Regardless of what this site suggests will happen or not, i think that Wildstar was the last true attempt of a major company to literally create a WoW 2. I really hope that these companies have learned their lesson by now and will try to stir away from that trend in the future.

    Could spell trouble for Wildstar.

Same happened to ESO before it gone to b2p.

As much as I would prefer it to go B2P (since I've bought a copy), I just don't see anyone buying it, because of unknown IP.

ESO could afford to go B2P, but Wildstar? I don't think so.

And still, even with F2P transition, NCsoft would have to invest a lot in advertising (as well as business model change) to get players on board.

I think neither B2P or F2P is coming to Wildstar. On the contrary, I think NCsoft might be pulling the plug.

    I would tend to agree.

There are too many people that simply did not like Wildstar's core game play. The whole "Loony Tunes" design was a gamble, and it failed. Carbine should be commended for trying something different, the great pity is that it didn't work out.

Ofc not. For me though is a very welcome and much awaited change, if this is true ofc :)

I've been having a lot of fun playing the last couple of days with my free 10-day trial. I'm only level 9, so I don't know what's down the road, but so far the game seems like it has a lot of good points and it's just fun to play -- for me anyway. I still haven't done any group content.

I think going b2p could possibly be a good move. It all depends on the cash shop implementation, as usual.

I would be sad if the game gets closed down, though I don't think that's likely. In the very worst case scenario, a game like this will get milked via f2p first. I really hope that doesn't happen either. If they go in an ESO-GW2-Rift type of direction with their monetization, it would be okay. But time will tell how ESO does with their CS.

Anyway, as others have already said, not surprising.

Seems I guessed the ESO - WS order correctly, with FF still stays on the sub path.

And FFXIV will STILL stay on the sub path. There's a huge difference between FF and those games. It's a Japanese game and over there it has a HUGE market supporting it. Consider the fact that FFXI, which was released back in 2002, is still sub-based too and i don't think FFXIV will ditch their own sub anytime soon.

They dont count on lot of people buying it, since most of those who intended buying it already did.

What they would count on if going B2P/F2P:

    1. getting part of masses that dont play but own the game

    2. getting more money from those who do play/month

Getting more money is either having more people playing/paying or go FFXIV route and just count on those playing paying more/month through cash shop on top of sub.

But yeah, thers also real chance of NCSoft just pulling the plug.

And ESO is different story, they still have cosole release, ES is not as big on consoles as on PC, but still, quite a bit of (full price) sales even if retention is small.

Not many people bought the game in the first place. Relying on that low number of players to come back and revive your business would be grasping at straws IMHO.

And people who are already p(l)aying, history has shown that they do not prefer cash shop business model so the conversion would probably alienate part of the (already low) subscription player base.

I don't know. If I was NCsoft executive, I would cut my losses and pull the plug. Everything else seems like throwing money down the drain to me.

Well, from pre launch WS, it seems they already have F2P infrastructure in place, so change might not be so costly as, for instance, SWTORs, so might be worth a shot.

Of course, it all comes down to number crunchers, NCSoft is not SOE that drags fail games around for years, losing money in the process.

Well, I jumped off the SOE boat back in 2005, but from what I heard/read was that they were making more money with dying MMO's through feeding addiction with selling card deck games/items.

At least that was what they have done with SWG.

Can't say for MXO, Vanguard, POTBS etc.

Converting a game to a F2P model costs is a significant investment as it takes a lot of dev time (especially on the platform side).

If NCSoft is unwilling to invest more into WS they very well could just cut their losses - but IMO it's far too soon. I think they'll give it a fair go at F2P before choosing the sunset option.

I was hoping they would give the same amount of respect to Tabula Rasa, one of the better MMOs of its time, but nah they just closed doors. When my boyfriend and I tried to make a private server NCSoft hit us with a DMCA.

Would be awesome if the game switches to B2P with cash shop though. F2P really brings bad players. B2P with regular discounts keeps sales up and tend to have better communities. Guild Wars 2 has an amazing community, even though some of you call it F2P. You honestly can't compare that to the rest of F2P trash.

Even better, another P2P bites the dust. Only 3 would remain. And one of them is basically in maintenance mode :) (e.g. milking mode) and the 3rd one can basically be played as F2P if you invest enough time.

I just started playing again yesterday , now I'm wondering if I should invest any time on the game if it is going to be put down.

i went back in for the ten day trial and i have to admit i forgot how much i liked the game. enough to sub ...not at fifgteen dollars. but i will say this, the lag i had experienced is gone.  and my slight hatred for the combat is gone too. the immersive housing i forgot how much i needed it. if they dropped a sub to 10$ or went buy to play with a cash shop i would be thrilled. it IS a good game, the people who argue otherwise arent mmo players

    so say we all

Seem like wildstar going push it this year with content and try to turn it around, but not to sure if it's going work out, as NCsoft going push gw2 box over trying bring in wildstar back to the light. Going be up to you on that part, never know.

I'm expecting F2P, personally. As opposed to B2P, with an optional sub.

Thanks for the tip, OP. We'll be posting this as news shortly.

np Bill. Any explanation why you are expecting F2P instead of B2P? It has anything to do with GW2?

I'm having fun, too. I have 8 more days on my free trial and I'm seriously considering a sub. The game seems a lot more fun than when I played it last time, for sure. Maybe there was just too much going on for me when this game launched with other games, etc. I found it kind of overwhelming and I didn't know what to do. This time, I'm just taking it in and having fun.

I don't know. I was just running around Thayd, the capital city for Exile and I didn't see anyone there. But I'm playing during Oceanic prime time, so I guess it's the quietest time for the NA server.

I hope f2p isn't a disaster. I just don't like f2p with the constant cash shop reminders interfering in what I want to be a virtual world. Oh well. Times are changing.

I too realised how much fun this game is and now that I have been playing ESO my earlier problems with shoulder pain and elbow ache hopefully will be diminished since I am not gripping the mouse so tight nor am I using the mouse turn so much but yesterday I still died to a group +2 mob (bounty) that was a level below me. It was almost dead though. I know I should not be proud of almost killing it but  considering the fact that I am not a very good player and quite slow with my reflexes on my esper I did okay I think.

I really love the housing in this game that is the one thing I truly missed in ESO and one of the reasons I decided to come back to Wildstar.

Well I guess they will not immediately pull the plug right so may be I can still have a few months of fun from the game which is more than I can say for some other games I have played. So I have decided to do the housing and just enjoy it before it is gone for good.image

Hopefully Bill you're right . image

Start seeing f2p when see more casual content being add in,  Keeping the way now, if they went f2p now then ends up being a mess people leaving with endgame is raiding not much to do outside of that. There a very few % people out there that raid in the mmo world, what they have now is the few people that like the raiding.

Well Thayd was not empty there were quite a few people of course nothing like it was during launch but not a ghost town on the Euro server Jabbit I think the server is called and people all answered my questions and boy did I have many questions image

Quite nice actually no snide remarks and even the jokes were well done when it was made. I think the community values returnees.
