so much more.

no .. i don't like the old MMORPGs .. but the new ones like marvel heroes? i am game.
However, I would agree that EQN was on track to completely miss the mark. I hope the new company comes in and eviscerates the project, and restarts it from scratch. The IP is huge and has great potential.
Scrap it ... it is not impossible.
Restart from scratch? Not in a million years. I doubt anyone is going to invest AAA money in an old concept.

Exactly. Wildstar was nothing like Old EQ. Wow is heavily Raid driven, too. I certainly do not care.
I enjoy reading people who point at one game with one feature, maybe 2 or 3, and decide, "It will not work." I agree that they would get nowhere near WoW's numbers, but what MMO has?
What "us people" want is the RPG back in the MMORPG genre. Get rid of map markers. Get rid of quest markers. Bring back true exploration and bigger worlds NOT traversed easily by travel points. NOT everyone and their dog need to play it.
I am curious to see just how many would, though. It may "fail" miserably. It could also do quite well. Another boon: *I* would stop my whining posting here and play the damn game

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

In some games, you can turn off the map, the quest markers, and you always can decide NOT to use fast travel.
The game you want is already in today's games. You just need to turn off some features. And not everyone will play like that ... but since you probably don't want to play with the hack-n-slash crowd anyway, I do see a problem.
The game was unplayable by people who didn't want to devote their life to a game.
That is completely false, EQ had plenty of casual players. I won't be the only one who corrects you on that.
There were ppl who played once a week, there were ppl who played 6 days a week.
There were guilds who raided once on a saturday, there were guilds who raided every workday.
Plenty of ppl played EQ casually.
EQ even had players who barely leveled at all and all they did was talk in PoK to others and do a bit of tradeskilling.
Yes...you played when you could and when you wanted. There was nothing saying you had to devote your life to it. It's only those people who feel they have to play to keep up with the majority in levels, gear, etc. that say those things or felt that way about it.
The leader board people concerned about their 1337 status within the community.
I don't care about ompeting with others on levels or gear. I found EQ boring as hell and very slow to progress. To a point where if you sit down for an hour you barely see anything happen. That's not fun.
Are you really going to tell me that you didn't pull at least 4 hour at a time playing EQ?
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
EQ had more than 450K fans at its height, I doubt they have forgotten what they liked about the game and I'm also sure they would be intrigued by a reboot. There are also new audiences that might be intrigued by a modern version of EQ.
A lot of jump ship when WOW came out.
They don't have to forget .. they just have to realize that there are now better (subjective) alternatives. No one says a fan have to stay a fan forever.
They may be intrigued .. but will enough of them be willing to pay a sub to wait in line to kill a boss? I doubt that.
You doubt a lot of things with no data to back it up. People are jumping ship from WoW even as we speak. Do we take that to mean games like WoW are no longer wanted either? Your beloved F2P games have huge turnover rates, do we take that to mean people actually don't like the business model? Every game has a natural lifespan as people get tired of one setting and starting looking for something different or updated or for a plethora of reasons. What I can say though is that few if any of the modern games have shown even a fraction of the growth and retention rates that the older games had. One could even surmise the reason being over-all dissatisfaction with the direction the genre is going?

Games today act like any other product. You don't keep the same level of customers when the marketing blitz is over that you had during the blitz.
