And the current trend is that "visionaries" from various development houses are minting millions based on talk alone. It isnt worth it to invest any time or money on promises anymore since that is the bulk of the "development" that is coming out off late.
Let them make a game worth buying and I will buy it. Until then, good luck to these guys and no thanks.

No it is not too much.
But don't you see?
If you ask for that, you are going to get the same games you hate now, every time.
Sorry to burst your bubble , but that is how it works.
To an extent, but not really.
Companies have been putting out "the same old thing" MMOs for a while now, and behind a pile of "non successes" and several longtime players getting out of the MMO business or getting sold (FC and SOE to name a couple) the message is finally getting through that it is time for "something different".
The only thing that changes corporate minds is projects not living up to their expectations/funding and people getting fired. In a word, fear.
This fear in the MMO space makes a company go one of two ways: the will either leave the MMO space, and instead make "less risky" non-MMO and mobile games, or they will make "different" MMOs. We have seen quite a bit of the former, but not much of the latter, yet. (Or they will put out a bunch of low budget crap that is virtually impossible to not make your money back on, ala Cryptic)
I think at the end of this shakeout in the MMO space is that fewer MMOs will be made (at least non-cheapo crap ones) but those will be better quality.
And this KS/crowdfunding deal for MMOs will pass as well, because all the resources needed/involved to make a good MMO simply can't be raised in the same way it could be for a single player game. (And for SC, they haven't delivered yet, either.)
So I am with those who will pay (and even pay a sub) for an MMO that: 1 exists, and 2. is good. But nothing else.
Come on guys have you people not been fooled enough by Brad McQuaid! The odds this game is released and is what the devs say it will be are around 20%. I wouldn't have this game on my radar until I see a working beta with all the hype they are saying it will have. But the odds for putting trust into Brad McQuaid to actually pull off a great game again is around 10%.
Just can't put any trust in him, fool me once, fine, twice no way.
I feel really fooled. A guy failed at managing a game back in 2007, now he wants to make another one. That takes nothing away from the ideas that EverQuest, Vanguard and now Pantheon were based upon.
Here we are 8 years later and still no one else is making mmorpgs worth playing, so it really just boils down to people trying to back an idea they love, not necessarily show support for any developer in particular. We are tired of the same old crap from this genre and want to get the word out that there's still a sizable number of people that will play a game like Pantheon. It will be the success of such indie projects that will one day prove to game studios and investors that mmorpgs are still worth investing in.
Whether you like Pantheon or McQuaid is irrelevant. You are doing the genre a disservice by bashing a game solely based on the past mistakes of one of its developers.

My support of Pantheon has absolutely nothing to do with Brad McQuaid beyond the ideas that the game is based on. Even if the game fails, I would regret not speaking up to promote the game tenets which will make for an excellent mmorpg.

Problem is, you can not remove that stink of all the inept and shaddy crap he has done, from the project he "promotes", no matter its promised features or tenets or whatever.
And using history as a guide, his participation in ANY project weighs heavily against its success (no need to go into all that history here, everyone that cares to know all the BS, can or does).
And don't forget, he and his cronies have and are pushing to make this game with donated, "free" money (the acceptance and use of which carrying practically no legal constraints or responsibilities).
If his project is so great, let McQuaid get his own damn financing (the people providing such are far less likely to fall for "the bullshit"), and then people can decide to buy a finished product or not.
The fact that McQuaid can't get financing says quite a lot.

Did you really just say that any team looking to build an MMORPG should get financing through the same suits that are obviously clueless about what a real MMORPG should even look like? If he gets financing through the normal means, we will be looking at just another MOBA&FPSMMOinMMORPGclothing type of game... not a real MMORPG.
What i said, is that if McQuaid can't get financing, there is a reason for it, and no... it has nothing to do with "suits that are obviously clueless about what a real MMORPG should even look like".
It has to do with the fact no one in the industry will give McQuaid 10 cents to make a game, whatever his visions are telling him.
In business, when people in a particular industry won't give a notable person any support, they have reasons, and those are far more than people on the outside will ever know, but they have them.
The "suits" couldn't give a crap if an MMO is a "full MMORPG" or not, they care that they have confidence in a project and the people in charge of it. And that such a project will be profitable.
With McQuaid's obviously radioactive reputation, no company will touch him.
And if the "people in the know" won't, then the chances are pretty high that no one else should either. (Or give him 10 cents.)

I know you don't want facts and logic to interrupt you debate, but there's pretty much only two guys who have gone out and developed a second MMO after releasing a successful one, and that's Garriot and McQuaid. I don't know how much blow McQuaid snorted, but probably less than it costs to have Russia send you to space and McQuaid's second MMO was by almost all measures more successful than Garriot's.
If McQuaid had burnt all those bridges, why did SOE hire him back?
It's not 2006, publishers and venture capitalists don't think MMO's are the next big thing. That doesn't mean everyone in the industry thinks McQuaid is a crook. Garriott had to use crowfunding, SOE had to use crowfunding, Blizzard stopped making their MMO, so I guess they're all crooks?
Seriously, what is more bizarre, Space Citizen's $40 million worth of vaporwear or the $10K that Pantheon raised?
For someone whom does not give a rat's ass about this game, you sure are persistent in your attempts to sabotage it. "In sale's pitch mode"... I suppose you do not remember how Vanguard came along to the point it did? It only looked like it was "in sales pitch mode" as well for quite some time. The only hope here is that they stay in sales pitch mode until the game is actually ready for release.
Three posts have I typed in regards to Pantheon. THREE all in all. If that to you is persistence and amounting to sabotage...then gods save you from all the boogeymen under your bed. But seriously, you should really do something about that sense of paranoia that seems to be devouring you from inside out. And this I say with genuine concern.
Besides, this game is still on the drawing board and therefore is not even on my radar. I really couldnt care less about this game right now but I only post here in order to reply to your rather entertaining posts. And trust me, you dont even want to start talking about Vanguard. That game had so many issues and reasons for tanking multiple times over which were directly related to Brad...that you would feel sorry for bringing Vanguard into your little crusade even before all the facts are laid bare on the table.
-
Not at all, but I should point out... Path of Exile is not an MMORPG. Sorry to ruin your fun.
Yes it is an ARPG. But how does that change in the least the fact that, these guys called GGG came like a bolt out the blue with a dream and passion to create their own version on their favourite games: Diablo 1 and 2. Unlike these recent self-touted messiahs of MMOs (Brad being one of them), GGG actually brought their dreams to realization and earned the trust of their donators before asking for any donations. They pretty much did everything what these messiahs are claiming to be able to do, without asking people to fork up money even before the game barely leaves the drawing board. And GGG is but one of the more recent successful companies to stand up on their feet with their own strength. Just so you know there are quite a few companies from yesteryears who have also successfully put out their games without pulling shady tricks and easy con-jobs. But too bad you have drunk deep from the bowl of mystery punch that Brad has to offer, which has foolishly led you to believe that without your liabilities exempt "donations" to him and his company alone, the future of gaming will be very dark and foreboding.

The only unwarranted rabid attacks were your own to begin with. My responses often mirror those I am responding to.
Ah and there it is again... "Preferably without having some forum warrior threaten them with crazy talk, into backing a potential piece of turd." I have threatened no one, except those company staff member types that do not want to see an MMORPG like Pantheon get made. God forbid the industry begins having intelligent and in-depth MMORPGs, with some soul in them, as an option... The whole damn industry would implode on itself. And the "into backing a potential piece of turd" talk again... You truly do care about Pantheon specifically not being made. It begs the question of why.
If "easy mode" and "on the rails" and "hand holding" and "just buy your achievements" and "no thinking necessary" fit your definition of a great MMORPG, then yes... Pantheon is a piece of turd.
And you really should reread your posts before you hit the [Post Message] button below. It might come to surprise you as to how much hypocrisy you spew with such careless remorselessness. Your unwarranted attack to call me a shill was quite the epitome of hypocrisy. Any third person sifting through this thread will see your posts to be nothing less than overzealous shilling for Brad McQuaid and his pet project. The irony of you stating that your responses mirror who you respond to and firing your mouth (or fingers) off with the very first post (which wasnt even addressed to you) by calling me a shill...is something truly hilarious.
And since you seem to have difficulty in reading posts before running off the deep end, let me reiterate in vain hopes that you will catch my sentiments regarding this game at least this time around. I will buy this game if it is worth my money. And I dont care about the baggage that this Brad McQuaid is hauling around from the past, I will still buy it and play it if is worth my money. Let him provide me with a game which I feel is worth my time and resources and I will gladly pay him for it. Until then, he can go dream on someone else's expense. Because if he still needs free internet money to fund him after being in this industry for so long...then he sure as hell doesnt deserve a single penny from me.

Comparing AIDS to cancer now are you?
Both of those are bizarre, without the shadow of a doubt.
But seriously, I hope Star Citizen is able to deliver at least what it promises. Otherwise the genre of MMOs will be dealt a catastrophic blow from which it may never recover from.

SOE hired him back for about 10 minutes and then he was gone again, and as I recall there was "consultant" in there somewhere in Mcquaid's title, which means he likely had next to no responsibilities (and certainly no authority) and thus didn't really "do" much of anything.
The fact remains that if McQuaid were so great, why can't he get hired by anyone? Even as a third/fourth/fifth banana?
It is one thing to go out on your own and start your own deal, but McQuaid already did that and crashed his company into the ground, and screwed over Mircosoft and SOE in the process.
People need to get over the fact that McQuaid is making another game. There are a lot of people who want to see the kind of game he is proposing, and the work the Pantheon team has put forth thus far is solid. It may be mostly concept at this point, but theres nothing else out there that even remotely resembles what they have planned for Pantheon so they are gaining more support and a larger community every day.

QFT.
No really. Nothing to add here. Apart from "gimme this game, don't screw up midway!"
MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.
Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?
If i wanted another EQ,i already got it and a far better game doing it in FFXI,also the largest game on the market.
So Pantheon if it is aiming at the WEQ FFXI type market,it has some heavy shoes to fill and a LOT of content and a LOT of systems to be able to pry me from FFXi.
I would like to hear 3 areas Pantheon is going to deliver in a state that is "better than",so i can form my own opinion as to weather it is a game worthy of being in my top 5 games of all time.
1 FFXi
2 Vanguard
3 FFXIV
4 EQ2
5 EQ1
Pantheon does not have to compete versus VG anymore, but i still have 4 other choices thaty Pantheon has to be better than to warrant my time.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Yes but what is the project now? Is it still a general fantasy MMORPG, or is the project now a very Christian MMORPG?
Removing Evil Races, Sanctuaries not Citys and the make up of the team are increasingly suggesting the latter.

I do believe that discussion began and ended. The end was that that particular team no longer works on Pantheon.
I must have missed that, but I do not know if that makes things better or worse. SO Brad is on his third team working on this game?

People will come and go on a team thats largely operating pro bono at this point. They have a few very solid people now who are heavily invested like Joppa and Monte. Kilsin the community manager has also been invaluable to the development process by cultivating and communicating with the playerbase to transmit player feedback to the developers. I don't foresee any of those guys going anywhere, and they will probably pick up new people as they get further into development. Especially if and when they get better funding.
Just a matter of time.
As far as comparing Pantheon with that list of games, go read the tenets and features page on the Pantheon website. If you still think those games resemble Pantheon, then read it again and continue doing so until you understand just how much is missing from those games that they intend to have in Pantheon.

Proof?
Do the internet look ups yourself... he did not work for SOE more than a few months. Fairly certain "consultant" was in his announced job title. Do you know what a consultant is?
The fact remains that if McQuaid were so great, why can't he get hired by anyone? Even as a third/fourth/fifth banana?
It is one thing to go out on your own and start your own deal, but McQuaid already did that and crashed his company into the ground, and screwed over Mircosoft
Proof?
Self evident. He would not have pocketed $45k from the last patch of donated Pantheon money, had he any "paying work". Or prospects for any. Also self evident that MS pulled out of Vanguard, and Sigil fired all of its employees in the parking lot one Friday. Those are known facts and beyond contestation.
and SOE in the process.
Proof?
Several threads at the time that Smed was pissed he bought a mostly non-functional Vanguard, which he bought because it was characterized as "mostly finished". Look it up yourself.
But that ain't this.
*POOF* ?
The proof is in business, your reputation is everything. And McQuaid's is for shit in the video game industry. Otherwise he'd be doing something other than begging for money to make another "vision" MMO otherwise made with free labor. And this after his "professional dev team" quit behind all the BS going on.
Proof is not need when "the thing speaks for itself". (Res ipsa loquitur)

Now after release, repeating the very same words from back then would be like preaching to the choir on this site.

There are two things I know as fact.
1. This game will be made. The team working on it right now do so for the love of the project and thats a big step up from people who work on something for the love of money.
2. The developers on this project understand the core concepts of what a true MMORPG is and this game will inject some of that back into a genre full of single player games that you can play online.
But that ain't this.
Get over it.
QFT.
