[Preview] Utherous: First Look: Utherous

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

We sat down with the folks from Utherous at PAX East to have a first look at their new game.  Using the Atavism MMO Creator, Thomas Timothy and his team have created a sandbox where players can build up their towns, siege other towns, or take on the local wildlife and other beings inhabiting the world of Utheria.  Paired with Bionic Marine Command Online in a Steam bundle that recently got greenlit, Utherous shows a very strong sense of identity within a full-to-bursting genre.

Sounds very interesting. Sounds almost like they are making the game, because of the fun of making the game, and not for the money that they can make. That makes them stand out in the current industry and the love for the game itself just might be enough to make this a success.

Actually, I think they're using Atavism for Unity, which is actually pretty interesting, but yeah, you will get some generic models. If that's the case, I don't know if world size even matters because I believe that you can simply do procedurally-generated worlds with it. That being said, I think that they seem to have some interesting systems built into it.

I really hope they will work on that website of theirs, its a huge turn-off. It presents the game really bad and it just shouts B rating out to anyone that looks at it.

We are actively working on the site. Super small team so everyone is wearing many hats right now!

Agreed the website looks awful. Also Utherous ~ uterus ... lmao

Watched their video and char models and animations look really bad.

my usual stupid question: Native Linux support ?

I like the death penalty mechanic, finally something novel and interesting. I do NOT like the stress mechanic (let's see how the final implementation works).

The video was done very early with stock models. We are hoping to get a new video up very soon. We have been focusing on world generation and the building features and will be redoing models soon

Been creeping on this game for a bit now. I get a good vibe from the guys running the show. Pumped to see how it turns out!

Looking forward to the new video and wish you all best of luck. Keeping a eye on the project.

But have to ask like Asm0deus mentioned why the name? Something you might reconsider?

"mythology of Utheria"  haha just thinking....

It should run native on Linux, we are aiming for a unified server for all platforms as well.

Sounds interesting, huge worlds that foster exploration make me giddy however the one caveat to this article is )or if it is I missed it) is if it is open world PvP or is the game PvE centric?

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Open World PvP is a huge component in the game but it will have many PvE aspects as well. Still working on the day to day balance, but we understand not everyone wants to PvP all the time.

Open world PvP? Ugg....why do devs keep doing this?

Unity said they removed the "Make MMO" button in Unity5 - so how the hell...

Utherous is a derivative of  Uther Pendragon, King Arthur's father, who's title was Builder of Kingdoms. With a building and kingdom focus in our game the name fit well.  We are hoping that with a bit more web presence the google "did you mean Uterus" will go away :)

Lol, guess it will keep me from looking it up at work

Some of the ideas are a nice throwback to older MMOs (needing to rest at a tavern ala SWG) however this game will be dominated by the largest guilds with the current mechanics, it will eventually break the game down and drive people away like it does in all games that reward power based on guild size. it creates a join the largest or lose mentality.

If they can remove the aspect of more land based on guild size idea they may end up with something decent on their hands.

Oh wait...this is open world PvP...another niche game it is...

Fine...don't let me edit my post.

    EDIT FOR ABOVE POST.

This is an open world PvP game so the change wont matter, this is going to be a niche game anyway.

It's a hot trending discussion topic.  Never as popular in practice as it is when being discussed on forums.

However, finally an MMO that is creating one-off encounters, something that's on my "imaginary ultimate MMO that will never be created"

I even have some suggestions to improve the system.

Each player character is assigned a unique ID, an instance is created with a certain class of content solo, co-op, group. It can be entered 1 thru X number of times with 1 thru X number of people depending on the class of content. Once completed by that player it is added to their unique ID so that they can only enter a set number of those types of content at a given rate.

It's easier explained with an example:

There are currently 10 solo dungeons available throughout the world.

Player 1 comes across one of these and enters. He completes it successfully, gets the unique loot/ability/resource/etc

Player 1 is now locked out of 9 of the other similar solo dungeons, however, by completing this fist dungeon they unlock the next branching tier of 5 unique dungeons (which they have to find)

If Player 1 fails his solo dungeon, he may be temporarily locked out from finding another dungeon or limited to 4 out of the remaining 9. Or if it's a truly special unique dungeon (of higher difficulty) perhaps that was his one and only chance to succeed and it instead is recycled into the pool of available dungeons.

This allows for players to explore and find unique content while not allowing "no-lifers" from simply finding all or most of the unique content and consuming it for themselves leaving everyone else with nothing.

These unique instances spawn and are regulated by a rating system of their difficulty and quality of rewards, simpler easier ones might respawn once a week because the reward is fairly basic and common, but a legendary instance might only spawn once and remain until defeated, but those that failed are either blocked from additional attempts for certain time period or have failed and are permanentaly blocked. These unique instances are also timed so that players can afk and occupy them while trickling in friends to try to zerg the content. X number can enter and have X time to succeed (in most cases).

Of course, in my mind it's not really gear that you acquire in these, it's skills/abilities to build your characters with. So you might stumble upon someone with a lightning bolt spell that no one else has.

There's a bit more to it than this, but you get the gist, I hope you guys can pull off the unique content design I've been waiting.

"Open world PvP? Ugg....why do devs keep doing this?"

    yup

    pointless game for most then

aiming for niche isn't necessarily a bad thing though

even if it was not PVP focused, being guild focused certainly means that i personally will not need to follow this game

There are so many carebear mmo's  on the market and they all flopped after launch, some faster then others but who wants to fight monsters all day when you can play Skyrim...or ESO...

Look at Eve Online one of the most succesfull sandbox mmo's ever created.

    Its still going strong today.

I hope one day we get to play an mmo with such depth in a fantasy setting like Eve Online.

Everything destructible, world pvp, zone domination,  building castles and towns, defending sov, attacking or raiding neighbours, become a real pirate or outlaw, after seeing how Archeage did everything wrong what could go wrong i realy lost hope something like Eve Online in a fantasy setting will not be created in my lifetime :(
