I was under the impression that this is a forum where we discuss a game in development, its various functionalities, features and the testing progress. That the information presented was not "made up on the spot" but a very brief summary of a complex topic well documented in various development and fan documents.
Continue your agitprop campaign then ... never mind me ....
Have fun
First I would like to offer a big ol LOL at your sentence about this being a game forum where we discuss blah blah blah. What you really should have said is this is a game forum where we only discuss the positives and heavily criticize anyone who posts their view, opinions or anything that can paint SC in a somewhat shitty light and label them as haters.
--> "We only discuss positives" .... Is that so ? Then i wonder where 70 % of the latest threads here in this mmorpg.com subforum - started on an almost daily basis - come from. Started by posters with IMHO a strong anti-SC bias.
With that out of the way I never said the topic was not well documented, just that Chris does sound like he doesn't know what the hell he is saying half the time.
--> I am sure if someone digs through hundreds of hours of videos of ANY person well known to the public one can always find a few minutes of speech that might not serve as a shining example for rhetoric training. And there are many many hours of video w.r.t. Chris Roberts. A recent example would be the BBC documentation.
The crew stations was very well documented by another dev and they explained their vision for it perfectly.
I'm sorry you seem to take all SC criticism directly to heart
--> I do not take ANYTHING related to a computer game "directly to heart".
but your typical response to any criticism is to either try and whitewash it
--> Is asking for proof when presented with baseless rumours and personal opinions presented as "the one and only truth" considered "whitewashing" in your opinion ? I call that: common sense.
or post a bunch of information that is loosely linked with the topic at hand to try and bury the argument.
--> If you scroll up you will see that my first response contained only links relevant to the topic and presenting some more in-depth information to the question discussed by Chris Roberts in this particular 10-f-t-C question. There was no criticism in there, no sarcastic remarks. Just information which was relevant to the topic - crew stations. NOT "loosely linked".
--> Any criticism was initiated by yourself as you called this "useless info" and got a fitting response to this remark.
Next time just post the actual dev article,
--> Scroll up. That is exactly what i did. Link to the answers of the developer actually working on that topic. The other links just sum it up in a condensed TLDR fashion or present it in another format (video instead of text).
say "this is a well written piece about crew stations" and be done with it but you are welcome to continue to quote my posts out of context even though you make yourself look foolish.
--> How can i "live with the shame of looking foolish to you" .... ? --> Actually .... I can very well live with it ... ;-)
--> Have fun
I'll just address your bullet points in order instead of inserting into the text and it becoming a unreadable mess.
There are posts about the game that are negative but if you look in them it's mostly the poster getting attacked for their opinions and being labelled a hater even when they bring rational ideas that are well written.
There are plenty of examples of people who are speaking in public who don't constantly ah and uh and you want to know why? Because they are experts on the subject and are passionate about what they are talking about. This is his dream and his passion so he should be able to articulate his ideas easily.
Cant prove you take things to heart but that's just my observation, moving on.
It's funny you bring up proof when multiple times in different threads people have asked for proof to your claims and you ignore it. Otherwise you dismiss peoples arguments, criticisms and concerns with blanket statements like "that's a common thing in any industry".
Your first response did contain links about crew stations but the only one that mattered was the dev post about crew stations. It had no bearing on the conversation that Chris Roberts sounds like he makes shit up as he goes along though since you didn't post any links that show Chris talking confidently. So allow me to amend my useless info to mostly useless info.
Again I'll say it that yes you posted links but nothing that address the point about Chris. You posted a Reddit thread, a short video, forum posts with a CIG employee and the dev article. The dev article would have been sufficient because if someone didn't want to take the time to read it then they probably don't care enough about the project to begin with.
Glad you can live with the shame of looking foolish to me.
As far as @rpmcmurphy goes, what is adequate? The average CEO on the Standard & Poor 500 makes over $13 million per year. So would $1 million a year be a bargain? I guess it's always possible he hasn't taken a dime in salary, too, which happens with plenty of start-up companies.
Jesus man, why so serious? It's a tongue-in-cheek comment aimed at all the people that bang on about CIG's finances as much as it is about adequate compensation for Roberts' chosen role.
Something more important than a single question out of 810 questions in 81 episodes of a videoblog.
Something like: * Management of 300+ employees * Management of 4 studios in 3 countries * Financial management of 111 M$ in crowdfunding resources * Overall creative direction of a AAA level space game * Spokesperson to authorities and the government * Spokesperson to the international press * Having children and a wife and trying to be a good father and husband * Trying to satisfy the expectations of 1.4 million-ish fans * etc.
Have fun
This bears quoting again because of the absurd claims made. As rodarin pointed out that if someone wants to get something done they delegate.
The employees, studios, authorities/government and financials should all be managed by the managers, lawyer(s) and accountants. If you as CEO are trying to do all that then it would be a wonder if you ever sleep and why you haven't keeled over yet from the stress. . You've said it yourself multiple times that he can't please all the fans and he will disappoint many of them so don't throw that in there like its a selling point when you have said otherwise.
Only part I will agree with you is overall creative direction of the game and being a good husband and father.

I said that these are more important things that IMHO could go through his mind while he is answering another question in one of many video blogs.
I did NOT say that he does all this personally, especially not nowadays.
I even linked the "Jobs" part of the official homepage to show that they obviously ARE hiring all kinds of people for all kinds of tasks. Hinting at the fact that not everything is done by CR personally ;-)
And watching CR in the V-blogs over the years ... there HAVE been times when he was obviously not sleeping enough and it showed.

Jesus man, why so logical ? How can you bring some reason into these discussions ?! How dare you present some verifably facts ?!?!1!
Have fun
What logic? The comment wasn't even pertinent to the bloody discussion. You guys and the way you hold hands....
Your response was that you believed he made an adequate amount for his responsibilities. So I asked you what was adequate? Is $13 million a year adequate, because that's what the Standard & Poor 500 average CEO makes. So is that the yard stick? I, actually, directly referenced your comment, so maybe you were off topic? I'm not sure.
As far as holding hands, I always try to hold hands when I'm wading in the shallow end of the gene pool

I still think it is rather stupid to compare a crowdfunded game to a real company that has to follow the law. It also amazes me how if one of us use that argument you guys jump all over us. Like I said you guys want different rules for you and us. :-D
Roberts was a producer on the same IP for 5 or 6 years, then there was a 5 year gap (where he apparently did nothing) and he did something around 2001, then he had an idea in 2003, then another 10+ year gap when he announced this game which he was going to have total control over.
Its like some guy working at some place during high school and college. Graduating and 'finding' himself, then after a decade mooching off his parents he suddenly decides to start his own business (with other peopls money of course)
Everyone loves to state all his qualifications but most of them involve a single IP and only last 5 or 6 years, he has been 'unemployed' more since he started that game 20 years ago than he has been 'employed'.
If he were interviewing for a REAL job the interviewer would obviously have questions about the gap in work history.
Even with the most generous calculations the last time he had any input into anything video game related was as "freelance conceptual designer'' (which could have been as simple as putting something down on a napkin at a Dennys somewhere) of Freelancer that was 10 years before SC was mentioned.

I agree and disagree. I don't think it's a product of one side or another, I think it's a matter of people will use any argument to suit their agenda. However, throwing out blatant bait topics gets blatant responses asking for context. I mean how much does CR make and is that adequate or acceptable? What's it being compared against? In my opinion, he should take little, or less, because it's crowd funded, but how much less? I mean Brad McQuaid basically got lamb-basted for paying himself once. I don't think it's a matter of different rules, but an absence of rules where two sides are arguing that the rules are clear and their side is right.

I don't disagree with you there. I do significant amounts of hiring and if it was some Joe-blow off the street, I would file him under G immediately based on the gaps. However, and keeping in mind this is over the top, if Bill Gates took 10 years off and then came and applied for a job with my company, I'm pretty sure I'd hire him.
I do love this "simple fact" information, though. Thank you. The reality is that it's neither simple, nor factual. You're taking some liberties with your factual information. While it has been a long time since he worked on a game, he's not the Executive Producer, for one, and the work he HAS been involved with over those gaps would compliment someone in his position. Again, can't say he came away better or worse for it, but he made enough money to work, essentially, half his life and then spend the other half doing what he's passionate about. Whether that was done well or poorly is subjective, but it's no wonder people are envious. I wish I could quit today and afford to do what I'm passionate about.
As far as working on the same IP for a great deal of his career. Yeah....... I'm sure he's using tissues made of $100 bills while he wipes away the tears because he created a video game franchise. Him and the guys that created WoW, CoD, and Super Mario Brothers all get together to support each other for being so unsuccessful.......... I mean seriously? It's actually a pretty weak argument. Now, not saying that he wasn't a one-trick pony, because after Wing Commander, it's been pretty much one-and-done series', but I really don't see as creating *bold statement* the largest, longest-running, most profitable Space Flight Sim in history is the failure that people tend to make it out to be.

I love how you continue to make the most insane comparisons to support your side of the argument. Bill Gates was a key person in the development of the base code that most computers used for decades (DOS) and built one of the largest companies in the world. Chris Roberts (with help) created a video game series while working for other companies in the 90's and since then he has created 2 failed companies (Digital Anvil and Ascendant Pictures). I dont see the comparison.
I dont have an issue with your actual argument but you continuously bring in the most ludicrous comparisons to support them.

If Gates came to you for a job he clearly would not be the same Gates we all know.
Sorry I had too. :-D
Yet it does show the difference in thinking between us. Reality vs Dr. Who!

You're right, I do make insane comparisons, but it's no less insane than suggesting that CR being employed and responsible for a decade-old game series is somehow a failure. As far as failure goes, Digital Anvil was bought out, and Ascendant Pictures, well, made movies. Those movies were just warmly received by critics, but seemingly well-received by the audience (the two biggest averaged an 85% on rotten tomatoes). However, with worldwide box office numbers for those two movies grossing over $120 million, and the budget on the production budgets being shy of $90 million, I'm not sure why that would be considered a failure. It's no Avengers, but there are plenty of indie film companies who would take that sort of money.
I don't usually do that, but it was too damn funny to pass up.
I can't blame you, if someone had me believing that they actually believed the bars on avatars meant the person was literally in jail, I'd probably be pretty pissed too.

Yea to compare chris roberts to the wealthiest person on the planet is like comparing a tadpole to a whale.
So lets get this ship in space. The trailers for SQ42 say 2016, well it's 2016. Lets go already. :-)

You said that he had more important things to think about like managing 300+ employees etc etc.
He shouldn't be thinking about managing 300+ employees or any of the other things I said about the business unless he is a control freak. You hire your managers/accountants/lawyers and you trust them to do their job so you can do yours.
Of of course from what's been said about Chris it does sound like he is a control freak.
Hey, that's the long version cable commercial with the quote, "oedibytes of data". No one ever told me what's an "oedibytes of data" or how one moves it.
