Guild Wars 1 spiritual successor

With Guild Wars 2 being an entirely different game and Guild Wars 1 is not being updated, there is a lot of Guild Wars 1 fans that would love a  game similar in mechanics and ideas.

Though it seemed like Everquest next could have filled that hole, i doubt it now.

And I do know about Warframe, but it doesn't hit that sweet spot as well.

So If there is any developer  that wants to make a spiritual successor, there are a lot of Guild Wars 1  fans that will be will be happy to play such an mmo.

I hope a dev reads the posts.

Spiritual Successor : a game similar in mechanics and ideas, not in looks or names.

Input needed on what makes/made GW great to play.

Can you make both answers on the poll checkable,so that people can check mark both?

You can make a poll with four options, so that you have all four combinations of "checked" and "unchecked" boxes.

Um, guild wars 2 is hardly vertical. Compare it to pretty much every other mmo on the market, its not even remotely close. Next to guild wars 1 thats really your best option.

I would like to see some more horizontal (items at endgame specifically) progression in mmos, but not like guildwars (I want items with different uses and values, not just all items with the same stats but they just look different), but thats just me.

I think your taking thing a little too serially. This post isn't about Guild Wars 2,but about a Guild Wars 1 spiritual successor.

What makes me sad is that many people can't get over the part that not everyone like the same things as them. Also i am still hoping that a dev  saw this post and is thinking about making a horizontal progression mmo.

I played GW for 5 years but I always kinda missed jumping. The reason ANET made the game like that from the beginning was really econimical reasons.

Then again, if you are a dev with limited resources GW is an excellent example how you make a great game cheap. And it is one of the online games that got in most money compared to what the game cost making ever.

But I would not play a game because it have no jumping, it is more that I can play a game even if it lacks it if it is a good and fun game.

I'm sure you're going to find some personal definition of horizontal progression which will make it so that GW2 is not included. People do this all the time on this forum ;-)

    yeah right .

Gw2 is nothing like gw1 and i fail to see how gw2 has horizontal progression. You level up, hit max level, get max stat items, the end. Just like in every other mmo. Only difference is that there is no raiding at max level and you quickly get the best stat items.

GW1 had about 1500 skills I could unlock on my character and the entire game was scaled for max level. It was the definition of true horizontal progression. Something which GW2 is not.

GW1 is a brilliant horizontal progression game, but that does not mean GW2 does not have horizontal progression (its not as good as GW1)  The progression in GW2 is currency based, where XP is obviously one of those currencies, along with tokens, skins, PVP stats etc etc.  Again, not liking a game does not invalidate the systems it uses.

Yeah, but people need to point out that you're wrong about GW2.

If you're trying to compare a successor, it's important to get the comparison correct.

GW2 isn't vertical progression, unless you're basing it on leveling, which GW1 also had.

It's also not vertical in gear, although they did add Ascended gear after launch, but they haven't added any ever since.  GW1 also has tiered gear.

here's the big deal.A lot of people think that Guild Wars 2 is boring ,but love Guild Wars 1.And being that many don't care about Guild Wars 2,hardly play the mmo. They want a Guild Wars 1 Spiritual Successor,a game similar in mechanics and ideas. Not like Guild Wars 2 that is vaguely similar in looks and names. So many don't want play Guild Wars 2 nor care about Guild Wars 2 and rather go a different mmo.

GW1 was very different and all my GW1 friends didn't like GW2 at all. I did enjoy it for a bit but probably because I have played other MMOs and it was more comparable to those. All my GW1 friends don't play MMOs at all and they loved GW1 but didn't like GW2 one bit. Main complaint was not horizontal progression though. It was that it took to long to hit max level and that the game was piss easy so they all got bored halfway through levelling.

some times its about burying the hatchet and saying good bye to the old enemies and friends. This was not about Guild Wars 2,but the love for Guild Wars 1 and how much people would love a similar mmo.

I was very young when I started with GW, sadly. What I loved with that game was the challenge it offered by creating all kind of builds, trying out, optimizing. I played WoW for many years, but IMHO, I do believe GW is the best online game I've ever played. I loved that style.

Its not the best for me either,i am still waiting for that mmo,but still Guild Wars 1 is an excellent and unique mmo.And its not about being the best, its about being enjoyable, but still it is nice from to write about what you liked in Guild Wars 1.

To me, the closest thing to GW1 is The Secret World, but I tried it and its just not my cup of tea. I played GW2 for a while just clinging to the hope that it might eventually become more like  GW1, but that hope has been long since tarnished. Im currently playing FFXIV, I didnt like it at first because of the combat, but I gave it some time and I must say its pretty amazing. Its the most rewarding I've felt since GW1 and the world is beautiful and immersive. For someone who likes GW1, I recommend giving this a try at least until level 20 because you can access every class on one character and you have subclasses and cross classes that provide a lot of variety and choice in how you play. FFXIV gives me the feeling of the work I put into the game being meaningful. Now as for the topic at hand, a GW1 spiritual successor would be amazinggg, favorite mmo of all time and would love to see it resurrected (as long as they leave ressurection out of their build when making the game)...(unlike gw2)

My hope is that gw2 will become more gw1 like over time, perhaps even a hard mode mega server, where you can gather more elite flavour skills (finishers for example would be awesome). The true successor to gw1 would however allow you to control a party of npc's.
